Senator Webb Hates Tourbuses, Too

Anyone who’s driven Independence or Constitution in the summertime knows the tour-bus hatred. Or 15th Street. Or Virginia Ave. Or 17th Street. Or really anywhere near the tourist areas of DC. These bastards park their motorcoaches whereever they darned-well please, and it’s a real pain in the ass to get anywhere when they’re here. My favorite is 15th Street at 3:30pm, where you can sometimes have buses triple parked, blocking all southbound traffic. Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) feels your pain, and wrote a letter to Mayor Fenty to request a fix. Here’s his list of questions: Continue reading

Peculiar Robbery at Annapolis City Hall

If you’ve paid any bills lately to the City of Annapolis, you might want to call them to make sure your check wasn’t one of the $149,000+ worth of checks that were in a bank bag that was stolen on Monday. The bag contained checks that were stamped “for deposit only” and those will likely have to be stopped and reissued, which can cost some change to the sender. No word yet who will pick up that tab. The thief also got away with around $4,000 in cash.

Does The DC Democratic Party Straw Poll Mean Anything?

‘CPAC Straw Poll’

This past weekend, the DC Democratic Party held their convention at Howard University’s Law School, and as part of the festivities, the assembled citizens held a straw poll election of candidates for Mayor. The showing wasn’t good for Mayor Adrian Fenty, who was booed by those in attendance. They were all there to see Council Chairman Vincent Gray, who received just over seven hundred votes. Mayor Fenty could only come up with just under two hundred.

Is this straw poll a big deal? Probably not. If it had meant anything, I would imagine the Mayor would have rallied a comparable number of supporters to make it a close vote. In 2006, the straw poll voted strongly for Vincent Orange and Linda Cropp, with Fenty only gathering few votes, but he drew much more heavily at the primary election, where he won all the precincts.

This was an empty victory, largely geared toward the Democratic Party apparatus, and not the citizens as a whole. Keep an eye on the polls.

ESPNZone in DC to Close June 16th

Via Nats News Network comes the news that DC’s ESPNZone is closing on June 16th, which will cancel all future Washington Nationals player Q&A sessions that had been scheduled there. It’s not just DC’s ESPNZone that’s closing, it’s the whole chain, except for two locations in Southern California. Disney cited poor performance of the chain as the reason for its demise.

It’s tough to see an anchor tenant like ESPN decide to take their business elsewhere, but it does open up some prime restaurant space in the middle of the downtown core. Don’t expect that space to be dark for long.

It’s primary day in Virginia for a number of local and statewide offices, which means it’s your chance to go vote the bums in or out, depending on your preference. Polls opened at 6am and won’t close until 7pm tonight, so go out and get your franchise on. Not sure where exactly you’re voting? Plug in your address and go find out. There are a number of primaries today for the various congressional seats, so go grab a ballot and make democracy happen. Democracy only works if you take part, and besides, you can’t bitch if you didn’t vote, and God knows how we love bitching about politics in this country. Do your duty.

Two More Serious Injuries for D.C. United

The blows are coming today for D.C. United.  Two major players for DCU are spending a sizable amount of time out of commission, the team announced today.  Brandon Barklage, midfielder, had season-ending ACL Reconstruction surgery this afternoon, which also fixed a meniscus tear in the same knee.  Barklage spent the majority of last season on the disabled list with a similar injury.  Barklage will likely need six months or more to return to the pitch.

In addition, Rodney Wallace has been diagnosed with a fracture of the left fibula, an injury he sustained during Saturday’s match with Real Salt Lake.  Wallace’s diagnosis is a bit better than Barklage’s, with a return to the team suspected within six weeks.

We hope that both gentlemen recover quickly, and we look forward to seeing them in red and black before long.  Get Well Cards can be sent care of the franchise at:

Helen Thomas Departs White House Press Corps

With a career in the White House dating back to President Eisenhower Kennedy, Helen Thomas has been considered the grand old dame of the White House Press Corps for many years. After some remarks that came out Friday, though, she has announced her retirement this afternoon, effective immediately. While I’m not sure I can weigh in effectively on the content of her remarks, they have certainly generated a lot of left/right commentary in the last few days that made her in front of the story than behind the story.

