Rebecca J.: Friday it’s off to the Surfside roofdeck for margs, chips n’ queso and tacos. Afterwards, I’ll be sipping some bourbon at Kitchen 2404 in Glover Park. Saturday I’m headed to Annapolis for an afternoon boat ride on the bay and dinner at the waterfront, after which I’ll be hitting up the Annapolis bar scene with my lady friends. Hopefully, I’ll leave Annapolis early enough to miss the traffic back to DC and in time to grab a Rita’s Italian Ice on my way back.

Tom: Tonight we’ll kick off the weekend with a neighborhood Happy Hour at San Antonio in Brookland, getting some time to hang out with my neighbors and get to know faces to go with email addresses on the neighborhood listserve. Friday night there’s always Baseball on the Barn. Saturday I intend to enjoy the delicious weekendness of it all, with a trip to the Bloomingdale Farmers’ Market, before DJ lil’e hits the stage at 9:30 club. Sunday is (possibly) Strasburg’s first start at Hagerstown, so we’re trekking on up to see the Suns. Looks like a good weekend!

Hot Ticket: Marissa Nadler @ Red Palace, 7/29/2011

Head over to Red Palace Friday night for an evening of sultry, dreamy indie-folk with Boston chanteuse Marissa Nadler. Her music is melancholic and lovely, at times reminiscent of Mazzy Star.  She has received a good amount of  buzz lately: her self-titled album was featured on NPR’s First Listen, and she was one of SPIN’s 5 best new artists in June. Her single “Baby, I Will Leave You In the Morning” from her latest album was featured on the Pitchfork Playlist. She’s wrapping up her summer tour of US and Canada with fellow Boston indie-folksters Faces on Film.

We Love Music: Hayes Carll @ Rock & Roll Hotel, 7/23/11

courtesy of Hayes Carrl.

Hayes Carll plays country music I can get into. Last Saturday he turned the Rock & Roll Hotel into a honky tonk for the night when he and his band The Poor Choices brought their foot-stompin’ blend of country, bar-room rock & twangy folk to the stage. Texas native Carll and his gang are on US tour right now in support of his fourth studio album “KMAG, YOYO (& Other American Stories) “, released in February of this year on Lost Highway Records.

Hayes Carll packed the house, playing to a sold-out crowd of very enthusiastic Washingtonians. Cowboy boots and even a few cowboy hats were in the house (not onstage), though I wouldn’t say the audience looked particularly “country”. Country or not, they were clearly excited and into the music of the evening. Carll started off his set on a mild note with the quiet, twangy “The Letter,” from his latest album “KMAG, YOYO.” He and the band were just warming up, though. Things sped up a little for “Wild As A Turkey”, from his album “Trouble In Mind.” The song showcased his humorous, sometime self-deprecating lyrics, and warbling vocal style.

Tom: While the mercury is once again heading for the triple digits, I’ll be helping a client move their offices into Dupont this weekend, just a stone’s through from the delicious Shake Shack. Perhaps after the long day, you’ll catch me heading for Rita’s Water Ice on Rhode Island Avenue.  Sunday, I’ll head for my usual breakfast haunt before hitting the Ballpark for the last of the Nationals/Mets series. Sunday night will see me out in my neighborhood stoopin’ it with some bourbon cherry lemonade, and the warm Sunday evening.

Jenn: For the second weekend in a row I’ll be escaping town. But if I were here, I’d check out as many of the Rickey contestants as possible. Earlier this month, the Rickey was officially named DC’s native cocktail at a proclamation reading and then a plaque dedication at its creation site (now the JW Marriott). Never heard of the Rickey? Here’s your history lesson. The DC Craft Bartenders Guild is also putting on its annual Rickey Contest, ending with a showdown on Monday, August 1 at the Jack Rose. For some reason the contest’s been very under the radar this year, but luckily the always intrepid Fritz Hahn has the scoop. Judging last year was a fantastic experience for me, and as it’s a great way to sample the creativity of our local bartender talent I encourage you to check out the list – it’s not too late!

