Once again Awards Season is in full effect and for Oscar Watchers like me, there’s an extra week to catch-up on films this year thanks to the Winter Olympics. So if you are up to the challenge of watching all nine Best Picture nominees, or perhaps you are like me and will try to watch all 58 nominated films, here are some tips on taking on the challenge and here is an updated breakdown on where you can find this year’s Academy Awards nominees in The District before the March 2nd ceremony.

Your Cheat Sheet To The 85th Academy Awards
It may not be the Super Bowl, DC’s Super Bowl (Election Night or State of the Union), or even Nerd Prom but this weekend will be a big weekend for Hollywood and I’m sure a lot of you will be tuning into Sunday’s Academy Awards. Washington old and new is well represented within this year’s nominees: Argo, Lincoln, and Zero Dark Thirty make up the leading contenders for Best Picture.
I’ve prepared myself by watching as many Oscar nominated films as I could and after devouring 50 out of the 53 nominated films I’m ready to tell you who to pick in your Oscar pool as well as where to watch in DC if you want to get dressed up (or not).
Oscar Watch: Where To Watch Every Academy Award Nominee In D.C.
If you are like me, you are already caught up in the frenzy of Oscar. You’ve been studying the field of nominees since Academy Awards nominees were read off by Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone last week. You watched the Golden Globes and rooted for Oscar-snubbed Ben Affleck and tried to make sense of Jodie Foster’s speech.
You also viewed the long Holiday/Inaugural weekend as a time to make some progress on Oscar watching. So if you are like me, you are probably planning out where you can watch all the nominees. Last year I wrote some tips to make the most of your Oscar Watching experience. Here is a breakdown of where you can locally find this year’s nominees.

Tonight little gold men will be handed out to Hollywood’s best and brightest while Billy Crystal hams it up with mildly funny jokes.
It’s Oscar Night in America and once again I am here with my picks along with some thoughts from the We Love DC crew and others who shared the same annual tradition as I: to watch as many Oscar nominated films before the Academy Awards as possible.

I have been waiting for this weekend for awhile now.
I’ve been watching a lot of films. Like I said when I first started this thing, I try and watch every Oscar nominated film out there.
That’s a lot of films.
As of this morning I have watched 42 out of the 56 (80%) nominated films. Through those 42 films I have watched 105 of the 120 (87%) total nominees. Before Sunday I’ll probably be able to squeeze 2-3 more films in.
So now it’s time to offer all of my thoughts on this year’s races. I also polled the We Love DC staff to give you a complete picture of who we think will win this year’s Academy Awards.
Supporting Actress
Patrick – Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit): Her presence in True Grit is just dominating. However there are two dark horse scenarios that could spoil it:
1. Overwhelming enthusiasm for The King’s Speech elevates Helena Bonham Carter to the top.
2. Melissa Leo overcomes her campaigning snafus and is recognized for a solid resume of character work.
Tom – Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit): I was astounded by Steinfeld’s performance. To rest a whole movie on a virtual unknown, and to have that unknown just own the performance like she did in True Grit? It was astounding.
Rebecca J – Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit): Academy loves giving the lil golden fella to young-uns.
Jenn – Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech): She nails the Queen Mum. In a good way.
Oscar Watch: Talking Oscars With West End Cinema (Part II)

In my earlier post we met West End Cinema General Manager Josh Levin, who told us about West End’s latest venue for Arthouse/Indie film and shared his thoughts on DC’s obsession with Oscar.
Tonight we’ll take a look at his picks in some of the big Academy Award races.

Near the corner of 23rd & M St. in DC’s West End is a new movie theatre that has a true personal touch. You cannot enter or leave the West End Cinema without a personal greeting/goodbye from the theatre’s General Manager Josh Levin. Despite the lofty title, Levin and his business partner Jamie Shor are very visible in the day-to-day operations. When I visited the cinema this past weekend Levin was busy typing away on a Macbook in the front lobby. From his makeshift “office” he can answer e-mails while also serving concessions and talk with patrons on what they thought of the films they saw.
Levin and Shor are no strangers to the film industry, Levin is a local bar owner and works in the film distribution scene while Levin is the President of PR Collaborative, a local film PR/Marketing firm. They opened up West End Cinema four months ago because they wanted to see more screens in the city for Independent/Arthouse film.

I love this time of year.
Awards season.
I rolled out of bed this past Tuesday to watch the nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards and after Monique finished reading off the names, the clocked started.
As of right now I have a little over 31 days and counting to watch 56 films. All 56 films nominated for an Academy Award this year.
It’s something I’ve been doing for a few years now, and it’s a challenge I’ve yet to fully complete. Last year I managed to watch 46 out of the 58 Oscar nominated films.
This year I’m ready to give it another go, and last week I thought I’d visit some film geeks that would share the same excitement. I dropped in on a meeting of the DC Film Society’s Cinema Lounge discussion group. The group meets on a monthly basis to talk about various topics in film. The topic of that night: Oscar Prognostication. I listened and quipped in some thoughts as the small group argued over potential nominees and attempted to predict who would get a nod from the Academy.