Not ones to miss the opportunity for a good joke, the Washington DC JCC tweeted that Thomas was going on to serve as Mel Gibson’s publicist.

RAMMY Winners Announced

DC’s restaurant community gathered last night at the Marriott Wardman Park to celebrate their own in a black-tie 1940s-themed gala. The Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington awarded the coveted RAMMY prizes last night before an audience of 1,500.

Scott Drewno from The Source by Wolfgang Puck garnered the Chef of the Year award, while Falls Church’s 2941 claimed the Fine Dining Restaurant award. 2941‘s Anthony Chavez would claim the Pastry Chef of the year award. Nicolas Stefanelli from Bibiana took home the Rising Star Award. Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s Birch & Barley claimed the Best New Restaurant prize, while BLT Steak picked up the Power Spot name. Cork Wine Bar because DC’s new best Neighborhood Gathering Place, while Alexandria’s Vermillion captured the Upscale Casual restaurant award.

Surprising no one at all, the Birch & Barley/Churchkey claimed Hottest Restaurant Bar Scene, thanks in no small part to Greg Engert’s excellent taste. Proof picked up recognition for their excellent wine program, while PS7’s just a few blocks up received the same nod for their mixology program.

Adolfo Cajchon from Seasons claimed Restaurant Employee of the Year, and Mark Politzer claimed Restaurant Manager of the Year for his work at Bourbon Steak. CoCo. Sala was voted Favorite Restaurant through online and newspaper polling.

Most interesting in this year’s awards: No honors for anyone in Maryland, nor were there any Arlington restaurants that picked up a nod in this year’s awards. Long Live the District! (Okay, and Falls Church and Old Town, too.)

A Super Bowl in Washington? Hey, it could happen.

The first Super Bowl to be played outdoors in a cold-weather city is slated for 2014 in East Rutherford, N.J., which is an exception to the usual preference of choosing a warmer climate to play the game.

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder is pleased with this decision. In fact, he is so pleased with New York/New Jersey hosting the Super Bowl that he’s going to try and bring the NFL’s biggest game to DC.

The Washington Times reports that Snyder went on the record yesterday when he said he’s anticipating a “great experience” for the NFL at the Meadowlands in 2014. Why? He thinks it will generate positive feedback, providing more of a reason to host the big game in other cold winter temperature cities.

The Redskins tried to secure a spot to host the 2003 Super Bowl and were left with an unsuccessful bid.

“We’re ripe to get one,” Snyder told the Times. We’ll see.

We Love Music: The 9:30 Club 30th Anniversary Concert

Bob Mould performing at the 9:30 Club 30th Anniversary concert
“Bob Mould” photo taken by author.

“The reason this is the best club in America is the people that work here. Trust me, most nightclubs are terrible places. You don’t want to go there.” – Neill Fallon of Clutch.

“I can not imagine a DC without the 9:30 Club. It is unimaginable. It’s just unimaginable” – Mark Noone of The Slickee Boys.

“I love the fact that I’m from DC!” – Henry Rollins

“Let’s kick on the way back machine and get this thing over with.” – Bob Mould.

One of the truly singular music events I have ever attended took place on Monday night at the 9:30 Club. It was a special free concert held in celebration of this legendary club’s 30th anniversary. The night was also a celebration of the people who work (and have worked) there, the icons who got their start there, and the wonderful music that has been played there over the last 30 years. The night was full of anecdotes and music from 13 bands and artists that have strong ties to both the old and new 9:30 Club locations. For some the evening was a living, breathing, crash course in DC music history; for others it was a fun and at times even emotional trip down memory lane.

The 9:30 Club (original location) is the nightclub I cut my teeth on when I moved here in 1993. Within a few days of arriving I was catching my first show there (British twee-band Heavenly); and in the months and years after many, many more shows followed. I once took a date there to see The Boredoms and she left with a black-eye. My little brother did his first stage dive when I took him there to see Helmet. I was completely enthralled with industrial music after hearing Einstruzende Neubauten on the PA before the melodramatic, dynamite-strapped Sheep on Drugs brought the house down with their industrial-dance mayhem. And I was seduced along with everyone else in the crowd by Toni Halliday and the sounds of Curve. The old club opened my mind to most of the music that I still passionately love today.