Hot Ticket: Hayes Carll @ Rock & Roll Hotel, 7/23/2011

Texas native Hayes Carll brings his special blend of folk-tinged, quirky, alt-country/rock to the Rock & Roll Hotel this Saturday night. Carll’s laid-back southern drawl pairs well with quick-witted lyrics and an upbeat country sound. His songs range from banjo-pickin’ twangy ballads like “Bottle in My Hand” to the quick-fire lyrical rocking assault of “KMAG YOYO“, which sounds like an updated version of Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues“.

He is on US tour now in support of his fourth studio album, “KMAG YOYO” which was released by Lost Highway Records in February of this year.

In the real of complaints I have to say “jeez, the weekend again already?” might be my favorite. If you’ve only now started to recover from your own “day of food and fire,” as my friend Suzanne calls the 4th of July, maybe you don’t have plans yet. Well, steal ours. If you see us there please don’t look us in the eye – we’re shy like that.

Brittany: The big thing this weekend (where I think I will be seeing everybody I know) is definitely C.L.I.T.fest (that stands for Combating Latent Inequality Together, by the way – nothing else you might be thinking). The three day event – “combining music and education to both challenge patriarchal oppression and promote involvement in DIY” – kicks off on Friday at St Stephen’s church in Columbia Heights with an impressive, feministy musical line-up headlined by Lemuria and also featuring super-good DC girls Trophy Wife. Come back throughout the weekend for classes on screen printing, self-defense, and everything else a modern kid needs to know to “undermine patriarchy, homophobia, and transphobia in punk and DIY” including more music at St Stephens and the Black Cat. For just a bit more music and DC love, I will wrap up my weekend on Monday by seeing my friends Title Tracks at Fort Reno.

Mosley: It’s the second weekend of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival; I went last weekend and enjoyed myself.  I’m looking forward to seeing more of Peace Corps and Columbia cultures.  I’m particularly looking forward to going to one of the late night concerts of the Rhythm and Blues culture (here’s the schedule for the musical acts).  I don’t normally go to the night concerts, so this will be an experience.  Other than that, I’m looking forward to some relaxation.  I’m thinking either a lazy day walk to the Dumbarton Oaks Museum.  Or an even lazier walk to find a good milk shake.  I’ve tried Shake Shack and Goodstuff, so something else is in order…suggestions welcomed!

It’s that time again – for us to rub it in your faces what exciting lives we all live and give you the opportunity to live vicariously through us or try to grab ahold of that desperate desire to BE us & steal our weekend plans. This week with extra violence!

Tom: We’re headed out west for a couple weeks to celebrate my sister’s wedding in the bay area, but were I here, I’d be stocking up and getting ready for the Fourth!  I’d be using DCRA’s fireworks map to find some smash-boom-bang for early on in the evening, and then I’d likely be heading to Cardozo High to watch the fireworks. While it’s great to watch on the Mall, I far prefer some of the alternate vistas this city has to offer, especially from its rooftops. The Key Bridge is also a great spot to watch.  Happy Independence Day, everyone!

Marissa: Long weekend and celebrating the birth of our nation! Saturday I might just be crazy enough to try to get a table at the newly opened Graffiato since the restaurant scene has been all abuzz about it. Sunday I’ll be going all-American and spending the afternoon at the Nationals Game (hint: there’s a double-header on Saturday if you’re interested, and a home game on the 4th as well). As for the 4th of July, I might buck up, pack a picnic and head to the Mall since I’m pretty sure they don’t let GW alums onto the University’s rooftops all willy-nilly to watch fireworks. Plus the Capitol Fourth Concert sounds good. Happy fourth of July!

Mosley: Quite the weekend for me!  Two of my favorite things are this weekend: Smithsonian Folklife Festival and the 4th of July Fireworks on the Mall.  I’m planning on spending most of Saturday down at the Folklife Festival, taking in culture from Columbia and digging the Rhythm and Blues.  Pictures will be forth coming (check out the past few years).  Then Saturday night, planning on seeing Tron at AFI in Silver Spring; this will be one of many of my favorite 80s movies they are showing throughout the summer.  Sunday I’m planning on kayaking on the Eastern Branch (AKA: the Anacostia).  The Anacostia is awesome to kayak on; few people, a ton of wildlife, and sights not often seen.  I launch out of Bladensburg and can get as far south as RFK and Kingman Island.  I’ll finish up the long weekend with a BBQ on the 4th, and heading over to the Mount Vernon trail to shoot pictures of the fireworks (see past years here).  I love being down around the crowd for the fireworks; it’s always so much fun!

