She/He Loves DC is a series highlighting the people who love this city as much as we do.
Pamela Sorensen, much like our team of writers, is passionate about this city. So passionate in fact that she founded her own website – Pamela’s Punch – which, according to the site, has become a leading source of information for the “who, what, when, and where” of DC’s social, professional, and philanthropic scene.
What is it about DC that makes it home to you?
I’ve been here since 1990 and never have I left to move to any other city as an adult. Since I’ve held various positions that required me to drive all over the DMV for years, I feel like I know the area like the back of my hand … it’s changed so much, but for the good. The spirit of a wholesome southern, large village appeals to me and at the same time, it’s sophisticated, educated, welcoming and comfortable. Even though I have my “haunts,” exploring new neighborhoods and meeting new circles keeps it fresh.
Describe your perfect day in DC. Where would you go and what would you do?
My perfect day in DC would have much to do with the weather. 70 degrees, azure skies, blooming flowers … with no pollen of course. One of the few “spring” days we get to experience. I’d love to have breakfast at the Blue Duck Tavern on The Terrace with a few girlfriends. Then since I never get to do it, it would be wonderful to take in several of our art galleries that are off the beaten path near Dupont Circle. Lunch would be at one of my favorite spots, Peacock Cafe in Georgetown and it would be time to open the wine. Shopping in Georgetown would be next and I would love to end the day at Le Diplomate for dinner and drinks. And if we were up for it, meeting other friends out for a nightcap along 14th or U Street. That area has so much energy and talented chefs. It’s got such a hip urban vibe.

What’s your favorite hidden gem of a location in DC? How did you find it and why do you love it?
I love the Einstein statue. Not a lot of people know about it! And I find peace along the running trails following the Potomac River. The scenery is just breathtaking … and I always stop and take it in and think, WOW. And I get to LIVE here.
Who’s your favorite DC personality and why?
Michael Wilbon. He’s a great friend and mentor from years ago. Granted he’s a Chicagoan, however, he has made his home here (in Bethesda) and is just a kind, generous, giving person, who does so much for the community. Plus, he’s a sportscaster and journalist – we FINALLY have gotten around to being proud of our teams – Go KASTLES, CAPS and NATS!
Which philanthropic organizations or causes in DC do you feel personally attached to and why?
Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation – it’s a client and I was with the founder, Michael Sapienza, from the beginning. This start up charity truly embodies what this town can do by partnering, hard work, smart work, networking, reaching out and executing. Next year they will be four years old and looking at about a $10 million budget. Fashion for Paws, again I was there from the beginning, 7 years ago. Can you tell I love start ups? Tara de Nicolas is talented, a trooper, a leader and a creative genius with a kind heart. It’s been an honor to have modeled and fundraised for 2 years and emceed the rest. The Red Cross of the National Capital Area. I have the utmost respect for Linda Mathes (CEO) and I got involved years ago during their 100 year anniversary gala, selling tables. Then she convinced me to be the spokesperson and Chair for the the annual Oscar Night fundraiser. It’s such an important organization and it’s been an honor to have served them.
