MPD Cancels Expansion Plans

Chief Cathy Lanier announced yesterday that the MPD’s plan to expand the force by 5% has been put on hold due to budget pressures. 5% may not sound like a lot, but it would have meant an extra 200 police officers for the District. Instead, MPD will remain at its current level for the foreseeable future while the budgets return to normal. Recruiting officers and training officers are back to walking the beat and working desks until things pick up again. The good news is, there’s always the Capitol Police, the Federal Protective Service, and the dozens of other policing agencies that exist in DC for specific departments, to back up the MPD in case of any major emergency situation.

Rainbow Media buys DCist Parent Company?

In a deal said to be worth approximately $5-6M, it is rumored that Rainbow Media, a wholly-owned subisidiary of New York’s Cablevision system, has purchased Gothamist LLC which owns the DCist blog here in DC. When asked for comment, DCist Editor Sommer Mathis said she had seen the story, but hadn’t received any information from Gothamist concerning the disposition of any deal.

The story remains unconfirmed, and could be incorrect, but the idea of large media outlet systems like Cablevision purchasing up medium- and large-sized blogs has all kinds of far-reaching consequences. The parallels between websites and radio stations is one that we would do well to remember in this particular situation.

More as the details unfold.

Business Insider says talks are still going on, and Jake Dobkin, despite repeated attempts to get anything else, just said, “No Comment.”

Nats Demote Storen, Strasburg to AA Harrisburg

The Nationals today sent prospects Drew Storen and Stephen Strasburg to the minor leagues, and to the camp of AA Harrisburg. This is actually a huge relief for Nationals fans everywhere, because it means that despite their strong Spring, they’re going to give these guys some time in the minors before bringing them up to the Show.

Thank God.

My biggest fear was that these guys would do so well in the major league camp that they’d have no choice but to bring them up from Viera to Washington for Opening Day and that would have been a huge mistake. Instead the Nats are going to give them a few months of confidence-building starts in AA Harrisburg and AAA Syracuse to build their pitching acumen and get used to the concept of professional baseball.

Look for them both to join the Nationals after the All Star Break, when they’ve decimated everyone they’ve faced in AA and AAA.

Omar Karim Gets Testy on Kojo

video courtesy of the Kojo Show

Omar Karim was on today’s Kojo Nnamdi Show, and boy did he get testy. I mean, I’ve seen some political figures get this angry, but in the clip above, Karim does everything except challenge analyst Tom Sherwood to pistols at dawn. Karim is one of the principals behind Banneker Development which has been in the news for all the wrong reasons, chief among them, they’re the beneficiaries of several contracts to build recreation centers in the District, which the Council will be reviewing for improper award. Karim defends his company’s record, and his relationship with the Mayor, which Karim describes as pretty mundane. Either way, it’s some entertaining watching, as Karim is certainly a fiery guy.

If you don’t have to drive in DC tomorrow, just don’t. The National Marathon is run tomorrow through the streets of DC, and no quadrant is left out. Constitution, East Capitol, North Capitol, the Frederick Douglass Bridge, and various other streets throughout the District will be closing intermittently from 7am to 1pm. Chances are, you’re better off going around. In addition, Metrobus has rerouted 42 different bus routes as part of the event. Please prepare for transit pandemonium.

I’m sorry kids, but you’re going to have to go to school tomorrow.  March 19th was originally scheduled as a professional development day for teachers, meaning students didn’t have to go to school.  But, seeing as you got a few weeks of unforeseen vacation courtesy of mother nature, you don’t actually get tomorrow off. So, make sure you’re in school tomorrow, don’t don’t do crack, follow your dreams, etc….

DC EMS Overtime a Problem

Councilman Phil Mendelson will be looking into the nearly $5M in overtime paid out to Fire and EMS workers so far this fiscal years, with several workers taking home substantial amounts of extra cash, in some cases amounts of more than their annual salary, thanks to Overtime abuses. Does DC Fire/EMS need more people? Is it just people abusing the system?

Social Safeway: The Supermarket Superstar

‘Shopping – Race to the Checkout’

Great googlie mooglie!  With all the interwebz chatter about the grand reopening of the Social Safeway at 1855 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, one would think this was the greatest development in DC since sliced bread, and as one of those local residents, who has been supermarket less for almost a year, and therefore semi-breadless, it is indeed a long awaited event! And no, Whole Paycheck (aka Whole Foods) does not count as a supermarket, even though I do love their produce and two-for-one pizza Tuesdays.