Tom: My weekend starts today, with the matinee of the Nationals and Mariners, followed by Neil Gaiman’s book signing at the Press Club for the tenth anniversary of American Gods. Saturday morning we’re headed out to the Farm before we head up to Baltimore to celebrate a good friend’s birthday at Camden Yards. Don’t worry, we’re scalping the tickets, so Angelos won’t get a cent of my money directly. Sunday should be a day of recovery, and I’m betting we’ll be in a movie theatre for Cars 2, either in Chinatown or Alexandria, followed by dinner at Jaleo or Ted’s Montana.

Rebecca J: Friday fun starts off with hoping on the Acela to head back to DC. Luckily, the bar car serves Dogfish so that should get me through the journey. Once off the train, I’m going to DC dive bar extraordinaire Bobby Lew’s Saloon to celebrate a friend’s birthday. I imagine a late night stop at the Amsterdam Falafel Shop on 18th will be in order. Saturday, I’ve got some gardening to attend to but after that it’s off to the Safeway Barbecue Battle, where scores of BBQ Masters will compete to win the hearts of BBQ lovers, $40,000 in cash/prizes and the coveted title of National Pork Barbecue Champion; the contest benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. Sunday after all that pork goodness, I should probably do some sort of physical activity. With the weekend weather primed for heat and sun, I’ll combine my need for exercise with my need to stay cool by finally trying out Potomac Paddlessports’ Stand Up Paddling. I did it when I went to Hawaii, so I think I can handle the treacherous waters of the Potomac.

Rachel: I’m embarking upon a self-imposed stay-cation for the weekend and will be hiding away in my studio apartment. What will I be doing? Turning off all electronic devices, sticking a guitar in my hands along with a pen and paper on the side, and writing. My goal is to come away with at least one solid song from the process and a lot of additional material to continue to work on as time progresses. If I weren’t tucked away in songwriter’s solitude, I’d likely find myself at Kramer’s — which happens often on the weekends — for a bagel and lox on Saturday. I’ve also been trying to stay active now that I have my mountain bike, so I’d like to scope out some good riding paths around town that are as far away from major streets as possible. When I need a break from music making, my bike will take me somewhere to clear my cluttered head. Any suggestions of where to ride? Leave ’em in the comments!

Brittany: On Thursday, I am heading to the Black Cat (second time this week) to see charming English twee-pop outfit Allo Darlin’. I really am terribly twee, after all. Friday night, I will be stopping by the headquarters of The Dunes LLC in Columbia Heights for a fashion-photography exhibit closing party, featuring a few vintage and boutique vendors to shop while partying – including my beloved Ginger Root. I cannot stay very late though, because I have to wake up rather early to embark on a mini-road trip up to Brooklyn. This will call for a coffee stop at SOVA or Peregrine before I drive anywhere. My companion and I will devote the rest of our weekend to an intense schedule of seeing friends, shopping, drinking awesome cocktails, and, possibly, the McQueen exhibit.

Addison: This weekend is busy for me, which really isn’t unexpected at all. I just moved into a new apartment, so Friday I’m heading over to Arrowine in Arlington to pick up some charcuterie, cheese, and wine for a housewarming party (going classy now that i’m out of the group house and in a big boy apartment). Saturday, its gonna be sunny and hot, so I really can’t think of anything better to be doing than floating down the Shenandoah river in an inner tube while sipping on some frosty brews.  Sunday, as usual, I can be found down around the Capitol playing kickball and flipping cups at My Brothers Place.

Tom: We’re headed north to Charm City for our anniversary, taking in the BROS at the Autograph Saturday night after dinner at Tapas Teatro.  We had hoped to head to Richmond to see a friend’s art opening, but it has been postponed. We may head down to the Civil War Capital anyhow, just to see the sites and get away from the hustle and bustle.

