I don’t drink liquor. Okay, I just lied. I do drink liquor, sometimes, when it’s high quality. But I’ve basically sworn off liquor and become a beer girl, at least 98% if the time. This way, I don’t wind up reliving my glory days of study abroad in Australia, and have horrible stomach pains as a result. Now I’m more mature, or something like that. I’ve always gotten along with tequila (I’m an anomaly, no one can explain it, I’m like a medical miracle) and so my 2% of liquor drinking is usually reserved for times when I can indulge in my very favorite drink: a frozen marg. And with my favorite marg holiday upon us, where will one go to snag my favorite liquor drink?
Well, first off, you’ll have to decide you want to brave the crowds. I’ll be taking my marg on a friend’s back porch with a side of homemade tacos this year to honor the recessionista in all of us. But if you’ve decided you’re down for going out in celebration, then here are your options:
Looking for something off the beaten path and by the water? Rosa Mexicano‘s National Harbor location would be a fun option away from the Penn Quarter crush.
Also along the water, but hardly fancy like National Harbor, Cantina Marina in Southeastwest has some specials going on, all with the added bonus of breeze and waterfront views.
Lauriol Plaza takes my vote for the best margs in the city. Try the swirl. You won’t regret it.
La Sandía Mexican Kitchen & Bar in Tysons Corner Center will be rocking the house from 4 to 8 p.m. and serving up a prix fixe menu for $29. A special menu will be available through May 7.
Oyamel, although they’re not doing anything specific, is an excellent stand-by for delish mexican and margs, always.
The Cinco de Mayo happy hour at Chi Cha Lounge will be benefiting charity, if you’re looking for some karma with your tequila.
Lunch or breakfast more your thing? Try my favorite lunchtimen taco stand-by Taqueira National. Sadly, they don’t have margs – but are you really to drink during the workday? (Don’t answer that.)
Cheers!
Ok, it’s interesting that you drink tequila as your sole liquor, because someone once told me that tequila is a stimulant, not a depressant, because of its agave plant origins. If anyone wants to weigh in to solve this mystery, please do!
All I have to say is that I second Lauriol Plaza’s swirl margs as the best in town. They go down easy and don’t give you puckered marg face, all the while getting you nice and buzzed.
Cantina Marina is in Southwest, on the Waterfront, not Southeast. We locals are particular….
my bad, my bad. corrected. thanks, glenn.
