After yesterday’s ownership press conference, and last night’s excruciating loss, today’s groundbreaking ceremony in Southeast DC completed an emotional rollercoaster for Nationals players, fans and staff. The triumph of finally receiving the news of the club’s new owner, followed the frustration of another last inning loss, followed again by the shovels of dirt this morning, it’s going to be an interesting few years for the Nationals.
Stan Kasten, part of the new ownership group, was primarily responsible for the development of the incredible Atlanta Braves farm system, which has produced a record 11 season run at the front of the National League East. Ted Lerner spoke yesterday of watching baseball in Griffith Stadium when was but a boy, and then ushering there later. These are people who believe in the sport, who understand it, and I welcome them, and this new stadium.
Sitting out at RFK in the cool of spring, watching 4 hours of 9 inning baseball, I can feel that there’s hope for this franchise, even if it’s on the horizon.
