DC Meat Free Week

First, there was meat week. And after I announced it, former WLDC author Jasmine astutely pointed out that every week is meat week, really. Which is a point I totally agree on – it is absolutely easier to eat meat in this city than it is NOT to eat meat. Enter: DC Meat Free Week. DC Vegan has put together a delicious sounding week of vegan menus, starting February 6 and running through the 12th and I have to say, it looks mighty tasty.

With some of my favorite restaurants like The Source and Restaurant Nora, on the list of participating places, this isn’t something to scoff at. DC Vegan also reports, “Two of the restaurants are debuting new vegan menus, and one is offering discounted rates off their regular prices. Gene Baur, Farm Sanctuary President and Co-founder, will be attending dinner one night. And two of the events are fundraisers, including one with all profits donated to Haitian relief.”

I’m sold – eating ethically is important. I can’t wait to see some of of our cities finest restaurants step up to the challenge.

We Love Leftovers

The turkey is still brining, the potatoes aren’t even peeled and the pies are still cooling, and I’m already thinking about what to do with the leftovers.  Of course, there’s the traditional turkey fixings sandwich, which requires putting every item from the meal between two slices of bread and then prying your mouth open like a boa constrictor and jamming it in there. And however much I love me a leftover sammie, there’s only so much our palates can tolerate, so it’s high time we look into other creative options for the food exploding out of the fridge.

Let’s start with potatoes. These tubers are perhaps the most versatile leftover you have at your disposal. If you’re left with boiled or roasted potatoes, they make the perfect based for Alton Brown’s breakfast hash, or some potatoes au-gratin or the crispy topping of a pot pie.  If you have some whole potatoes left over of the yam variety, then I suggest using them in this simple sweet potato casserole. And should you have an ample portion of mashed potatoes, add some bacon, onions, chives, or if you like seafood some cooked white fish, and mold them into 3″ potato cakes. Pan fry the cakes until they have a golden, crispy exterior on both sides, and garnish with sour cream, applesauce or whatever accompaniment your palate desires. Continue reading

Is it just me, or is today quite possibly the worst Friday in recent months? Between the significance of the day, some massive MASSIVE “exercise training” fails, and general crankiness, I’m just not feeling it. But you know what makes me feel better? Food. So without much other pomp and circumstance, here’s all the news fit to eat in the District this week. Continue reading

The DC Food Scene: Blogger Happy Hour

Last night at Poste Brasserie, I stepped out onto the DC foodie scene, mingling with as many of the 60 local food and gardening bloggers as I possibly could. WeLoveDC’s resident foodie, Katie, couldn’t make the party, and she sent me in her stead (poor me…).

Thanks to Mary (Arugula Files) and Amelia (Gradually Greener) who planned the evening, WeLoveDC was present at an incredibly successful gathering.

Nestled into a private corner of the outdoor patio, the weather was impeccably gorgeous, the wine was flowing freely, Continue reading

It’s a full out taco-fest today in DC as the Taco Bell Truck swings through our fair city, making a stop in Foggy Bottom for lunch, and another in Rosslyn for a late afternoon snack.

Today from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. the TBT will be parked outside George Washington University Student Center handing out free tacos.  After that, the TBT will head to Rosslyn near N Moore & 19th st. for a Taco Drop Off around 4:30, but make sure you’re there right at 4:30 as the truck can’t stay much longer in the area than it takes to make the tacos and hand them out.

Kicking off it’s second week of the East Coast tour, the Taco Bell Truck serves up Volcano & Crunchy tacos to the DC area (1 per person).  After DC, its off to NY, Boston, and Philadelphia.

Chicken Bones

Below is a suggested story that we received from a concerned reader calling herself “chickenbone.”

What do you think we should know about?
Who or what?
the vast amounts of chicken bones in certain areas of DC. It seems like people just throw them out the window. These are extremely hazardous to my dogs and others. its like eatting nails.
What makes it interesting? i swear sometimes i walk down the alley and there are like mounds of chicken bones. what is the deal? through them in the garbage. ”

Sic, Sic, Sic, etc.

So there you have it: chicken bones kill, through them in the garbage. Seriously.

Foodie Round-Up (July 13-17th)

Ms. Katie’s headin’ home early for the weekend and so it is my pleasure to make a meeger attempt at filling those big ol’ shoes of hers by pullin’ together a Foodie Roundup for all you (y’all, in Katie’s words) voracious eaters out there. You ready for this?

Just when I thought I was getting over the trauma, er…I mean adventure?, of my tactile dining experience Katie tells me the folks over at banished productions announced that due to popular demand (a fact I highly doubt) they will be serving up two extra shows of A Tactile Dinner on Monday, July 20, 2009 at 7pm and 9pm at the Arthur S. Flemming Center (1426 9th St NW) in Shaw. Reference the review I wrote about my experience before deciding whether or not you’d like to attend.

The owners of popular Cork Wine Bar cordially invite you to  join them for an afternoon wine tasting on Sunday, July 19, 2009.  They’re gonna be learning about wines from the Jura Region in France with local distributor pals of at Potomac Selections.  Known as France’s smallest wine region, the Jura offers an amazing diversity of wines and wine styles.  You’ll taste delicious wines and learn about the Jura region, its varietals and winemaking.  The tasting starts at 3:00 p.m., costs $30, and is limited attendance to ensure the comfort of guests (awww, how nice!)

Next up, the folks of Asia Nine are throwing a “Full Moon Party” for a good cause. Here’s the skinny: Continue reading

We’ve got the Washingtonian Best Of Washington Party, Galileo III, a Mondavi wine dinner, where to celebrate Bastille Day, and um, Asian picnics on 4th of July (what?). Read on, dear readers. Hi Kids! It’s actually sunny out there today! Whee! What a dismal week we’ve had. But that’s okay, brushing it off, let’s talk food for a while.
