100 Arrested at White House in Coal Protests

100 people were arrested at the White House this afternoon as part of a civil disobedience protest concerning coal mining.  They had protested at Freedom Plaza, and then headed from Freedom Plaza to the White House, stopping traffic and disobeying pedestrian restrictions, according to WAMU.  The group was given the chance to disperse before they were arrested by the US Park Police.

My favorite quote from the AP Release: “Jeremy Cherson, a senior at American University in Washington, had a mandolin around his neck and held a carrot and stick in his hand. He said the carrot was a plea for clean energy and the stick was actions like Monday’s rally. He said he skipped a class on critical social thought to attend the rally.”

Natwar Gandhi: We’re short $175M

The figure has been hinted at a few times over the last few weeks, but now it’s here, and it’s worse than anyone thought.  According to District CFO Natwar Gandhi, DC is facing a $175M Deficit for Fiscal 2011 that starts Friday. Revenue from income and sales taxes are down $100M, and overruns from DCPS ($25M) and Medicaid ($33M) are factors as well.  Look for a lot of hand-wringing purse-string tightening, and new fees and taxes meant to make up the difference.

This is a good deal worse than anyone expected.  More detail as it’s available.

Begun, the DC food truck wars have?

With their truck positioned on Farragut Square, El Floridano was serving lunch to DC’s hungry masses when, they contend, the Golden Triangle BID ambassadors working in the park turned the sprinklers on their customers.  TBD talked with Golden Triangle’s executive director, who says that’s not quite how it went down.  Our emails and calls to Golden Triangle were not immediately returned.  We have reached out to both sides for comment, but it being Friday afternoon, none has come.  Were you there this afternoon?  Did you see what happened?

Metro will be operating without their customer service call center due to a flood.  That means all of their customer service lines are down, MetroAccess reservations have switched to online only, and there are a few emergency lines available for reservation checks.  More details as they’re available, but for now, plan on using WMATA.com for anything Metro-related.

DC Central Kitchen vandalized, needs your help

courtesy of ‘DC Central Kitchen’

DC Central Kitchen is just about as big a pillar in this community as there is.  They work with people who absolutely need help with job training, and they teach them how to work in kitchens across the metropolitan area.  They train hundreds of people every year and work to get them jobs.  In this economy, that’s about the closest thing to sainthood as you can find.  Last night, some people vandalized their vans, doing hundreds of dollars, if not thousands, of damage to the vehicles they use to feed the homeless in DC.

It took hours today for DC Police to respond to repeated calls to come examine the crime scene, which crippled their morning deliveries with the fleet of vans, which is equally frustrating.  Who does this?  Who goes after someone who does this kind of work?  I can’t explain it.  There are some saying it could be a Rush Limbaugh supporter who didn’t take kindly to their video flipping the radio host off.  It’s entirely possible that it’s a disgruntled former student, too. In any event, perhaps take this moment to show them some appreciation?

We have great community service in this town, and in the face of travesties like this, we must show them our support.

More Lion Cubs born at the National Zoo

If you thought the first four cubs, born to Shera, were awesome, wait until you meet their half-siblings, born to Nababiep today. There are three of the little ones in Nababiep’s den now, and the Zoo thinks it’s possible that there will be additional cubs born today, as lions can frequently spread out multiple births across hours.

The first three cubs were born starting just after 8:00am this morning.

The father, Luke, was seen preening and accepting high-fives from the other nearby great cats and smoking a cigar. He will worry about sending them to Lion college once the “Dad high” wears off later today. Continue reading

Here Comes The Bag Monster

Andy Keller, known to many as the “Bag Monster” is bringing his 500 – 700 plastic bag suit and plastic bag display to DC today.  If you caught Andy when he visited DC on September 6th, then you already know that Keller’s suit represents the amount of plastic bags the average American uses in a year and the rest of his display, 45,000 plastic bags, a single person’s lifetime consumption of bags. Keller’s goal is to educate communities about the harms of single-use bags, and while DC’s bag tax has helped diminish bag consumption, we’ve still got a ways to go.

If you spot the bag monster, send us a tweet @welovedc with his location.

Metro station names to change?

‘SBB CFF FFS LOL OMG BBQ WTF TLA’

Navy Yard and Waterfront/SEU are the latest stations about to go through the giant renaming dance.  According to JDLand, they may well become much longer.  Aaron Morrissey, intrepid editor of DCist, has an editorial in the Post today, crafted from his DCist post on the issue that raises a fine issue concerning the station names. The point is also one that Matt Johnson of Greater Greater Washington tackled this May.

It’s concerning to see station names balloon in length, and making Navy Yard into Capitol Riverfront/Nationals Park/Navy Yard seems to me to be an egregious case.  Worse, the renaming of Waterfront/SEU to Waterfront/SEU/Arena Stage when SEU is no longer offering classes seems to me to be a peculiar turn of phrase.

I’m just wondering how long it is before we rename Metro Center to Metro Center/No really, stop pushing/OMG WTF BBQ.  At this point, the Vegas line for that change is 5 years.  I’d take the under.

The renaming of stations is certainly a fine thing in the case of the creation of something new, but perhaps we should work on some sort of parsimonious compromise wherein station names can’t exceed four words.  I’m all for Johnson’s map of shorter station names, and think it may well simplify a lot of issues.

On Friday, Mayor Fenty declined the Republican nomination for Mayor stating that “While I am humbled by the nomination, I will not accept it.” He pledged his support to work with Chariman Gray. Fenty won the Republican nomination with 822 write-in votes. It is unknown how many Republicans and Independents would have voted for him in an open election, and we’ll have to keep speculating on that count.

