‘testudo with exam offerings’

I came across this photo in the We Love DC Flickr Pool, and I have to say, I love it. What at first glance may seem like trash around a turtle statue is actually, according to photog staceyviera, humble offerings to Testudo for good exam grades. UMD students took exams last week, so hopefully the good grades will start rolling in soon! Good luck, guys– I hope Testudo is on your side.
They say that a freshman, not understanding the lore and wisdom of Testudo once drank from his left offerings, muttering something about Jobu needing a refill. He was not seen again after a lab final with the cyclotron went horribly horribly wrong.
Testudo is not a place on campus – it is the mascot of UMD, and there are several statues of testudo around campus. The one in this particular picture is in front of McKeldin Library.
