If you’re all revved up from your morning ride today on Bike to Work Day, you may be glad to know you’ll soon have a new route for commuting–or simply playing outside, carbon free–starting Saturday, June 6. The multi-use Woodrow Wilson Bridge Trail, built for two-wheeled and two-footed travel, will open at 1 p.m., on what just happens to be National Trails Day.
Just over a mile long, this trail will connect Alexandria and Prince George’s County, so you can ride from Virginia’s Mt. Vernon Trail to Maryland’s section of the Potomac Heritage trail. I’m thinking drinks and snacks in Georgetown or Rosslyn, then again in Old Town, and then again in National Harbor…. There will be telescopes on the bridge, so on the way you can check out the scenery or spy on folks.
Word has it several cycling groups and local governments are planning to lead convoys of cyclists over the bridge. Keep an eye on the Oxon Hill bike club and WABA next week for details, but mark your calendar now! Maybe you can even lock up at one of those new cow-themed bike racks.
but where does it actually take you, on the other side?
Hi, Simon.
On the Maryland side, it will take you to the Potomac Heritage trail, which you can follow into National Harbor and into Southern Maryland: http://www.potomacallegheny.org/PHT_Guide_Southern_Maryland.html
You also can take it north into DC: http://www.potomacallegheny.org/PHT_Guide_WashDC.html
Here’s another link that will get you from Point A to Point B, http://washcycle.typepad.com/home/2006/07/huntington_stre.html.
Hope this helps – happy trails!
