We Love Weekends, May 1-2

Max: Since I’ll be taking Friday off this week, I’m going to pretend that Thursday is part of the weekend.  I’ll be going to the Freer and Sackler Galleries for Asia After Dark to eat, drink, and be cultured, before picking up some friends from DCA.  They’re both DC virgins which means I’ll be showing them all of the major monuments, a Smithsonian gallery or two, the National Cathedral, and of course visiting Lauriol Plaza for numerous margaritas and queso dip.  If they’re not burnt out we may check out some of the embassies during the Around the World Embassy Tour.  I can already tell you what I’ll be doing next weekend: absolutely nothing.

Rebecca: My weekend centers around the 85th running of Gold Cup taking place this Saturday at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia. If you’re not familiar with Gold Cup, it’s a day at the track with steeplechase races, Jack Russell Terrier races, corporate sponsored tents, tons of tailgatingcornholing, hat contests and UBER-preppy clothing. So Friday I’ll be resting up and making jello shots for Saturday’s bus ride over to the race. Saturday will be completely dominated by race day and debauchery. Sunday will involve heavy recovery and hydration activities with perhaps a trip to Z-Burger for some much need greasy, hangover-cure food.

Ben: The hockey season lives on in our household starting Friday, though I’ll refrain from mentioning who we stand behind for the sake of our Caps fan readers. Saturday will see some outdoor activities to take advantage of the great weather, followed by attending a friend’s art showing at the Addison/Ripley Fine Art gallery (look for a review next week). Sunday is when we cook meat with fire and probably slip over to the Corcoran for the Eadweard Muybridge exhibit before walking the Tidal Basin at sunset.

Don: Most of my weekend is going to be spent with art show related activities. You probably wouldn’t find the time I’m going to spend working in my woodshop and catching up on Planet Money episodes all that interesting but I promise to let you know when we next do a show. In the mean time you can go check out the Washington International Fine Arts Festival at National Harbor. My old friend from Miami, Ed King, will be there with his paintings. The one above lives in my dining room and is not for sale but he’ll be happy to sell you others.

Corinne: This weekend I am going to stop and breathe after meeting yet another deadline at work. Friday I will be out at the Barns at Wolf Trap listening to Scottish fiddler Bonnie Rideout. Saturday day I’d like to squeeze in the Mount Pleasant Music Fest and the Around the World Embassy Tour, which kicks off “Passport DC.” Saturday night I’ll make a return to one of my favorite D.C. ‘hoods, H Street NE, this time to check out new tavern-deli Star and Shamrock. Sunday sounds like a good day for Eastern Market and its spring/summer music series (at the corner of 7th Street and North Carolina Avenue)—local bluegrass band Dean Men’s Hollow plays at 10:30 a.m. for all you early risers out there!

Rachel: I have to admit this now — I’m going to be painfully boring this weekend and I’m 100% okay with that. But I do have a few things to look forward to, they include a softball game under the lights Sunday night at Guy Mason Field with the Glover Park Co-Ed Softball League, checking out The Constellations at DC9 on Monday, and some some light and leisurely baseball reading by Zack Hample (Watching Baseball Smarter).

Tom: There are just a few big events for me this weekend.  Friday night I’ll be up at UMD for the Weezer/Ben Foldsconcert that I’ve been looking forward to for some time.  I’m a huge fan of Ben Folds live in concert, and getting to see Weezer, too, is pretty much the best thing since sliced musical bread.  Saturday is DC United‘s contest against the New York Red Bulls at RFK.  Off their win last night, we’ll see if we can’t make pink cows out of them.  I’m also working to finish the last class of my Masters Degree, which should be a fun weekend of writing and studying, as well.

Tiff: In addition to the Weezer/Ben Folds concert Tom mentioned, one of my goals for our first few months in our new neighborhood is to actually get out and MEET MY NEIGHBORS. This weekend offers a great opportunity- Brookland Clean-Up Day. So I’ll be setting aside an hour or two at least to go out and pick up some trash around 12th St., meeting good neighbors by being a good neighbor.
