We Love Weekends, January 29-30

Addison: If I survive Snow-tastrophe 2011, this weekend I plan on making the trek out to Tysons Corner, since I haven’t bought new work clothes in 2 years and will (hopefully) have a bunch of interviews coming up before I get my master’s in May.  Saturday night, I’m going to be hitting up Bayou in Georgetown for a friend’s birthday. Brunch on Sunday will be at Churchkey with some friends and WLDC staff where we sample the number one sandwich in the country, the Luther.  The rest of the weekend will likely be spent in a diabetic coma.

Dave: Have to say, not even a smidge of snow and the subsequent overblown reaction can dampen my spirits for hanging around DC this weekend. I’m finally here for about six weeks straight, so I’m looking forward to getting reacquainted with this District of mine. Friday night will involve a night around Columbia Heights, sounds like a birthday celebration will take me to The Hub. Saturday’s big event will be a musical appearance with the rest of The Greensides at the DC chapter of Penn State alumni’s fundraiser for its Thon event. On Sunday, I’m hoping to join the WLDC Luther competition at Churchkey – even if we apparently don’t get health benefits through our authorship, according to the higher-ups.

Marissa: This weekend I’ve got two friends from out of town here. Thus, I have been given the task to pick a restaurant for us to go to. So after agonizing over who had an appetizing menu, who still had reservations, what type of food we wanted and all that, we let Groupon make the decision for us and decided to cash it in at Hook. I’m also looking forward to trying the Italian Store out in Arlington for the first time ever, hoping that maybe I’ll find a deli that’s on par with those back in New Jersey (maybe I ought to open one myself…). And maybe I’ll get out to take some pictures around snowy DC, if there’s still snow on the ground!

Patrick Palafox: I’m going commercial and will be contributing to the movie industry by going to a picture show over in the Tyson’s area with my brother and family. If I know my family we will mozy through the entire mall and look at things we will never buy, but probably we will buy something just because we never leave anywhere empty handed. I personally look forward to diving onto a LoveSac that has probably been jumped on by thousands of other people and by the time the sales guy attempts at selling me one I’m going to run away and get a nice cup of coffee. Once I burn the roof of my mouth I will start to cry and my brother will pick me up and carry me home, but not before grabbing a soft serve to stop the tears.

Erin: I turn 30 on Friday and will be celebrating with some of the finest friends in the world at Little Miss Whiskey’s. I assume that’s all I’ll be doing, because, like, nothing happens after you turn 30, right? The world just stops? Provided the Earth continues to spin, I’ll be spending the next day sleeping off the effects of turning 30 surrounded by some of the finest friends in the world at Little Miss Whiskey’s. It’s right there in the name, people. Little Miss WHISKEY’S. God, I’m going to be 30.

Paulo: Whenever we get snow like this I love to go to Theodore Roosevelt Island or the Melvin Hazen Trail just to take in the sublimeness of it all (as sublime as 7 inches of snow gets, anyway). If it starts to get too cold, maybe a quick trip down to the Hirshhorn to watch Hans Op de Beeck’s Staging Silence in the Black Box.

Michael: On Friday night I am driving up to Baltimore to finally catch J.Robbins’ latest band, Office of Future Plans, in concert. Bonus: They are playing at The Wind-Up Space, a venue I have never been to. I am doubly psyched. So much so, that I have made no other plans for the weekend. So they better be good!

Tiff: We’re throwing a party Friday night that revolves around using up the briskets from our cow share, so I’ll be spending Friday night and Saturday cooking. We’ll also be busting out the grill, weather permitting (and Tom has a very generous definition of “weather permitting” when it comes to using the grill). Sunday, while my kitchen is still a disaster, I expect to be organizing my day around letting other people cook for me. I’m thinking another brunch at Rustik has to happen.

  1. As a NJ native who lived in Courthouse, I can attest that the Italian Store is the closest thing you’ll find to home down here, Marissa. Now that I’m in Cap Hill unfortunately Taylor, while delicious, is my almost-but-not-quite substitute.

  2. Marissa – I grew up in NJ too. The Itailian Store is the best sandwich shop around these parts. I prefer their subs over Hoagies from back home actually. Enjoy!

Erin – Happy Birthday for tomorrow!

  3. @Marissa-I’m not from NJ, or even the east coast, but I know good food and The Italian Store is phenom! But get there early or call in your order cause you’ll be waiting for a good hour otherwise.

  4. I don’t mean to be an arse, but I’m unsubscribing from this blog because of these posts. It’s not interesting to see what 4 people are doing and read their blocks of text. I don’t know you people. You should consider describing something like what’s *available* rather than what Melissa or Joan or whatever is doing with her cat.

Yes, yes, I know; if I don’t like it, I don’t have to read it. Well, that’s exactly the path I’m choosing. I just wanted to vocalize my reasoning. I know I come across as a dick–sorry– but generally when one lurker feels a certain way, many others who never speak up do as well.

  5. Sorry that this 5% of our content is not to your liking. I’m sure any of the 1,378 highly original event listings available in DC will be more to your taste.

  6. Kim – thanks for the tip. And I’ll report back on what I actually think of their sandwiches. I’ve got my fingers crossed. But frankly, it’s just too damn hard to beat the NJ delis.

  7. Aw, I like reading about your weekends. Always helps me get ideas! I hope you all have lots of fun :)

  8. Thanks, DCNative. That’s kind of the idea behind it: not to provide a gussied-up event listing, but to use our weekend habits as a prompt to help people come up with their own plans. Sometimes we’re checking out museums or sports or whatever, but sometimes we’re baking or digging potatoes at the CSA farm.

And I’m sure it’s not to everyone’s preference, but I’m sure that’s true of a lot of our other content as well. And that’s okay- we write about what we like, figuring that while every post isn’t interesting to every person, every post is interesting to *someone*, and if a particular piece doesn’t interest someone, there are many other pieces on the page that might.

    Thanks for reading. :)

Pretending to be people you’re not is flat-out unacceptable and a violation of our comment policy. Knock it off. – dw

  10. The Italian Store is not worth the trip. Sorry. Anyone who thinks their sandwiches resemble what you can get in NJ has been living in the DC area for far too long!

  11. Tiffany – Someone’s trying to be high-larious by leaving comments under my name. It’s not me.

    Stay classy, troll.

  12. I LOVE THE INTERNET. Also trolls, if you’re trying to provoke me to a reaction, I recommend trying harder. “Boring cow” barely merits attention in the long list of “shit I have been subjected to as a female on the Internet.”

  13. @Caroline – If you think the Italian Store is not worth the trip I think you may be ordering the wrong things. That place is wonderful.

Not only is it worth the trip for their amazing sandwiches, it also serves as an excllent Italian packaged goods grocery store. Not to mention the fact that it is one of the most community-loved businesses in Arlington. The wait isn’t that bad when you consider all of the great conversation one can find in there.
