It’s happening! Costco is coming to DC.
The City Paper broke the news late yesterday afternoon. According to them, At-Large Councilmember Kwame Brown “claims” that Costco has “finalized an agreement” with developers that would place the bulk-item store to Fort Lincoln.
The eventual home of the bulk-item superstore is near the intersection of New York and South Dakota Avenues NE.
There is no further insight into when the store will start being built, but at least now we know where we can start buying our crates of Ramen and cheap socks.
I’m more troubled by the announcement that the Pentagon City location will be closing in a couple of years. It’s a heck of a schlep to other area locations, including way out in Northeast.
I had no idea the Pentagon City location was closing. I heard once that the PC Costco was one of the top 10 producing warehouse clubs in the country (including Sam’s and BJ’s). I suppose the rent is very expensive. That is troubling.
I wonder if the new location is going in by or in place of the Goodwill HQ where there used to be a retail store and large processing facility.
I’m curious if the new Costco in DC will sell hard liquor. The PC Costco has a great selection of beer and wine, but obviously can’t sell liquor since it’s in VA. I’ve been to a Costco in Chicago and they had a huge liquor section, with some great prices.
What are the chances that DC would allow that? I’m pretty sure the MD Costco’s in our area only have beer and wine too (or not even that).