The V st. location is without a doubt the best club-venue in the country. I’ve been to concert halls all over the U.S.A. and it always comes back to the 9:30 Club’s awesome sound-system (which I have written/gushed about at length over the years). Seeing a concert at the 9:30 Club is a sublime experience for a die-hard music fan. Perhaps none more-so than the amazing show that club-owner Seth Hurwitz treated dedicated DC music fans to on Monday night.

Medical Marijuana: $350/oz Plus Tax

‘Oaksterdam’

MSNBC is running a story this afternoon citing numbers from the CFO’s office that DC could stand to make $400,000 in taxation revenue from medical marijuana. So little, I wondered what are the Pros And Cons Of Getting A Medical Marijuana Card? They provide some justification, including the number that blew my mind just a little bit: they’re saying that medicmainal weed will run $350/oz for those eligible to purchase it, and it will be subject to 6% sales tax. You can check out this site for the best scales for weed. According to VapeActive vaping is perhaps the fastest and easiest way to feel the potential benefits of CBD when experiencing chronic anxiety attacks, if you are asking which wax pen to buy then vapeactive.com will give you the answer.

CBD oil is a natural way to reduce the daily stress that is keeping you from living your best life. But don’t take our word for it, check out these studies performed over the last few years. According to Freshbros, a study performed in 2010 showed that CBD helps to reduce anxiety in people with social anxiety disorder, or SAD. To get medicated, file for a prescription and visit the next link to buy smoking accessories.

So let’s see:

Tax on Cigarettes, $2/pack.

Tax on Liquor/Beer/Wine, 12%.

Tax on other tobacco products except cigarettes and cigars: 12%.

Tax on Weed: 6%.

Waaaaait a second…I guess it’s just subject to the same tax as other medications, but c’mon now. If you’re trying to grow marijuana legally in your own home, you can read here to know what legal steps to take.

I honestly just prefer to get the products online, if you didn’t know about this, you can get details at i49.net/how-much-marijuana-can-i-yield-per-plant. Buying quality medical marijuana and CBD products like cbd oil for anxiety is beneficial to those suffering from stress and certain kinds of diseases. You need to know that what you’re taking is safe and regulated. When it comes to buying CBD products online, we highly recommend  that you check out https://synchronicityhempoil.com/.

Well, maybe not…

Last week I reported that it was looking like Steve Strasburg’s MLB debut would be June 4.  Well, it seems that I was wrong.  The Nationals website reports that Strasburg will be starting between June 8 and June 10 in the Nats’ series against the Pirates. They haven’t said which game, exactly, but they plan on making that announcement a week before the actual day itself.  If it makes you feel better, I bought pricey tickets to the June 4 game.  Oh well. I guess I’ll just have nice seats when they take on the Reds.

Zombie Criminal in Manassas

courtesy of ‘erin m’

It sounds like the start of a good comic book series, or maybe a Dashiell Hammett detective story. A criminal fakes his own death, with the help of his attorney, to face the consequences of his life of crime, only to be caught again in the act some time later. It could have soaring arcs covering the nature of human behavior, the strength of the police force in their investigations, the whole nine yards. It would be a best seller, I promise you, except for the fact that it actually happened in Manassas the other day.

The accused is Rodney T. Newsome, who is alleged to have committed a number of petty offenses in the last few months. He was caught by a court clerk who recognized his name from his earlier case. The Commonwealth’s Attorney has now asked for an investigation as to Mr. Newsome’s disposition. Read the whole thing, it’s worth a good laugh.

A Lesson in Decision Making: Local News Edition

Today’s Lesson is: decision making.

It was quite a busy and buzz-worthy news day on this Wednesday in the District. First we lost the streetcars proposed for H Street, then we got them back. Oh … and then there was that time the Nationals sold tons of tickets for their June 4 contest vs the Cinncinatti Reds because everyone took it upon themselves to guess that the young phenom Stephen Strasburg would be making his Major League debut that day. This happened all while the Nationals organization never once announced anything on the subject.

