If the proposed changes to the WMATA fare structure take effect as planned, how much more are you looking at in daily fees to ride the rails on our aging transport system? The Post’s Kat Downs and Jacqueline Kazil have built a calculator to help you figure it out.  I ran a few of my favorite routes through the calculator, and here’s what I found:

Van Dorn Street to Farragut West (my first commute)
Options: Peak of the Peak, Parking, 10 trips/wk
Per Week Increase: $12.50
Per Year Increase: $650.00
Per Week Parking Increase: $2.50
Per Year Parking Increase: $130.00

Total Yearly Increase: $780.00

It’s the last Tuesday of the month. What does that mean? Usually nothing. But today, that changes.

As a whiskey (and scotch … and bourbon) fan, I must admit I’m ashamed I haven’t heard of this before now, but Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar hosts a free whiskey tasting on the last Tuesday of every month.

Tonight, George Concannon is scheduled to make a presentation about the history of Johnnie Walker and serve up samples of the Black, Green, Gold and Blue label luxuries in a bottle.

The tasting starts at 7:30. Little Miss Whiskey’s is located at 1104 H Street NE.

Violent Crime in DC Down Significantly in 2009

The FBI has released their annual summary of crime data for the nation, and the good news is: Violent and Non-violent crime in DC is down markedly over 2008 at a decrease of 7.2%.  2009 saw major decreases in the murder rate (down 30%!), the forcible rape rate (down 24%!) and car theft (down 17%!) and moderate decreases in overall violent crime (7%), robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and larceny-theft.  Arson was up slightly to a total of 55 in 2009 over 51 in 2008.

Much credit to MPD and Chief Cathy Lanier for their outreach and enforcement efforts to bring overall crime in the District down!

Looking at the regional data, DC decreased at faster than the regional average of 6.6%, and may have accounted for some of the drop in the murder rate for the Southern Region, and a portion of the drop in forcible rape for the region. Better still DC is now out of the top ten cities for the per capita murder rate, dropping down to #14. Things are looking up!

Stephen Strasburg hasn’t been called up to the majors yet and somehow he has one of  hottest selling baseball card’s via Ebay Auction at the moment. The card in question is one of kind, according to Sports by Brooks, making it special among the hordes of Strasburg memorabilia … should he proceed to have the career he is said to have one day.

The initial asking price for the Bowman Chrome Superfractor Stephen Strasburg baseball card was set at $20,000 or best offer. Now, it’s way past that point. A total of 31 offers were turned down and the card was later relisted as a reserve-auction.

And all of this for a young man who hasn’t even pitched one at-bat in major league play.

Senior Vice President and Marketing Manager of CBS Radio Washington Sam Rogers, better known in this case as the former general manager of WHFS admitted a little something to The Washington City Paper recently:

“Nobody wants to admit they’re old and classic.”

In vain of that, it is necessary to announce that tickets for the area’s famed HFStival go on sale this Friday and the line-up is full of a few alt-rock classics in their own right.

Acts on the main stage include 90’s classics like: Third Eye Blind, Billy Idol, Everclear, Ed Kowalczyk from Live, Presidents Of the United States of America, Fuel, Lit, and Marcy Playground.

Ticket prices aren’t out of line and are moderately priced at $25-$40.

Of course, there will also be a local stage featuring the best the DMV has to offer.

HFStival will take place on September 18 at Merriweather Post Pavillion.

I mean come on! A chance to hear Marcy Playground sing “Sex and Candy” is one you really don’t want to miss.

Two local hotties made Redbook’s “America’s Hottest Husbands” contest finals, but unfortunately did not secure the top honor. Michael Kennedy of Frederick, MD and John McGaha of New Market, MD were selected to the 20 finalists and although they didn’t win the coveted title, they did make the top 5 runners up.

More than 15,000 people voted in the online contest with Ray Sorensen of Greenfield, Iowa winning the title of “America’s Hottest Husband.”

I’m not gonna lie, I definitely spent some time ogling the finalists this AM. Personally speaking, McGaha’s picture is smoking. He’s my winner. I know hands off, hands off.

Miss DC 2009 Defends Herself At Georgetown Bar

Miss DC 2009 had quite the weekend here in the town that issued her the crown. First, a Saturday stint at Nationals Park to sing the National Anthem at the Battle of the Beltways series and then … things got a little less fun.

Jennifer Corey sent a line to The Washington Examiner early Sunday to explain the happenings of her Saturday night fiasco at a Georgetown bar involving her slamming a guy copping a feel up against the wall.

She told the Examiner that she was spanked by some “spoiled rich preppy kids who think that they are better than you because their dad makes a lot of money.” According to Corey, she was pushed or slapped three times by thee different men in Georgetown bars between Friday and Saturday night, hence her reaction of slamming guy number three up against the wall for protection.