This Safeway is going to be, quite frankly, TheBomb.com. Not only will it be  Safeway’s most state-of-the-art, greenest, opened 24 hours, full-service grocery store to date, but it will also feature: a wine cellar complete with a wine steward, a specialty cheese department with certain varieties flown in fresh daily from Europe; a sit-down sushi bar; brick-oven pizza; Italian-style gelato bar; an upgraded Starbucks coffee bar; indoor/outdoor seating area featuring a fireplace, HD televisions, complimentary WiFi, and open balcony overlooking Wisconsin Avenue; a SunTrust Bank; a Bergmann’s Dry Cleaners; and wait for it……..A NUTBAR!!!!! offering a wide selection of warm, ready-to-eat nuts that can be flavored or ground on site to create spreads and butter. OMG!!!!

Social Safeway 2.0 is set to open its brand spanking new, glorious, long awaited doors May 6th.  From the looks of the construction site’s live webcams, there’s a fair amount of fixing up to do in the next month and a half month. Giddy up Safeway! Giddy Up!

Major Fire at 19th & Sunderland in Dupont

fire in dupont photo credit Angelica Bailey
Photo by Angelica Bailey, special to We Love DC

The office building above the Levante’s restaurant on 19th Street near Dupont Circle is currently in the midst of a serious fire. It started shortly after the lunch hour today, and is currently being fought by a number of DC’s Bravest. Engine 4 (Hornet’s Nest) Ladder 9 and Ladder 14, and an EMS and Fire command units and several ambulances. They’re moving trucks onto New Hampshire Avenue, as well, to fight the fire from all sides. According to EMS scanner reports, the fires are in the ductwork now, probably starting from Levante’s kitchen. They’re venting the roof with an axe and a chain saw right now.

Updates as they come.

And, to add insult to injury, those cars stuck at meters on 19th and elsewhere, trapped by the fire trucks, are all being ticketed. Way to go, DC DPW. (apologies to DDOT who I initially and incorrectly identified as issuing tickets.)

Kwame Brown: Screw a Kid, Get Fired

‘Kwame Brown’

That this needs to be said out loud, or written into law, is one of those moments where you shake your head, laugh, and then quietly cry to yourself inside. Yesterday emergency legislation was sponsored by At-Large councilman Kwame Brown to make sexual contact with a student a fire-able offense at DCPS. While the council has yet to take action, swift passage is expected.

If you’re asking who on God’s green earth would think it was okay to have sex with a student, you need but point to the myriad cases that make it to the rolls of Fark.com every month. But, given the wake of the layoffs scandal at DCPS this past Fall, and Michelle Rhee’s controversial remarks concerning the sexual proclivities of at least one teacher who was RIFfed, I suppose it needs to be done. In the meanwhile, we all weep for DCPS at large.

Ovi Gets Two Game Suspension

‘Check’

As I feared, Alex Ovechkin picked up a two game suspension for his (perfectly acceptable) hit on Brian Campbell. The Caps GM George McPhee said this afternoon: “We have no problem with the way Alex tried to finish his check. Unfortunately, an injury resulted. We are disappointed with the suspension but do not want to comment further.” While we wish Brian Campbell a speedy recovery, this should not have resulted in a suspension. You want a hit that should’ve been a suspension? Check out Cooke vs Savard. Hell, that didn’t even draw a penalty!

Ovi will forfeit $232,000 or so in salary, or approximately an Aston Martin DB9. Hell, any time that the head of NBC Hockey, a noted lover of Sidney Crosby, stands up for you against the call, that’s a sign that the refs made a bad call.

Ken Cuccinelli a Birther?

Get out your straitjackets and butterfly nets, it’s time for a trip down to Richmond. In an interview over the weekend, Cuccinelli said that a challenge to President Obama’s birth certificate was “within the realm of possibility” for legal action, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’s batshit crazy.

Look, it’s perfectly acceptable to not like the President, I certainly don’t think he walks on water, or is capable of delivering on the massive campaign promises he made to the American public, but isn’t the proper opposition answer to that pointing out his inability to get things done, and not challenge where he was born? Seriously? Really? That’s a viable political strategy? And you’re a state-wide office holder in Virginia? Whew. That’s some crazy-talk right there.

Metro can’t catch a break. Yesterday, the Examiner revealed, a Red line train operator ran a red signal in the Brentwood yard, causing a car to derail and damage the tracks and the third rail in that segment of the yard. No damage estimates were available, and it’s not clear why the operator ran the red signal.

C’mon guys, this just isn’t fun anymore.

It’s great to see the DC restaurant community get the respect it so richly deserves from the folks at Bravo.

