Wednesday, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History will receive an extra-special gift from the First Lady when she donates her inaugural gown to its First Ladies Collection. The one-shouldered white chiffon number designed by Jason Wu helped Mrs. Obama sparkle at a total of ten inaugural balls that night in January 2009.

The dress will be the latest addition to a new gallery entitled “A First Lady’s Debut,” which will display inaugural dresses including those of Helen Taft and Eleanor Roosevelt. At Wednesday’s ceremony, Obama will donate the gown in front of Wu and a group of fashion students from New York’s Huntington High School. It will join the ranks of prized possessions from every first lady dating all the way back to 1912.

  1. Barack Obama’s book, “The Audacity of Hope,” shows a appealing title. It has an idea of bravery mixed confidently. There is nothing Pollyanna about it. I will not support every little thing he says, but he’s our president, and then for me, he creates trust. That may do more for just a region than any amount of backroom deals. Hope gives us energy, and energy sustains us through trying times. Boy, we’ve had them. I’m from West Texas, and I did not vote for Bush. When McCain ran against Obama, I used to be a citizen of Arizona, but I gave audacious hope a chance. The fight for progress and laying the foundations of prosperity will not be over. I have seen the quips of those that don’t believe Obama is capable of it. But step back a second. Would anyone have most of us fail only to tarnish the star of an incumbent for whom they did not vote? Trying to keep our priorities straight, let’s work together with our president and build our future.