“I just had so much rage against him … that I slammed him up against the wall,” Corey told the Examiner.

Rightfully so. No woman, whether they’re a pageant winner or not, should have to take being accosted by anyone without protecting themselves.

Cheesecake Factory Servers Arrested for Credit Card Fraud

‘Cheesecake Factory…yum!’
courtesy of ‘dave~’

Have you eaten at the Cheesecake Factory in Friendship Heights lately? No? Good. Turns out, there was a credit card fraud ring operating with the help of the servers from Cheesecake Factory, to the tune of $117,000+ worth of false charges. The wait staff would use credit card skimmers to sluice off your credit card info for the low, low reward of $25-40 per card.

While this happens to local restaurants as well (famously, it happened at 701 last year) it seems to be something that happens mainly in the big chains, either due to depressed server salaries and tips, or because the organizations themselves don’t do much to engender staff loyalty to patrons. Just something to consider when you’re weighing your dining choices.

We regret the confusion, and have updated the story to put the Cheesecake Factory whence it belongs in Friendship Heights. Fail on our end.

With four council members speaking out against the Soda Tax yesterday, it appears the bill is all but done for in the general hearings, but chairman Vincent Gray has asked for council staff to look into other methods for raising the $6M necessary to fund the health food program for DC Schools, which may include extending the 6% sales tax to soda purchases of all flavors, not just the sugary kind.

As quickly as there was joy at the National Zoo over the birth of a new
lion cub, there is sadness, too.  The small cub died after catching pneumonia, having gotten some of the tips of the straw bedding in his lungs.  Dennis Kelly, director of the National Zoo said “I believe this was a one-in-a-million fluke. Unfortunately, this is the downside to the ‘cycle of life.’ But, the animal care team and Zoo staff are consummate professionals, and I know they’ve learned a tremendous amount from creating the pride, breeding the lions and getting Nababiep through her first birth. We mourn this loss yet keep our focus on the best care for the lion pride”

We extend our condolences to the lion pride at the Zoo and to their keepers.

Stolen Segway On The Loose

Coming out of today’s Ward 2 Watch Commander’s Crime Update, it appears we’ve got a hot Segway on the loose in the streets of DC.  The report states that the victim was “watching a basketball game, left their Segway unsecured in the rear of the location during which time an unknown suspect(s) stole it.” The theft occurred late Wednesday night along the 2000 blk. of G St., N.W.

Really guy? You left your Segway out back with the keys in the ignition? Dumbass. But as much as I despise people cruising the streets on these horrid vehicles–just walk for f*#k’s sake you lazy piece of poop!–I despise thievery even more. So for those .0003 of you who have a Segway, be sure to lock. it. up.

DC Schools Make Advances, Still Far Behind

‘Bill Gates talks “free education”‘

While DC Students are still scoring below the national average at the 4th and 8th grade levels, they are making gains, according to data released today by the National Assessment of Education Progress.  The data shows that DCPS students were the only participating urban district that experienced any growth at both grade levels from 2007 to 2009.  The Assessment was administered in 18 of the country’s largest urban school districts, and DCPS 4th graders picked up 6 scale points in reading, compared to a flat national average; DCPS 8th graders picked up 4 scale points in reading, compared to a flat national average.

DCPS cites their reform efforts in the classroom as leading directly to the success.  Michelle Rhee said, “While we still have a long way to go, we are encouraged by the strides we’ve made with focusing on instruction, and the dedication of our teachers, school leaders, parents and students providing them with an student and teacher diary planner to each one at the beginning of the course.”

Since 2002, DCPS fourth graders have added 13 scale points to their scores, growth eclipsed only by Atlanta in the same time period.  DCPS still tests below the urban average overall, and specifically in group of students eligible for school lunch programs.  Troubling, though, is the report’s demonstration that more than half of the city’s fourth and eighth graders are at below basic reading comprehension, and the scale point gap between the district’s white students and black students.  Less than 15 percent of the students in eighth grade are testing at proficient levels of reading or better, which is deeply troubling.  Literacy and writing are two of the most critical skills for students to develop, and with more than half unable to do so at a basic level, it’s clearly a failing inside the system that needs to be remedied.

Move That Hybrid Electric Vehicle!!!

‘ups’
courtesy of ‘loop_oh’

United Parcel Service (UPS) is expanding its alternative fuel fleet and deploying 17 new next-generation hybrid electric delivery trucks in the metro DC area.  These vehicles are part of a 200 alternative fuel vehicle expansion taking place in DC, Austin, Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Long Island, Minneapolis and Louisville.

