We Love Weekends, November 7-8

Does anyone else feel like this is the longest week ever? I’m so relieved the weekend is almost here. Here’s what we’ve got going on this weekend. Share your plans with us in the comments.

Tiff: My birthday is next week, so I’m kicking off the celebration a little early. On Friday, I’ll be catching dj lil’e and Super Diamond at the 9:30. On Saturday, I think sleeping off the exhaustion of the last couple of weeks is in order, followed by Dhoonya Dance’s Bollyb!end. Sunday is still up in the air, though it’s possible I may get out the camera since I had to miss last night’s photowalk.

Corinne: I’m excited to delve into FotoWeek this weekend with its many activities scattered around the city. Saturday, if I can find any takers-with-vehicle, I’d love to head out of the city to soak in autumn in all its glory, perhaps at some vineyards or on a nearby hiking trail. Sunday I hope to pick up some much needed tips at The Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show at the Convention Center. Sunday night I’ll be cheering on those Globetrotters, hoping they do some more Dutch dancing…or at least arrive first at the Amazing Race Pit Stop.

Kirk: I’m thinking that I may take some time out of doors and catch the last of the fall color at the National Arboretum on Saturday afternoon.  Hopefully the weather will stay brisk and we’ll actually get some sun, this weekend.  I’ll follow that up with some jazz at the HR-57.  Man do I love good jazz.

Katie: This weekend I’ll be checking out Kaz Okochi (Kaz Sushi Bistro) and Richard Sandoval (Zengo)’s newest small plate concept, Masa 14. I always liked Chef de Cuisine Antonio Burrell‘s food when he was at CommonWealth Gastropub, so I’m interested to see what he’s doing with latin and asian flavors. As a bonus, they have more than 100 different varieties of tequila, which is my favorite kind of liquor. (Yeah, it really is. I know, right?)  If I had more time, I might head out to Hanover, Maryland to do some shopping and watch the Lego Master Build construct a 12-ft tall LEGO Holiday Tree in the Pinball Court. If I were feeling more mellow, I would take a trip to see Marise Riddell‘s paintings at the McLean Project for the Arts. Riddell’s art contemplates order and chaos, which speaks to my quarter-life crisis. Instead, I’ll probably cozy up on the couch with some hot chocolate and watch Glee.

Carl: I will be in Richmond on Saturday but if I were in town, I would definitely go to the Darnestown Presbyterian Church bazaar. On Sunday at 2:00 I will get my head shaved as part of the Be Brave and Shave fundraiser for Children’s National Medical Center’s cancer research fund. Come to Westover Plaza on Washington Blvd. in Arlington and watch the spectacle. About 100 of us are getting shaved. Me, I have raised a bit over $620 so far. After getting shorn, I will enjoy a cold one over at the Lost Dog cafe – the original, old skool one. Anyone want to join me?

Paulo: On Friday at noon I’ll be visiting National City Christian Church at Thomas Circle for “Magical, Mystical, Musical Machine,” a pipe organ recital series featuring Dr. Lawrence Schreiber (music minister at my own church and a brilliant organist and composer). Through Saturday and Sunday the wife and I continue the process of furnishing our condo via whirlwind tours of upscale local household retail establishments like the Pentagon City Costco, Chinatown Bed Bath and BeyondAlexandria Crate and Barrel Outlet, and Columbia Heights Target. Classy, eh?

Ben: This weekend – aside from Caps and Pens game-watching –  we’re taking family to the Newseum (look for a Tourism article on it in the next couple of weeks) and reminisce about the fall of the Berlin Wall. Afterward is dinner, probably at Reserve, Zaytinya or Cafe Atlantico. Sunday is “prep the yard for winter” day, including much leaf-raking, though we’ll reward ourselves with a trip to the Foxfire Grill in the evening.

Donna: On Saturday morning, I’ll be helping to lead the second-ever DC Trash Run, a brief run/walk and cleanup in Rock Creek. If I’m on a roll after that, I’ll stop by the Neighborhood Cleanup & Storm Drain Marking near Four Mile Run, an area that’s beautiful though needs some TLC. Saturday night, I’m hoping to check out the new Church Key. Sunday will be another great day to get outside, and while I’d love to hike, I’m also curious about the Pumpkin Madness Days in Centreville, where they “recycle” pumpkins by tossing them from catapults and dropping them from on high. This might be entertaining…at least for a short time.

Max: Usually I have no idea what I’m doing on any given weekend until Friday night hits and my friends give me the low down.  However this weekend is the beginning of FotoWeek!  I’ll be attending the launch party Friday night in Georgetown and can’t wait to see the work by this year’s finalists.  Saturday is jam packed with art activities.  First is the Transformer Auction (tickets still available!), next is Fixation at the new Industry Gallery, then I’ll head over to Fight Club to see David Alan Harvey Presents.  On Sunday I’ll probably check out the What Lies Beneath: Nature & Urban Landscape in EU Photography show over at the House of Sweden.  Be on the lookout Friday at 1PM for my overview of FotoWeek events that you cannot miss.
