No Cooking Necessary Options for 4th of July

Stop playing nose goes with your friends when trying to decide who’s going to host the cookout this Fourth of July. Instead, here are a couple of places that can supply the food platters so you can enjoy the party. So pick up some good eats, kick back, crack open a cold beer and toast to the birthday of the United States of America.

Red Apron Butchery – Fourth of July Packs
Feed the whole family with Red Apron’s swine-tastic pack. For $50 ($52 if you opt for the bacon bangers sausages), you get a rack of spice-rubbed baby back ribs, a pound of sandwich-ready smoked brisket, 1 package of five all pork hot dogs, four fresh sausages (choice of bratwurst, Italian or bacon bangers) and a pint of house-made Coca-Cola BBQ sauce. And it’s all nicely tucked into an insulated Red Apron bag, so you can just show up on a friend’s door step ready to commandeer their grill. Place your order online and pick it up at the DuPont Farmer’s Market on Sunday, July 1 from 10 AM to 1 PM.

Pick a pic-a-nic basket, boo boo. The first option, the sandwich basket, has options such as sopressata with roasted peppers and tapenade on house-made focaccia or smoked ham with Nancy’s camembert and pickled onions. Or go with the second option, the chicken basket which has either a Peruvian grilled chicken or the garlic-herb marinated fried chicken. Both baskets come with side salads; either a farro salad with wild mushrooms, spring onions, preserved lemons or a Mediterranean cous cous salad and Italian sweet wines. Third Annual DC Meat Week Starts January 29th

Dry rubbed, smoked, pulled, braised and brined–no matter how you like your barbecued meat, there’s something for every meat-eating, ‘cue lover at DC’s third annual meat week. For eight nights, you can head to different restaurants around the city (and close by in Virginia) and try all sorts of slow-cooked dishes ranging from dry-rubbed Texas brisket to vinegar-based Carolina pulled pork or saucy Memphis or Kansas City ribs.

In 2005, Meat Week began in Tallahassee, FL and arrived in DC in 2009 after food blogger, Mike Bober of Capital Spice started the Washington Chapter. This year is the first that the event has expanded to eight nights.

DC Meat Week starts Sunday, January 29th and runs until Sunday, February 5th. All of the events are open to the public and most are set up as “pay as you order.” You can find the full schedule after the jump.

Opening Soon: 5 Restaurants I’m Anxiously Awaiting

Ok, so if you’re the least bit familiar with restaurants and the supposed opening dates in DC, you know that they are almost never met due to permitting delays, construction delays, staffing delays…you get it. Still, the eternal optimist, these are the five restaurants I can’t wait to try when they open later this year. (Note: I better not have to wait until 2012 to see you!)

1) Elisir:

The fine dining, Italian restaurant brought to us by Enzo Fargione will join the culinary heaven that is Penn Quarter. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Chef Fargione was previously the chef at K Street’s Teatro Goldoni. Publicist Janet Donovan tells me that the restaurant will open sometime in the Fall — so I’m crossing my fingers for late September/early October. Elisir’s Facebook page is getting more and more active, which is always a good sign. You can check it out for construction and menu updates.

Prince of Petworth has some good food news for us. If signs speak the truth, King of Kabob is taking over the old Bao Restaurant & Lounge at 1018 Vermont Ave. Also, if you love your seafood and need something more than a truck, PoP hears that Luke’s Lobster Shack is coming to Penn Quarter at 622 E St, NW. Luke’s currently has 4 locations in New York City. With seafood rolls and brisket (Hill Country) now available in PQ, I might have to move there.

The name reminds me a little too much of those books we all read in elementary school, but this is good news anyway! The Hill is Home updates us on BoxCar Grill (just a working name for now), which will be Xavier Cervera’s fifth (sixth if you count Pacifico) establishment on the Hill. The Hill is Home says BoxCar will be an upsale place with an in-house charcuterie, cheeses, and a large wine selection.

First Look: Hill Country

As a DC native who spent one lovely year living in Wichita Falls, Texas, let me tell you that if I’m ever missing the Lone Star State, DC’s new Hill Country Barbecue will easily take me right back to Texas.

My caveat: I am super snotty and like going to a restaurant where the food comes to me — I’m not all about the cafeteria-style (hello again DCPS) lunch line…but I LOVE this place.