DCPS Lottery Applications Skyrocket

Every year, DCPS holds an out-of-boundary lottery to allow families to apply to move from their neighborhood school to another nearby school in the District. This year, over 5,000 families applied for the lottery, and more than 3,300 were able to be placed at schools of their choosing. Chancellor Michelle Rhee expressed some happiness at the increase, saying, “a number of schools have gone from under-enrolled to flourishing,” during the past few years. In addition 14 schools now have waitlists for the first time in recent memory.

Here’s hoping they can continue to boost enrollment, which will increase funding for the District, as well as, hopefully, allow for the recruitment of better teachers, allow for more professional development of staff, and increase test scores and learning in the District’s public school system.

Washington Post Ombudsman Defends Front Page Photo of Kissing Couple

This photo, taken by Bill O’leary, ran on the front page of the Washington Post on May 4 and with this article. It sparked a number of letters to the WaPo ombudsman as well as subscription cancellations.

It has been a very exciting week for same-sex couples in the District, and the Washington Post wanted to make sure to capture the joy that city residents were sharing around the date that licenses for same-sex marriages would be accepted. As part of news coverage of that, the Post ran the above photo of Jeremy Ames and Taka Ariga kissing outside D.C. Superior Court on the front page of one of last week’s print editions.

Yesterday, Ombudsman Andrew Alexander shared some unfortunate news on his blog: a few readers were offended by the intimacy of two men reveling in the moment. He included several quotes from this feedback that don’t necessarily agree with the joy of the moment, and he noted that nearly 30 subscribers cited the photo as a reason to cancel subscriptions. Kudos to Alexander, though, for handling it incredibly well with his classy response:

Did the Post go too far? Of course not. The photo deserved to be in newspaper and on its Web site, and it warranted front-page display.

News photos capture reality. And the prominent display reflects the historic significance of what was occurring. The recent D.C. Council decision to approve same-sex marriage was the culmination of a decades-long gay rights fight for equality. Same-sex marriage is now legal in the District. The photo of Ames and Ariga kissing simply showed joy that would be exhibited by any couple planning to wed – especially a couple who previously had been denied the legal right to marry.

There was a time, after court-ordered integration, when readers complained about front-page photos of blacks mixing with whites. Today, photo images of same-sex couples capture the same reality of societal change.

Women Airforce Service Pilots To Receive Congressional Gold Medal

Today at 11am, the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) will get their much deserved recognition when they receive the Congressional Gold Medal, 68 years after their honorable and noble service to this country during WWII.

Faced with a shortage of U.S. based pilots in 1942, the Air Force recruited 1100 civilian female pilots and had them fly military aircraft across the country, test newly developed aircraft (including the B-29 Superfortress bomber that dropped the first atomic bomb on Japan) and tow targets for ground and air target practice.

Despite serving their country for two years and losing 38 WASPs  in the line of duty, the WASPs were not granted military status until 1977.

Yesterday, WASP survivors and family members gathered for a Remembrance Ceremony at the U.S. Air Force Memorial and a Salute Reception at the Women’s Memorial. Fewer than 300 WASPs are alive to receive the commendation and experience this truly historic event in U.S. women’s history.

Serendipity 3, that most New York of institutions, is opening a location in DC.  K Street Kate reports that the popular restaurant chain will be taking up in Nathan’s old location on Wisconsin and M in Georgetown.  Prime real estate, to say the least.  If you’re not familiar with Serendipity, it’s an ice cream shop of sorts that is famous for its huge (I’m talking punch bowl size) portions.  They’re particularly well known for their frozen hot chocolate, which is really something that you’ll just need to try.  And yes, it is in that movie Serendipity.  The developers are hoping to have the restaurant open by the end of spring.  I’d wager that it’ll be an instant hot spot.

Panda Updates: Nothing New at Home, but Butterstick is Happy

It’s too easy to be overly-clever while writing stories related to panda pregnancies (what, you couldn’t have gone opened with “one bamboo stick or two?” Come on!). Regardless of pregnancy test ledes, NBC Washington is reporting that this edition of “Mei Xiang Pregnancy Watch” is…still going on. According to the report, scientists at the National Zoo are not confirming if it’s a “no” or a “yes,” for the aging bear, so it looks the watch will continue for now.

We’ve already had to say farewell to our beloved Tai Shan in the early part of this year, and with the 10-year-loan on Mei Xiang and Tian-Tian soon to run out and the pandas sent back to China, this may be the last chance for a new cub here in the District. At least it sounds like Butterstick is enjoying his first time free from quarantine after returning to the home land.

The suspense is brutal back here at home, though so keep your fingers crossed that a new cub could be on the way.
