UPDATE (May 21, 2010 8:50am): According to MPD’s Matthew Klein, an arrest has been made in connection to these armed robberies.  The MPD is now actively reviewing all cases and determining which robberies the suspect, arrested last night, is connected to. The suspect is currently being held without bail.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is warning Northwest DC residents about an ATM machine robber working in their neighborhoods. The suspect’s (pictured above) most recent robbery occurred the DC’s First District on the 600 block of Massachusetts Avenue, NW. MPD believes this suspect is responsible for other similar robberies in the Second District.

The suspect’s MO is to approach individuals withdrawing money from ATM machines, and force them to withdraw additional funds while threatening to harm them. Several of the victims have stated that the suspect is armed with a knife.

As always, use caution when using ATMs and be aware of your surroundings. Should you see anyone matching this description, or if you observe anyone acting suspiciously, call 911 immediately.

Goodbye Chlorine, Hello Chloramine!

If your water at home tastes a bit better tonight, you have the annual switch back to chloramine from chlorine will bring less flavor to your tap. The chlorine treatment is an annual thing, and for ten weeks, DC WASA uses chlorine to do cleaning of the mains, and then switch back to chloramine which has fewer byproducts. It may take up to a week for the change to be completed throughout the area, and those water-imbibers who have special needs should be aware of the change. You can also go to this website for your plumbing needs and they can help you with your water treatment.

You, dear reader, are keyed in to all the social networks, on your bliggety-blogs, and your faceyspaces, and your tweetie pages, and that’s why you probably know at least one candidate for higher office with their own Twitter or Facebook page. Or do you? Perhaps that account you’re following is just a knockoff candidate. The Maryland Board of Elections is here to help save you. They want to require that candidates engaging in social media certify their social media accounts by including the Authority Line.

Keeping Track of the Taxes

Keeping track of all the different taxation proposals currently in front of the council, as they figure out the budget for next year, is not a job I’d want to have. Fortunately, Michael Neibauer of the Washington Business Journal is doing that for you. He’s got a summary of the different committee proposals for alteration of Mayor Fenty’s budget. According to Neibauer, the budget remains largely intact with spending at $5.2B.

Mayor Fenty Shunting Bag Tax Money to Streetsweeping?

Is Mayor Fenty looking to go back on his word, regarding the bag tax? If you may recall, the 5-cent plastic bag tax was supposed to fund cleanup efforts on the Anacostia Waterfront, and only that. However, according to the Tax Foundation, Mayor Fenty wants to use that money for street-sweeping budgets, instead of the general fund.

C’mon now, Mr. Mayor, I’m pretty sure that’s not what you said the tax was for. I know that times are tight, budgetarily, but this is just silly.

Lead by approximately three dozen local restaurants, a new coalition against the Soda Tax has emerged in the wake of Mary Cheh’s proposal to the City Council. Members include Magruder’s, Au Bon Pain, Corner Bakery, Pizza Boli’s and pretty much every corner market in the city, as well as an unexpected member: United Medical Center. The tax would add a penny per ounce to every soda purchased, from single bottles, to multipacks.

DDOT’s experiment with the Barnes Dance in Chinatown kicked off today at the intersection of 7th and H streets NW at 10 this morning.

Almost 27,000 pedestrians and 26,000 vehicles use the proposed intersection on an average day, making it a prime location for such a test.

A few details pertaining to this particular variation on the Barnes Dance include: allowing pedestrians  to cross with traffic that has a green signal and prohibit all turns by all vehicles at that intersection to increase pedestrian safety and maintain a steady flow traffic.

Drivers: If you intend to turn left or right off of 7th Street NW or H Street NW, DDOT requests you use an intersection before or after the Barnes Dance Intersection.

Anyone get any fun photos of today’s inaugural Barnes Dance in Chinatown? If so, let us know in the comments!

What’s with people driving their cars into things this week? First we had the I-395 Tunnel incident off New York Ave, then we had a UPS driver plow into the Hirshorn Museum, and now we’ve got a car crashing into Courthouse nightspot Rhodeside Grill in broad daylight during an accident.

