Yesterday, while many of us were observing the aftermath of an atrocity, thousands of supporters of the DC vote marched on the Capitol despite lousy weather. It won’t be an easy fight, though. While the current bill is likely to pass the House with a significant majority, the Senate is a wholly separate matter. There’s also significant opposition from the White House, who sees the bill as unconstitutional. Minority Leader John Boehner’s spokesman said:
“House Republicans are not opposed to giving D.C. residents representation in Congress. But they are opposed to running roughshod over the Constitution.”
Which is fairly odd to see, especially when I have seen no attempt from House Republicans to make an alternate method of franchise for the District’s elected representatives. Funny how they can hide behind the Constitution for this measure, while violating it with other legislation.