Gray vs the Meters

‘Pay for time’
courtesy of ‘afagen’

The first battle of the Gray administration is to…walk back meter fees?  Really?  In a week when the deficit could be rising to $100M? I mean, I hate the fact that I have to carry a couple rolls of quarters at any given point, but the answer here isn’t dialing back the meter fees.  The answer is moving to a telephone parking service across the city, like the various trials that are already underway in Foggy Bottom, Dupont and elsewhere in the city, where you can just call in a payment and adjust your meter payment without needing four pounds of quarters.  There’s another option, and that’s what Arlington has adopted with their iPark system where the city takes a deposit and you slowly (or quickly in DC’s case…) work through your credit while the city earns interest on the money already in their coffers.

Don’t dial back the fees when you’ve got a $100M deficit.  Make parking less painful, yes, but not less expensive.  Meters aren’t what drive people away, parking tickets are.

Rhee clarifies “Devastating” comment

In the Post’s Local Opinions Blog, DCPS Chancellor Michelle Rhee clarified her earlier comments on the election, wherein she called the results devastating.  She has stepped back her remarks to refer to the status of the election as a repudiation of reform efforts:

“I was describing the perception by some that this election had been a referendum on reform of the D.C. schools itself. If the results were to be read as a repudiation of reform, that indeed would be devastating for D.C. children, for the city and for children throughout the country who are so dependent on successful school reform efforts.”

Rhee’s status as Chancellor has come to be the subject of much public speculation in the wake of Vincent Gray’s win of the Democratic Party nomination for mayor on Tuesday.  TBD today speculates on who might take her place atop DCPS if Gray decides that Michelle Rhee cannot serve his new administration, and questions have abounded to Gray, as well, with Mark Plotkin finding new and unique methods of asking the same question over and over and over today to Gray on his radio show.  Gray has publicly said he won’t make any decisions until he was properly elected and not just nominated.

Dude! Where’s My Ginseng?!!

NBCWashington reports that two local area men have been found guilty of harvesting and hunting for wild herb ginseng at Savage River State Forest. Wild ginseng touted for its anti-tumor, anti-viral, antioxidant, and metabolic effects can potentially sell for $300 per pound.

According to the Western Maryland Research & Education Center, Ginseng grows “in hardwood forests in the eastern United States on well-drained, north-and east-facing slopes with rich soils.” Sounds like the DC area is the perfect.

The greatest threat to wild-simulated ginseng is human theft, also known as “hunting sang” in the Appalachian region. Currently, Ginseng is  listed by the Convention for International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), and harvesting, buying, collecting and selling ginseng requires proper documentation and permits.

Michelle Rhee’s Rumored Resignation and what actually happened today

Twitter was all abuzz late this afternoon as rumors of a four line resignation email to DCPS staffers spread like wildfire.  While Michelle Rhee’s tenure is in question with the election of Vincent Gray, nothing has been written in stone yet, and no announcements concerning her departure had been made.

We Love DC has obtained a copy of the email that sparked this rumor, and I have to say, if you read this as a resignation email, you likely need as much reading comprehension help as so many of the DCPS students do.  The email was sent this afternoon at 1pm and was titled “Keeping It Moving”:

Metro pulls 99 buses from service after morning fire

After this morning’s bus fire on the Beltway, Metro announced this afternoon that they are pulling the other 99 Orion VI Diesel buses from service while they replace the hydraulic pumps.

The pump issue may have contributed to the fire that happened this morning. If you own hydraulic pumps, we recommend you to check out this website you will find everything you need to know about hydraulic pumps repair.

This is not the first time that the Orion VI bus series has had an issue with flammability. In 2007, Metro had an issue with braking systems and air dryers that caused a full refit of the Orion VI buses.

Metro began purchasing the Orion VI buses in 2000 and have approximately 100 in their fleet. There will be some delays today as the buses are cycled out and replaced with reserve buses.

Fenty Asks Obama For Some Help

‘DC’s Mayor Adrian Fenty’

Mayor Fenty is trailing in the polls. The District is less than a week from Primary Election Day. So what does Fenty do? He calls President Obama.

“I have personally reached out,” Fenty told WTOP although he has not named which White House official he spoke with over the phone.

Fenty told WTOP that he personally called the White House and asked to speak with President Obama and the First Lady regarding a potential endorsement in his name.

Besides a helping-hand from a federal face in a local campaign, President Obama and the White House don’t have much to offer the current District mayor besides a continued personal relationship with the first family.

In an ideal situation, Fenty would like to see the Obama’s make a personal appearance before the Sept. 14 primary announcing their endorsement of his campaign or for the White House to print an official endorsement of his campaign, but so far there has been no response to Fenty’s request.

Fenty does remain realistic that this last minute high-profile endorsement is unlikely.

“For lots of reasons I don’t think that’s going to happen,” he said.

L’Shanah Tovah: A (Short) Rosh Hashanah Story

‘Shana Tova – Happy new year’
courtesy of ‘chany14’

Happy New Year to my fellow members of the extended family that is Judaism. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year and high holiday, begins at sundown tonight. This is a time for families to come together, observe, and pray as a unit. Or, if you’re like me, you’re left to your own devices as far as observing the holiday and praying goes.

A story came out today via the City Paper that Jewish residents living on Wisconsin Avenue NW (near Neapolitan pizzeria 2 Amys) encountered a hitch in their Rosh Hashanah festivities. Plans were set to celebrate the eventual ground breaking and opening of a modernized Giant grocery  store and large residential development named Cathedral Commons for Thursday afternoon. According to the City Paper, people living in the area wished to attend but many couldn’t due to the Jewish New Year overlapping with the development launch.

The launch party has been moved as to not conflict with Rosh Hashanah, leaving the once verklempt residents to observe the New Year uninterrupted by neighborhood events.

Updated information for the launch party is not available at this time.

L’Shanah Tovah!
