Sports Fix: A Rough Weekend

The end of the Redskins game yesterday was abysmal. Check that. The whole game yesterday was abysmal, but the end defies description. The hapless 0-4 Rams came to Washington and ended up the 1-4 Rams. That’s right, the Redskins couldn’t even beat one of the worst teams in the NFL (sorry Chris) and embarrassed themselves at Fedex in front of 90,000. And they ousted me from my suicide pool, as well. So, I’ll be carrying a grudge.

The turnovers and special teams were big gaping holes in the effectiveness of the Redskins offense. 3 fumbles, abysmal punt and kick returns, and a secondary that gave up the big play with under two minutes to go. The big play in question was a 43-yard pass on 3rd and 13, and that setup the field-goal-as-time-ran-out cliché that was dominate in the NFL this week.

26-24. Sorry, Cowboys, no 4 & 0 for you. The Redskins looked quite good in Dallas today, with Jason Campbell starting to look like the Quarterback that the Redskins had hoped he’d become. Two TDs and 230 yards, all without a single pick. Clinton Portis came up big with 121 yards over 21 carries. It was the kind of victory that kept the TV on and the fans cheering right down to the last play. Fortunately, Shaun Suisham’s leg was up to the task, with four Field Goals and a pair of extra points.

Great day for Jim Zorn, and for the Skins as a whole, with the last Redskins Regular Season Game in Texas Stadium coming up a big victory for us. But that’s not all the sporting news…

That’s right, it’s time for the Redskins, as they have several times over the last few years, to frustrate the Cowboys in new and unusual ways. As Skins’ Blogger Jamie Mottram wrote,

DC Rollergirls Take On Charm City All-Stars

Since it looks like rain tomorrow, you might want to eschew the various outdoor Oktoberfests and head instead to Sterling to check out the DC Rollergirls as they take on the Charm City All-stars in a pre-season match. DC-based matches at the DC Armory start up on the 4th of October.

Last night’s game at Nationals Park was rained out, saving the Nationals Fans from having to see the Nats’ 100th loss in person. That honor will fall to the Philadelphia Fans, most likely. Could I think of a better group of hooligans to punish the Nats like they deserve?

Nation’s Triathlon by Noah Devereaux

Last week our fine city hosted the annual Nation’s Triathlon where competitors are challenged to swim 1.5K through the murky Potomac, bike 40K, and run 10K.  It’s a feat so easy that even our very own Mayor Fenty can do it.  I’m kidding of course.  The only way I could compete in this race is if it were a 51.5K bike ride.

This amazing shot by Noah Devereaux takes the sweaty, strenuous, and sometimes painful event and strips away the grit, replacing it with grace and beauty.  The perfect lane lines and tree-lined street capture your eye and lead it toward the majestic Capitol at the end of Pennsylvania Avenue.  The warm morning sun glimmers off the newly paved road and creates a shadow for the runner to compete against.  It takes months of dedicated preparation to compete in a race like this, but this photo makes it look like a mere jog through the park.

Deadbeat Lerners Still Haven’t Paid the Rent

Okay. See. If you or I did this? We’d be on the street a long time ago. But we’re now six months after the start of the baseball season at brand new Nationals Park, and the Lerner Family still hasn’t paid the team’s rent.

Folks, this is ri-goddamned-diculous.

They owe the city $3.5M for the occupation of the ballpark and they haven’t paid a red cent anywhere. They haven’t even done the courteous thing and put the rent in escrow, near as I can find. Chance are, it’s over something monumentally stupid like Ted Lerner’s chair rocking ever so slightly in his multi-million dollar owner’s suite.

Pay up, Ted. Pay up. You owe this city its due.

On Chris Cooley’s Wang

By now, I’m certain, all of DC has seen Chris Cooley’s wang (SFW) as he was foolish enough to put it on his own blog on Saturday. By Sunday, everyone was chuckling at Cooley’s silliness. However, the best part of all this is the response from Cooley, in a post entitled “We’re Dumb”:

“All apologies from the website. We are very sorry that we showed a penis on our website all day yesterday. That was by no means our intention and we did not want to offend anyone. The picture wouldn’t have been up for so long, but we were in the middle of winning a big game. Once again, this was a complete accident and we regret not reviewing the post more closely. Thanks.”

Sorry about the penis. But we won! Go team!

Sports Fix: Redskins 1-1, United in Contention, Nationals Vying for Last.

1-1! The Redskins played from behind most of Sunday’s game against the Saints, but came up big in the fourth quarter. A 67-yard TD to Santana Moss, despite a major defensive lapse, provided the winning score for the Skins. Jason Campbell finally looked like the prospect we’ve been told he is, with 321 yards and that perfect TD to Santana Moss.

DC Adds EagleBank Bowl

DC will have the honor of the first College Football Bowl Game of the year on December 20th, with the EagleBank Bowl at RFK Stadium. This year’s game will feature the Navy Midshipmen against the #9 team from the ACC, provided that both teams come up with six wins this season.

EagleBank has signed a four-year sponsorship deal for the new Bowl Game targeted at the military service academies, with parts of the proceeds from each year’s game going to charities that support Veterans. Tickets will run from $45 to $135 a game, or, mostly cheaper than a ticket to the Nationals.

