Luke’s Lobster isn’t a big space, and you could almost walk by it…that is if
it weren’t for the long line stretching out the door during lunch. The crustacean place is really all you would expect and more.
A New York import, Luke’s Lobster has done so well in its openening week that it already ran out of crab, but will be getting a delivery ASAP (so maybe by the time you read this Wednesday). You obviously can’t leave Luke’s without trying the famous lobster roll, but if you are hungry or with a friend, I would suggest going for the Taste of Maine. Logistically you place your order, get a ticket, wait and then pick it up from the Pick Up window.
The ToM comes with one half lobster roll, one half crab roll and a half shrimp roll plus the requisite Maine Root Soda and kettle chips. For a extra nice touch you also get two Empress crab claws with sauce. The rolls are all filled with meat – with the lobster roll coming in place number one.
You can’t read about Luke’s without hearing about their crispy, buttery rolls and it is true. The mix of chilled seafood on warm rolls is great. Here you get “a swipe of mayo, a sprinkle of lemon butter and a dash of secret spices.” Though to be safe, just a forewarning that if you don’t like mayo, it really is a bit more than a “swipe.” Not that I am complaining.
Second warning: don’t come here with group of ten and think you are sitting down. Last time in was there I counted 13 chairs – so take that lobster to go or back to the office.
If anything the prices are higher than one might be accustomed to for a casual lunch. A lobster roll combo is $17, a Taste of Maine is $21, and the Noah’s Ark (think ToM times two) is $40 – but it is really about what you are getting. Fresh seafood like this can’t be beat, so treat yourself.
Plus you might just fall in love with the lobster chair upholstery and lobster claw salt shakers.
Luke’s Lobster is located at 624 E St. NW, Washington, DC. The closest metro stop is Gallery Place-Chinatown (Red/Green/Yellow Lines). For more information, call (202) 347-3355.
