Talk About Selling Out

A member of the 2007 Georgetown Men’s basketball team just sold his Final Four ring on Ebay.

Vox Populi mentions that the Ebay listing guarantees the ring is 100% authentic, made of solid 10-carat gold, and all for the low-low price of … $1,450.

The owner of the ring has chosen to remain anonymous, but for how long? Once that piece of flashy jewelry is received on the buyer’s end, all anonymity will cease since the authenticity guarantee also ensures that the player’s name and uniform number appear on the ring itself.

Hat tip to Vox Populi for the story and Casual Hoya for originally posting about the ring sale earlier last week.

Voice of the Hill Ceases Publication

Last night, the word came first via tweet, and then via story: Voice of the Hill has stopped operation.  A community paper that began its life as a website, the print monthly cited rising costs and declining revenue.  The paper lost their founder, Bruce Robey, just a few months ago to a heart attack.  Losing the Voice is particularly difficult in a town whose paper of record is a national news organization and not a more local body.

The Post’s Marc Fisher penned an obituary for the paper, and our friends at The Hill Is Home and DCist have noted their departure. This is a big gap in the world of the hyperlocal, and we hope that there will rise from its ashes, as we’ve seen elsewhere, a dedicated publication to match its departure.

Godspeed, Voice.

PG County Funeral Home Shuttered After 40 Bodies Found

Maryland authorities revoked the license of a Riverdale funeral home when, during a surprise inspection, they found 40 bodies in bags stacked in their garage. The remains were in poor repair with their identification tags damaged, or in some cases, absent.  Chambers Funeral Home has a contract with Georgetown University to remove and cremate the remains after cadaver dissection by medical students, and there’s a decent chance that’s where the bodies came from, instead of representing bodies of clients awaiting burial.

Even so, this is pretty creepy and awful.

Nats Top Braves 6-3

Photo special to We Love DC by Ian Koski, Nationals Daily News

The Nationals weren’t content with their 3-3 jaunt through Florida and Chicago, said Jim Riggleman after tonight’s contest. It showed in their performance tonight against the struggling Braves. But, as with many things the Nationals do, it was subject to some initial difficulties. Livan Hernandez, on the mound defending his NL-leading ERA, had a rough first inning, throwing 41 pitches and giving up an unearned run. He did, however, pull it together and throw 5 1/3 innings of 2-run ball, and hung on through 123 pitches to pick up his fourth win.

DC Council: Boycott Arizona

courtesy of ‘Chris Rief aka Spodie Odie’

A recently-passed Arizona Law has the City Council seeking to pass a citywide official boycott on the state of Arizona, forcing city pension funds and retirement funds to divest their holdings of Arizona companies, and restricting official travel from the State in response to their state criminalization of illegal immigration.

The council was quite adamant in opposition to the law, despite significant national support for the law. In addition to the formal boycott measures, which require further discussion and votes, the council unanimously presented a bill that would require that MPD not transmit arrest data to Immigration & Customs Enforcement.

Fat Tire Comes to DC

I’ve heard rumors that New Belgium was going to start shipping their famous Fat Tire beer out East, and it seems those rumors are true. The GOG reports that the Black Squirrel in Adams Morgan snagged some bottles of the famous ale, along with a few other varieties from New Belgium. Up till now, North Carolina was about the closest place you could get Fat Tire and I’ve heard of many a beer aficionado making a point to grab a few cases when they were down that way.  Me, I’ve never had it, so I’m heading to the Black Squirrel tonight to try some, as I hear quantities are limited.

Teacher Appreciation Week: Hooray Teachers!

As part of Teacher Appreciation Week and tomorrow’s Teacher Appreciation Day, the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) is offering a variety ways to honor and recognize our local teachers for the lasting contributions they’ve made and continue to make in our lives.

Chancellor Michelle Rhee wrote a personal letter and created the above video highlighting the efforts made by DC teachers during the last year and encouraging the public to extend their own personal thank yous to teachers.

Visit the DCPS site to read outstanding district teachers profiles, publicly thank your own DCPS teacher, or generate your own special 140 character DCPS teacher message and tweet it to @dcpublicschools.

All of the above are fantastic ways to participate in this worldwide teacher celebration week and they only require a few moments of time to show our appreciation to teachers for all the effort they put in each day to teach and for the education that we and our youth receive thanks to them.

Big Trouble for Schools Contract

‘Harrington Signing Contract’
courtesy of ‘Cushing Memorial Library and Archives, Texas A&M’

There are some days that it has to suck to be Michelle Rhee. You’re busting your ass to line up methods to pay for the raises that you want to give to the good men and women working in the classroom in DC School, including doing some outside-the-box thinking to add non-profit stakeholders to the mix and then the DC CFO, who should be providing feedback all throughout the process, comes in and shits all over your parade, saying that the contract can’t stand.

That’s got to be a frustration that can barely be understood. Why wasn’t the CFO, or the CFO’s office inside the School District, cognizant of the problems that this new contract, and the methods for funding it, speaking up before the contract agreement was handled? Is this a place where Michelle Rhee got a little mavericky and didn’t do the due diligence? I don’t think that’s outside my impressions of her leadership style; this is the same chancellor who has said some pretty brash things in her tenure. Or is this a problem inside the DCPS-CFO relationship? The fight over whether or not there’s a surplus or deficit seems like something that would indicate that DCPS’ books don’t match up with the CFO’s books.

Regardless, this means that the contract cannot go in for approval to rank and file teachers, which is another setback for WTU’s George Parker’s tenure as president of the union, and as he faces an election before the end of next month, it’s going to be a priority for him to get the contract done before he can face his membership.