Here’s the biggest difference in today’s decision making by the major players in Wednesday’s local daily news: Continue reading

Council Re-Funds Streetcars

The news that the City Council was thinking of de-funding the streetcar program’s capital investments this morning sent shockwaves throughout the city. The Council, in their morning meeting, de-funded the effort to the tune of $42M, reserving only $5M left for future planning. The shock was immediate, explosive, and frustrating. Phones rang off the hook in the council offices shortly thereafter with angry constituents demanding that the council reverse their decision.

This afternoon, Chairman Gray backpedaled so fast you’d think he was cycling backwards in the Tour de France. After the lunch break, in their legislative session, the Council reinstated $10M in immediate capital funding, and set aside $37M in reserved funding once the Mayor has a further plan.

The total time between the cutting of the streetcar funding and its restoration through new budget amendments was less than four hours. The response was overwhelming, and is an amazing example of the power of the constituent to influence, through emails, phone calls, tweets, blogs and other rapid-fire media, the workings of the council. Good job, everyone.

Gray revives the soda tax

courtesy of ‘Chris Rief aka Spodie Odie’

The soda tax is back, though this time as a extension of the District’s sales tax. Tim Craig at DC Wire reports that Council Chair Vincent Gray (D) wants all “non-alcoholic beverages with natural or artificial sweeteners” to be taxed at 6%. This tax replaces the now-dead proposal by Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) that would have added a 1-cent-per-ounce tax to sugar-based sodas. Presently all sodas are considered grocery items and are not subject to sales tax.

The new measure, which is a wider tax that would include diet sodas, is expected to bring in $8 million in revenue. $6.5 million of this would fund the Healthy Schools Initiative, with the leftovers going to the city’s general fund.

The new tax, while wider in scope, would raise the price of a $1.99 soda by around 12 cents. Cheh’s tax was based on the size of a beverage, resulting in nearly a 68 cent tax on a 2-liter beverage.

Red Line Pre-dawn Derailment Snarls Metro

‘Metro Spirits’
courtesy of ‘pnzr242’

The pre-dawn derailment of a WMATA construction unit, called a Petibone, has snarled the Red Line for the moment. The unit, which derailed in the direction of Glenmont, near Union Station, necessitated the single-tracking of Red Line trains between Judiciary Square and New York Avenue. Delays are currently reported at approximately one hour on the Red Line. While the unit was re-railed by 6am, the damage to the track near Union Station has just been repaired, and dual-tracking has just recommenced.

Metro says that service has “returned to normal,” but that seems like an odd farce in the recognition that nothing about Metro has been remotely normal since last June’s crash. Trains remain at slower speeds with no return to ATO in sight, minor derailments continue on a semi-regular basis, and Metro’s not talking about the improvements they’re trying to make. Some of that, sure, is their desire to keep quiet until NTSB completes their review, but the silence isn’t reassuring. Hope your commute wasn’t awful.

Councilman Thomas to Tax Non-Resident DC Employees & Contractors?

courtesy of ‘erin m’

There’s some confusion out there regarding purported commuter tax proposed by Councilman Harry Thomas Jr. (D-Ward 5).  Councilman Thomas is proposing an amendment to the budget this year that would tax non-resident employees and contractors who work for the District of Columbia, whose income is paid out of non-federal line items.

That would mean District employees whose living is made serving federally appropriated line items would not be subject to such a tax. It’s also not clear what the city would charge these individuals, but somehow they’ve come up with a total benefit to the city of $70M. They’ll do the taxation “at the source,” meaning that the city will keep a portion of the contractor/employee’s pay for themselves, as well as assessing the standard taxes for the employee/contractor’s given home state. Confused yet? Yeah, me too. All I know is that it sounds like an end-around the problems with previous commuter taxes.

Councilman Thomas can be reached via email or phone at 202.724.8028 if you’d like to give the Councilman your feedback.

When we asked one of our authors who lives outside the District, but works for the city, they said that the councilman’s plan was “some bullshitty bullshit,” and asked “Does he really want all of Arlington to move into DC? Where would we fit?”