C’mon now people, cars are for driving, not careening into things with, okay? Seriously, people, this is getting silly.

Pop Warner Team’s Offices, Possessions Ransacked

How depraved do you have to be to go into the offices of a Pop Warner Football team, steal all the uniforms, wreck their trophy case and spray paint the trophies, steal the uniforms, and then destroy their van?  That’s what happened to the Benning Terrace Soldiers’ youth football program over the weekend. Their offices ransacked, their uniforms stolen, their gear taken, and their TV painted over.

We’ve asked Department of Parks & Rec how we can help with the cleanup or with replacing their uniforms, when we know, we’ll share that information.  This is a pretty awful situation, with no clear motive and no clear suspects.  How much of a toolshed and a coward do you have to be to pick on a kids football team?

DC in Bond Rating Trouble?

The Times has a piece this morning that has some concerning numbers about city spending and the state of the reserve fund. Once at $1.5B, the fund could be drawn down as low as $600M by the end of 2012, with no immediate plans to help avoid further draws on the fund. While this may sound just like rainy day spending, Wall Street, which sets the District’s credit ratings, may not be so fond of a city that’s just spending away its reserve with no plan to replenish. Currently, the District maintains a very good rating (A+, A1, A+) but should the city continue to spend down its reserve, that may not continue, costing the city in higher debt service costs.

So, in times of economic difficulty, how do you cope with a declining reserve? There are a couple options that are before the Council now: raising taxes (there’s a proposed income tax increase on all residents earning more than $200,000), cutting spending (which some coalitions argue has been cut too far in social services already) or both. It’s not a pretty picture, but it is a time for the mayoral candidates to better explain their positions.

Big Truck Tries to Increase Height Limit on 3rd Street Tunnel

There’s a big sign on New York Avenue at the 3rd Street Tunnel. It reads, if memory serves, “Trucks over 13 feet must use 4th Street” instead of the tunnel. Today, a driver ignored that sign and crashed into the southbound entrance into the tunnel and caused a bit of damage. Southbound entry to 395 is being redirected to the Mass Ave entrance for the time being, while engineers figure out how bad the damage is, and clean up the rubble.

That’s a Nice Screen, Be a Shame if Anything Happened To It…

There’s a reason that community activism is done best by communities instead of organizations. It feels right to work together for a common cause to demonstrate solidarity of opinion and effort, instead of just being hit up for money. That’s exactly what the save the screen on the green guys did this morning. Instead of providing me with the tools to contact HBO and request that they keep up this valuable community feature, or asking my help in identifying sponsors to help defray event costs, they came straight for my wallet this morning:

HBO hasn’t yet decided whether or not they’ll host “Screen on the Green” this year, so we’re back in action. Fans like you have already helped, “liking” us on Facebook and tweeting about our cause.

But we need your support. We need $2,000 to upgrade our website and prepare it for our next letter writing campaign.

Will you chip in $20 to help build our website and save “Screen on the Green”?

Look, I love Screen on the Green, too, and we were one of the first sites to break the news last year when HBO pulled the plug, but what I want was community outreach, not a hand in my wallet so you can build a website. I want this to be an event that returns year after year, too, but that isn’t built off solicitations and exhortations without giving me the opportunity to help you with my labor and efforts.

So really, bite me.

A body thought to be Alonte Sutton, 18, was found in a ravine in Southeast DC over the weekend. Sutton had been serving as an intern for Councilman Michael A. Brown, who Sunday expressed sadness over Sutton’s death in some touching comments given to the Post. Sutton’s death appears related to an argument had between Sutton and an unnamed assailant who wanted Sutton to transport his girlfriend. The assailant left the scene and returned with a firearm to address the argument. The story is deeply sad. Our condolences to Sutton’s family on their loss.

In front of a Saturday afternoon crowd of 21,633, the Nationals and Matt Chico held on to the team’s winning record.  The Nats, now 16-14, remain a game behind their 2005 selves for best start in team history, but it’s all about momentum for this club.  After the game, manager Jim Riggleman said that, “Sometimes you get a little lucky,” and it was luck today that prevailed for the Nationals.