Two Green Therapy employees were charged with giving massages without a permit and, more seriously, a third employee was charged with willfully touching or fondling a sexual part of a person. Law enforcement additionally charged 5 male customers for frequenting a bawdy place.

Porter’s: Closed? …or Closing?

0429101246-00

Fellow We Love DC author Dave Levy heard word that Porter’s in Dupont (located at 1207 19th Street) was being shut down so I ran outside my office to sneak and peak.

That’s when I ran into the movers. All outdoor and indoor furniture was being manhandled into a moving truck upon my arrival just 10 minutes ago.

We are currently awaiting confirmation from a source providing additional information that the moving truck is related to the bar’s final days at its Dupont location.

Look for more on this story as it becomes available.

Porter's: "Closed for the time being."

Update, 3:33 pm: Porter’s is officially closed for the time being. Ownership respectfully declined further comment. However, Porter’s does hope to re-open in the future. (Photo above taken at 3:27 pm via mobile phone.)

Update, 2:57 pm: Three phone calls made to Porter’s within the last hour were not answered. All calls received a busy signal.

Giant Duct Crashes Down on Cafe Owner’s Cars in Dupont

0428101222-00

If you work in Dupont Circle near 18th and Connecticut odds are you heard a loud thud not too long ago. My co-workers and I looked out our window to see that a giant duct fell off the side of a building on the corner of N St NW and Connecticut so yous truly went to investigate.

It appears a duct vent connected to the 1800 Cafe located on N St came crashing down this afternoon and totaled 1800 Cafe owner Mike Choi’s car. The duct also crushed the glass of his father’s windshield. Both cars were located in their usual parking spaces in the alley behind the cafe.

No one was hurt.

Sad Panda: Mei Xiang Not Pregnant

Sadly, the news from the National Zoo this morning is that Mei Xiang was not pregnant with a new younger sibling to now-absent Tai Shan. The Panda pregnancy process is fairly opaque, even with trained veterinarians involved, and pseudo-pregnancies are the norm with these creatures. There will be no Butterstick II: Electric Bugaloo, for which we are all quite sad. Bad pandas are cute as buttons. Adult pandas? Meh.

The Panda enclosure opens again this morning, if you wanted to let Mei Xiang and Tian Tian know your feelings on the matter.

Stupid welfare pandas.

Equipment Derailment to Slow Your Commute

Metro has implemented speed restrictions on part of the Yellow and Blue lines following the derailment of a piece of maintenance equipment. If your commute takes you between National Airport and Crystal City, you will notice a slower train speeds.

A speed swing vehicle derailed while returning to the Alexandria rail yard after overnight work, causing minor damage to the tracks. The damage was repaired, but the vehicle derailed a second time and was parked on a pocket track until it can be examined.

Metro has not said how long the speed restrictions will be in effect.UPDATE: Metro tells us that the 15 mph speed restriction will be in place all day.

UPDATE: Metro is also reporting delays of up to 20 minutes on the Green line due to a cracked rail at Naylor Road Station. Trains are single tracking between Naylor Road and Southern Avenue.

Smallest House in DC for Rent

Do you ever feel like your pad is just a bit too large? Maybe you’re the type that doesn’t really like a space of their own.  Well, you’re in luck because DC’s smallest (unofficially) house is currently on the market.  For just over $1000/mo, you can enjoy all that this Capitol Hill home’s 252 square feet has to offer. The house is comes complete with a kitchenette, bathroom and backyard that’s actually larger than the interior. Frankly, though, it looks a little silly in between the neighboring normal sized houses, but I suppose that’s part of the charm.  So, if you’re the type of person searching for a unique little (emphasis on little) home, DC has the answer.  Isn’t there a tiny house in Georgetown, too?  I wonder which is smaller.

Departures & Arrivals at City Paper

Some big news in little china for the City Paper in the last twenty-four hours. First, as of this morning, they’re under new management. New editor Michael Schaffer has taken the helm of the Wemple-less weekly after stints with the Philadelphia Inquirer and U.S. News and World Report. Before that, he was a City Paper writer and senior editor, so this marks a homecoming for Schaffer. His first job is the second piece of news: Mike “Loose Lips” DeBonis is headed for the Washington Post, according to Bruce DuPuyt of Channel 8 News. DeBonis will write his last column for the City Paper on May 10th before starting at the Washington Post on May 15th.

Details of DeBonis’ deal are not yet clear, so it’s not apparent whether he’ll be doing the same style daily reporting for WaPo, or if he’ll be covering a more traditional desk job at the Post. Here’s hoping they give Loose Lips a blank work order and let him figure out what’s best to do.

DC To Get A Waffle House, Courtesy of Fred Smoot?

Former Redskins cornerback, Fred Smoot, loves DC. Despite his current free agent status, the footballer hearts our city and has developed a deep connection to the fans and DCers, he’s met during his tenure on the Deadskins’ roster.

Although his player status for the 2010 season is still very much up in the air, Smoot told Kevin and Rock on 106.7’s The Fan that no matter what he plans to keep his connections to the area by opening up D.C.’s first ever Waffle House. During the weekly radio show, Smoot stated, “I’m actually in the process of starting a couple businesses up here. I’m bringing Waffle House to D.C. — I think they’ve been yearning for it for a long time. My first location is right off 14th and U.”

Of course, Smoot’s plan will not only bring the deliciousness of tasty waffles to the area and meet the heavy demand for the breakfast item, but will also revive the long lived syrup vs. gravy debate that this September saw syrup take the prize. Perhaps it’s time for a rematch?