Marissa: Friday I’ll be taking advantage of Jazz in the Sculpture Garden which started up for the summer a few weeks ago. Picnic dinner and sangria? Done and done. Since the Corcoran Gallery of Art is offering free admissions on Saturday until Labor Day, I’ll be taking in a few exhibits there for the afternoon, before I make my way over to Harry’s Smokehouse on Sunday evening to watch (and eat burgers) DC Central Kitchen’s chefs-in-training compete in a burger slider competition.

Marissa: I’ll be kicking off my weekend by seeing my friend’s band, Naylor Court, play at the Velvet Lounge. Show starts at 8 pm and it’s $8 at the door for some great original music and some good covers. Friday, I’ll try to show my face at and my love for all the food trucks at Truckeroo down at Half and M St. SE. Twenty trucks, live music and it’s free to get in? Done and done. Come Sunday, I’ll be picking strawberries out at Butler’s Orchard with some friends and promptly whipping up homemade strawberry ice cream.

Mosley: I really didn’t have any grand plans for this weekend, until I got my weekly e-mail from Cultural Tourism DC.  Two things jumped out at me: Friday night is looking kind of haunting, as in a walking tour of the most Haunted House in DC.  I’ve been wanting to try this tour for a few months now.  And on Saturday, there is a fascinating program at the Textile Musuem titled “Sounds of Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani Students Dance Ensemble.”  The sound portion is what interests me, as the description reads “the audience will experience lyrical sounds found nowhere else in the world’s songbook.”  Sunday…well Sunday will be where ever the road takes me.

Fedward: Friday might be a good time to head up to see my friends at Forum Theatre in BOBRAUSCHENBERGAMERICA (Forum Artistic Director Michael Dove acting This I gotta see). Saturday the Social Chair and I have plans to hang out with Don and Darling Wife, maybe with some pizza, maybe with some different pizza and beer, maybe with some beer and pizza. Or who knows? Maybe we won’t even have pizza at all! Crazy! But since it’s SAVOR weekend it seems the beer part is non-negotiable. Sunday we’ll head over to Eventide for bourbon and BBQ, and if we haven’t had too much bourbon in the process we’ll stop by the Passenger for our usual Sunday nightcap.

Tiff: My Saturday is all about the JHOSH. I’m performing, with 199 of my BFFs, in Dhoonya Dance’s annual student and performance company show at the Duke Ellington Theater, and this year the theme is all about the Indian-American experience. So I’ll be spending my entire day rehearsing, fussing at my costume, and finally performing. Sunday is all about pretending I was born a hundred years earlier: strawberry picking at Butler’s Orchard and jam-making.

We Love Weekends: Memorial Day Style

A Rodin

Fedward: The Social Chair is busy with work all weekend, and after the week I’ve had it’ll be nice to put my feet up and not do much of anything. Accordingly only two days are planned, for a wedding (not mine) on Friday and an associated celebration Sunday afternoon. Other than that I might pay a restorative visit to the National Gallery of Art (look for me at the Matisse cutouts and the found alphabet in the East Building, and the Dutch Cabinet and the Rodin sculptures (sigh) in the West Building. Throw in the usual hangover brunch at the Passenger and some general photographic wandering about town and there’s my long weekend.

Dave: This weekend marks my last in DC before skipping town to move back to Boston. In honor, I’m trying to squeeze in all of my favorites with close friends. Friday night, I’ll get one more softball game with my alumni team in under the Washington Monument (against our rivals from South Bend, nonetheless). Saturday will start with some afternoon drinks on the RiRa patio for my roommate’s birthday before I join my band for one last gig that evening at Ragtime. We’re going to blow the top of that place. Sunday will end appropriately at Nationals Park, with an afternoon game to enjoy my last day in the District. Arrivederci, DC.

Mosley: Saturday morning I’m going on a DC Preservation League walking tour of St. Elizabeths.  I’ve taken the tour before, but I’m interested in seeing what’s changed with the DHS construction project.  Also, I’ll hopefully be getting better pictures than the first time around.  The Preservation League does some great tours, and I always recommend them to people.  Other than that, my weekend is fairly free, so any suggestions in the comments would be appreciated.

