We Love Weekends – Apr 26-28

Joanna: With family in town this weekend, a traditional visit to Shelly’s Back Room is in order. And since these Castles are Irish Jews – rare as leprechauns – it’s guaranteed we’ll also stop by Star and Shamrock. If we weren’t doing that Friday, I’d probably check out Dramathon at Theater J, which raises money for The Theatre Lab’s scholarship fund through readings of 10-minute plays by local playwrights. I’m also seeing Mary T. and Lizzie K. at Arena Stage somewhere in there, which the Great Jenn says is a Great Show. On Sunday I’m watching the fab Lauren Boston in Listen to Your Mother at Synetic Theater before heading out to Silver Spring to hear Noa open the Jewish Music Festival. Oy! That’s a lot.

Rachel: This weekend is a standard spring weekend for me — music and baseball. Friday night there’s a concert at Ebenezers Coffeehouse that I’d never miss in a million years. My buddies Zia Hassan, Don Kim, and Dave Farah are playing an acoustic show along with Kiirstin Marilyn. They’re all fantastic songwriters in their own right and they all have spectacular voices that’ll leave you wanting more. I strongly recommend this show. If you come, I promise there’ll be free hugs and plenty of laughter! Then, I’ll be heading to Nats Park on Saturday for some day game baseball as the Nats face the Cincinnati Reds before a night in Rosslyn spent celebrating my favorite dog’s (yes, a real dog, I have no shame) birthday party. Afterward, I’m sure the human attendees at that party will end up out and about in the Court House area — most likely at Ragtime or Four Courts. Next up is softball Sunday at Stoddert Field with the GPCSL. Good times indeed.

Tom: Weeeeekeeeeeeend! After last week’s successful trip to Chicago, I’m thinking there’s a lot to accomplish here. But first, priorities, and that means the Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival which runs all afternoon & evening on Saturday. There will be pickin’ & chunkin’ and that’s going to be marvelous. Also on the docket is a longer ride through perfect cool morning weather that morning, possibly out the W&OD Trail toward Vienna.  This is also a perfect barbecue weekend, so I’ll be firing up the grill with some deliciousness from various local purveyors.

Katie: A friend and I were inspired by the book Wild, paired with Max’s post from earlier this week, and we’re taking to the woods this weekend for some hiking. Saturday evening, I’m headed to a friend’s house for grilling and I’ll probably be picking up a side item at Red Apron in Union Market. Sunday, I’ll be cheering on a friend in the Nike Women’s Half Marathon and then finally getting around to trying GBD. I’ve heard glorious things about the grapefruit campari doughnut, so expectations are running high!

Patrick: Friday I’m going to try and make it out to Nationals Park for a friend’s Birthday. It should be an exciting match-up against the Reds and Jordan Zimmermann (3-1) has been throwing pretty well. Saturday I’ll be in Shirlington to review No Rules’ “The Personals”. Sunday I’m taking a friend who just moved into town to one of my favorite museums: The Newseum.

Don: After a week where I’ve been simultaneously getting brought up to speed on a new job and handling transition activities for an old one my real desire for this weekend is to spend it in a coma. But Monday and its responsibilities – and, as it stands, projections of rain – will come soon enough, so the brood and I will likely try to spend a little time out and enjoying the sunshine. I’m about technologied-out, so some nature sounds good. Roosevelt Island is a favorite and we’ve yet to bring our new son there. A little time at the Columbia island marina sitting at a park bench and looking at the water is always pleasant.

Fedward:  Last weekend we were in Philadelphia; this weekend we’re staying close in.  Tonight we’re going to take advantage of the weather and treat ourselves to cocktails on our patio.  Saturday is Maryland Day, so we’ll check out the campus and have our annual ice cream from the dairy.  We’ll also make time for the Franciscan Monastery Garden Guild’s annual herb and plant sale, since between my bad pruning and the winter we’ve lost a number of plants (note to other brown thumbs: chives and mint seem the best at surviving our incompetence).  Sunday we’ll head up to the AFI Silver for the Masters of Silent Comedy shorts collection, with live accompaniment by the Snark Ensemble.  We still plan our usual brunch at the Passenger, but with this weekend’s scheduled track work that might not happen.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