Whenever you acquire a solar PV system or an electric vehiclethe seller may provide you with an option to install a charging point in your residence as well. For electric vehicle owners, it’s possible to charge the vehicle at your house through the use of a home charging point. While charging both types of electric vehicles is a straightforward process, EV charger installation, on the other hand, isn’t so simple. According to electricians near Williamsburg, the charging process only requires you to connect the vehicle to an electricity source using a cable.

According to UPS’ press release, the new fleet will ” reduce fuel consumption by roughly 176,000 gallons over the course of a year,” and will “reduce the amount of CO2 gases released annually into the atmosphere by 1,786 metric tonnes. ”

This UPS “green” fleet uses a multitude of alternative energy technologies, such as hydraulic hybrid technology, regenerative braking (when energy generated from applying the brakes is captured and returned to the battery as electricity,) compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, propane, electricity, etc. Learn more about electricity usage at Forbrukerguiden.no.

The new hybrid trucks, currently being deployed in DC, will look exactly the same as regular UPS trucks, except for the additional labeling identifying them as hybrid electrics. So keep your eyes peeled.

16th Street between S & R is currently shut down for police investigation of a second suspicious package there this morning. I’m not sure why you’d want to blow up the Masons, really, unless you’re deep into conspiracies…oh. I see. Well.

Buses are being stopped (including all of the S buses that run down 16th Street) around the area, and you should probably steer clear from there for now. From what I understand, buses were being offloaded and checked for suspicious packages by MPD in the area, as well.

Whole Foods Opens In Friendship Heights

Morning Coffee Bar by pquill

Starting today, the Whole Foods Market (WFM) at 4420 Willard Avenue NW opens its brand spanking new, gourmet delicacy-revealing doors to the public.  This latest addition to The Shops at Wisconsin Place and the Whole Foods Market chain is twice as large as the current shop on River Road and, as experienced in yesterday’s blogger preview, brings new and innovative offerings to the area and highlights local growers, products and farmers.

According to my tour guide Ellen James, Whole Foods defines the term “local” as any location within one day’s drive of the store. That means the truck needs to leave and return to the store within 24 hours. So we’re reasonably talking PA, MD, DC, VA, DE, and WV.  If you really pushed it, perhaps NC, NJ, NY, etc. but WF knows that’s pushing it.

Throughout the tour it was clear that deep thought and local area market research went in to the design of this facility and hot sauce store. Not only will you find the traditional WF staples (salad bar, global cuisine bar, olive bar, meat counter, cheese shop, fish monger, soup station, etc.) but some additions and features specific to our regional palates. Local Family Launches Global Campaign To Find Bone Marrow Donor For Their 4-Year-Old Son

Devan
Photo courtesy of Be a Match for Devan

As the daughter of a heart transplant recipient, I find it absolutely necessary to inform the general public about how important organ and tissue transplantation is in our community and to our families. Had my father not received a heart in 1999, he would have missed out on an entire decade of our family’s life and my own would have changed forever. Thanks to the generosity of strangers, my father received a heart and was there to raise my sister and I. He even got to move us both into college.

Now, a Washington family is running the risk of losing their 4-year-old son to acute promyelocytic leukemia if they do not find a bone marrow donor in the next 11 weeks.

Devan Tatlow’s chances of finding a match are one in 200,000, according to WTOP, because he is a mixed race child. His father is European and his mother is a combination of Polish and south Indian heritage.

His parents have launched a global Internet campaign to find a donor to save their sons life, allowing him to live beyond the age of 4. Bone marrow donation drives are being held worldwide in an attempt to save young Devan’s life, but there are also a few drives in the coming days right here in our area.

If you are interested in visiting the drive sites and donating, you are not alone. More than 100 people attended the Turtle Park drive over the weekend to have their cheeks swabbed and checked to see if they were a match.

“This is a campaign that will hopefully benefit him but will certainly benefit many, many thousands of people beyond him,” Devan’s mother Indira Lakshmanan told WTOP.

The Battle is Joined: Gray Picks Up AFL-CIO Endorsement

In any campaign, it’s not just what you say, or what you’ve accomplished, it’s who endorses you that makes a bit of difference.  In a deeply democratic town, the voice of organized labor can carry the weight of many, making yesterday’s endorsement of Chairman Gray by the Metropolitan Washington Council of AFL-CIO.

According to a release from the Gray campaign, the support was unanimous among the council, which represents 150,000 members. Gray said yesterday, “Working families are the life’s blood of our communities and our economy. That’s why we need a mayor who’s focused on creating jobs and opportunities, building a world-class education system, and keeping our streets safe.”

This is the first big endorsement for either campaign.
