A city never content to open just one establishment serving nicer versions of a trendy food (see: burgers, frozen yogurt, wine bars, et al), the district is about to get a another adorable cupcakery – Dupont Circle’s long-awaited Hello, Cupcake – to directly compete with the formidable Georgetown Cupcake.
Thanks to a tip from The Washington Post, I was alerted that Hello, Cupcake will be opening on Monday, August 25.
Expect traditional, vegan, and gluten-free cupcakes in a wide variety of enticing flavors. I am not sure what a root beer float cupcake might be like, but I know a certain float-lover who will be getting one as a belated birthday cake to find out.
Given the popularity and reputation of Georgetown Cupcake – recently fawned over by no less than the food critic for The New York Times – they will be a hard act to follow, which is to say nothing of Cake Love, Buzz, and the many other cupcake-bakers around. Still, Hello, Cupcake wins for cutest name for sure (and, by appearances, overall cuteness as well), and we are looking forward to a delicious debut.
[Author’s note: Typing the word “cupcake” that many times seems about as cloying as actually eating the aforementioned sweets. It makes me sympathetic to Ira Glass’ public statements that, after moving to New York from Chicago, he decided to take a stand of non-trendiness by refusing to eat a single cupcake until the whole fad blew over because it was just over-saturated in NYC. Hopefully, these local independent shops will find a way to succeed even after inevitable cupcake-fatigue hits D.C.]