Bags of romaine lettuce sold under the Freshway Foods, Freshway and Imperial Sysco brands are being recalled because of  a possible link to the E. coli outbreak.

According to the Washington Times, “The recalled lettuce has a “best if used by” date of May 12 or earlier. The recall also affects “grab and go” salads sold at Kroger, Giant Eagle, Ingles Markets and Marsh grocery stores.”

The lettuce was sold in DC and 23 other states and is thought to be responsible for 22 cases of E. coli in New York, Michigan and Ohio.

Services Taxes to Expand to Include Gyms, Spas and Instruction?

‘$196,876,282.12’
courtesy of ‘M.V. Jantzen’

Thanks much to tipster Jennifer who reminded us that today’s the day: the City Council is taking up expanding the service tax to raise revenue.  Included in what you might start paying new taxes on are personal instruction, massage services, magazines, house cleaning, gym membership fees, carpet cleaning and cultural event ticket costs.  Chances are, if you do business with someone in a one-on-one sort of way, the city wants a cut of the transaction, and that extends from personal trainers, to maid service, to pet grooming.

I know times are tough in the budget arena, but the answer during a recession, or the early rebound from one, is not to increase the load on area small businesses.  While the list of services at the Post’s blog doesn’t include my own area of IT Consulting, it’s a short leap from the current list to an expanded list.  If you operate a personal services business, or side gig, this might affect what you do, if you’re a dogwalker, or masseuse, or work at a gym, chances are you’re going to be responsible for tax collection and disbursement, adding a whole other line item to your administrative routine and complicating what it takes to do business.

If you don’t want your gym bill to go up, or any of the other personal services you purchase to go up, email your city council rep.  Don’t know who that is? Find out with your address.  Over 2,000 people had emailed Mary Cheh as of yesterday, and more than that had hit Jim Graham.

There’s really no “good” way to raise taxes, but focusing on small local businesses after you’ve driven the big ones to the burbs? That’s just insult to injury, DC Council.

Metro Reports Incident Involving Emergency Brake

‘8099 mushroom’

Last summer’s horrific crash near Fort Totten revealed a colloquial term for the emergency brake aboard all trains: the Mushroom. Named for its shape, the Mushroom engages the emergency brakes and brings the train to an immediate halt. Yesterday, Metro reported an incident involving the emergency brakes being engaged on a Red Line train at Forest Glen as it approached the Station. No one was injured, but it’s concerning to hear that so long after last summer’s crash, that perhaps the system’s train indication still isn’t working.

This was one of our questions for interim GM Sarles at the blogger roundtable that was supposed to happen late yesterday. We were told that GM Sarles had a meeting late in the day with Congress and that was why our meeting was delayed, but the timing here could be considered suspect. The questions remain: What state are the train detection circuits in on the Red Line? It certainly is not promising to hear that the emergency brake was deployed here in light of what we’ve been promised.

We’re hoping that the roundtable will be rescheduled for early next week, and we can find out ourselves.

Late yesterday, WMATA fired a Metrobus driver who was involved in an accident in Southeast for failure to follow standard procedure. The April 13th incident involved a W2 at Irving & Alabama SE striking a pedestrian whose condition is currently unknown. Metro has taken months in the past to handle this sort of discipline, so it’s relieving to see that they’re taking this more seriously in the wake of last summer’s safety crackdown.

McDonnell Orders Magical Cameras

Get off 66 at the DTR, and you have two choices: go directly to the Airport and pay nothing, or take the road with exits, and pay as you go. Apparently, though, there are enough people who are driving out to the airport and thence hitting the private roads. Gov. McDonnell has signed a bill to act to prevent this, which is great, the main airport road is for airport business, and I get this. The problem, though, is that they want to automate this process.

Yes, they want to put a camera out there to do photosurveillance and detection of who is and who is not on Airport business. I’m not exactly sure how that would work, and none of the initial reports seem to indicate how this machine would hand out its $600 tickets to the masses. How the heck would this work?