Sports Fix: United goes for First, Nats for Last, Redskins Home Opener Thursday

Tomorrow night at RFK, DC United faces off with the Charleston Battery in the final of the US Open Cup. Tickets are on sale, and cheaper than the Nationals, and chances are, we’ll come out on top and take home the Dewar Cup for the year. While the US Open Cup used to be an all-amateur competition, since 1995 it’s been open to MLS and other American Pro Soccer teams. It’d be mighty nice to see at least ONE championship come home to DC this year.

United racked up a 0-0 tie against the Red Bulls this past weekend, leaving them at .500, with 32 points. Fourth in the Eastern Division, sure, but that put them inside the playoff structure, given that they can hold it up for another 8 games.

But, what about our other teams?

As August comes to a close, we should all be thankful for the amazing weather we’ve had this summer in DC. Sure, there were a few weeks with temperatures in the high 90’s and Vietnam-like humidity, but for the most part we’ve had many reasonable days in the 80’s – perfect weather for baseball and beer. Well, pretty much perfect weather for anything and beer, but when I look at this photo I want to Metro over to the Nationals stadium, buy a ticket, gorge myself with a halfsmoke from Ben’s, and wash it down with a really expensive cup of beer, all the while knowing that our team is destined to find a way to lose.

With only a month left of baseball for the Nats, why not go drink some beer in our new stadium? Might as well get as much out of your tax dollars as you can. They host the Dodgers tonight through Thursday followed by a series against the Braves through the weekend. Be sure to memorize the lyrics to Sweet Caroline for an extra good time.

Look at the close-up of these stairs. Note the grip tape at the edge of the steps is already almost gone. And that the star itself has a large crack in it. These would be Nationals Stadium stairs. Wait, let me describe them better:

These are $611 million dollar stairs less than an year old. And they’re already falling apart.

Now you know why the Lerners are withholding payments from the city. I wouldn’t pay a builder if their work was this bad too. I would pay for better shoes though – that would be a whole other stadium attendee.

Sports Fix: Redskins Romp, United Triumph, Nationals Abysmal

The Redskins are doing their best to impress this pre-season, racking up their third win on Saturday night against the Jets, 13-10, in New York. Soap-opera star, er, quarterback Colt Brennan was impressive for the ‘Skins, leading a fourth-quarter rally to push us over the top. The big story, unfortunately, was that Brett Favre started for the Jets, and that seems to be all anyone can talk about. It’s fine, though, fortunately his presence overshadowed the Skins disappointing performance from their starters. It definitely was the bench that won this game for them.

One little tidbit out of ESPN before we head on to DC United, apparently there’s talk of Usain Bolt heading to the NFL as a receiver. Dan Snyder, if you’re listening, get this guy now. It’d be hilarious to see cornerbacks try to cover the fastest man in the world.

Sports Fix: Redskins Start Strong, Nationals Sweep

Congratulations to brand-new-Hall-of-Famers Darrell Green and Art Monk. I know several of my friends who believe that the Hall’s snub of Monk for so long is one of the great injustices of the world to date, and it’s nice to see it finally resolved. Of course, Kissing Suzy Kolber had the best version of Monk’s acceptance speech, which actually made me choke on my coffee with laughter.

Of course, what made the rest of the weekend so sweet was Jim Zorn’s first pre-season victory, a 30-16 effort over the Indianapolis Colts. Rookie Colt Brennan looked good in the second half with a pair of TDs behind center. Of course, it’s still the pre-season, but any win is a good win over the Colts, even if they were short 7 of their starters. But, of all the words in the press this weekend, Wise’s are wisest: “Until they win like [the 80s/90s Redskins] again, the compare-and-contrast game will never end.” So, here’s to the Skins, may they again rise in glory. But what of the Nationals?

There’s a 50% off deal going on at online vendor Fathead’s website where you can get the Nationals logo in a 4-foot by 3 foot removable wall-sticker when you buy some other full-priced Fathead thing. (Okay, you can get any MLB logo but why would you want any of the others?) Their website has kind of a cool feature where you can see what the Nats logo your selected MLB logo will look like in a bedroom, office, game room or den. It’s just a little auto-compositing where they overlay it on a stock image, but it’s still nifty.

Well, the tech is nifty. The selection of images for sample bedrooms is a little less than brilliant, however, since the kid sitting in the room and looking up at the logo is wearing an A’s sweatshirt. I can only imagine he’s looking up there and thinking “Wait, who? I’ve never seen any of those games on tv…”

Kastles Trump Aces After Rain Delay

The Washington Kastles ended their regular season last night with a 22-17 win over the Western Conference’s last place St Louis Aces. Unfortunately, a beautiful night of tennis turned into quite a rainstorm. The sold out crowd was invited to stay dry in the VIP tent in hopes that the rain would pass, but as soon as the storm got worse and the tent started flooding, team owner Mark Ein made the call to move the match to the East Potomac Tennis Center at Hains Point. Once play resumed, sets of mixed doubles and women’s doubles were split between the two teams, forcing the match into overtime which was won by the Washington-Jones women’s duo.

It’s hard to say good things about the Nationals. Last in the NL East, and 15 games back of the Mets. 23 games under .500.

But, hey, we won 2 of 3 from the Braves in Atlanta. And, Sunday’s win, much like Saturday’s, was proof that the Nationals do, in fact, have an offense that can produce some serious runs when the stars align. Unfortunately, most of the time, we’re in discord.