Marissa: Being the savvy shopper that I am, I plan on heading to the newly opened Nordstrom Rack on Saturday and expanding my wardrobe and shoe collection a bit, while shrinking my bank account at the same time. Sunday will be filled with food for me. I’m incredibly excited to be one of the judges at Lamb Jam (sorry folks, you’ll have to use the waitlist) and then heading to DCCK’s Sound Bites at the 9:30 Club. You can still get tickets for $50 and I can’t wait to check out all the good food and music while supporting a great cause.

Brittany: I recently put together that my rarely being hung-over on weekend mornings might explain my lack of enthusiasm for going to brunch – the two seem intimately related. This weekend, I intend to test that theory. This starts on Thursday with the Thrillist and Don Julio Tequila Luxury Drop party, followed by tUnE-YarDs at Red Palace. Friday brings the super-rad vitaminwater uncapped LIVE opening night with the Fatback/Tenderloin/Que Sera triple threat. Saturday brings DC Grey Market, a Positive Force benefit show (that bit being totally xstraightxedgex, obvs), and then a trip to the beautiful House of Sweden for a rooftop party to celebrate that country’s Music Doc Film Festival, probably followed by more something, somewhere. Come Sunday, I want to be able to arrive at brunch and see what all this hungover dining has going for it.

Addison: Friday, I am heading to one of my all time favorite spring events: the Mount Vernon Spring Wine Festival and Sunset Tour. In an effort to channel my inner NASCAR driver, some buddies and I are heading out to WV’s Summit Point Kart for a few laps. Saturday night, a friend’s birthday is the perfect excuse to partake in some Dupont Circle nightlife. And, as usual, Sunday I will be out front of the Capitol playing kickball.

Mosley: I get to see one of my cousins graduate from Catholic on Saturday (Congrats Jillian!), so that day/night isn’t exactly free for me.  But if I had that day to myself, you’d find me at Cheverly Day!  Cheverly is my hometown, and I look forward to Cheverly Day for the same reason I look forward to the Fourth of July: the awesome fireworks.  Sunday I’m taking it easy for most of the day, but in the afternoon I’m going to a DC Social Flickr meetup at Malcolm X Park.  Photo nerds will abound, and all are welcome, regardless of your photo experience.  If you’ve ever wanted to talk photography with a bunch of camera enthusiasts, this is the event to go to.

I have no idea what to expect, but it sounds pretty hip and I am a hip dude. Therefore, I am a dude with a hip.

Paulo: This weekend we are going to Charlottesville, Virginia to see a friend get married. While we’re there, why not see the history there is to see? Monticello and Ash Lawn are on the itinerary, maybe a bite at Michie Tavern, and I’m told the UVA campus itself is a sight to behold. Continue reading

Dave: It’s a really jampacked Easter Weekend for me. First off, I’m starting Friday with my first alumni softball game of the season, playing under the Monument before heading over to the Exchange for a pitcher and some tater tots. I won’t be there for long, because I have to get out to Ragtime out in Courthouse where my band is presenting an epic tribute to Hootie and the Blowfish’sCracked Rear View. We’ll play other stuff, too. Promise. I’m getting on a plane to go join my family for the rest of the weekend, but rest assured that if I were to stay in town, I’d have Screwtop’s Easter Brunch as one of my top priorities.

Tom: Springtime, at long last! Easter is this weekend, and while I’d normally be singing with the Falls Church Presbyterian Church choir, I may just be an observer at the Basilica in Brookland, where a good friend is singing as part of Holy Week services.  As for Easter Brunch, with the teeming hordes descending upon all of my favorite establishments, I’m thinking I’ll just hit Eastern Market this week for some eggs and really great bacon and maybe a local chicken to roast on Sunday night.  We’re planning a little themed shindig for Game of Thrones‘ second night.  Saturday, catch me in the garden getting ready for next weekend’s Garden Guild monastery plant sale. I’ve got beds to prepare for some lovely blueberry bushes. Continue reading

Patrick Palafox: I am pretty excited about this weekend. I’m planning on checking out the Cool Dudes Hanging Out show happening over at theVelvet Lounge this Friday. I have been listening to Mike Lawrence’s podcast Nerd of Mouth and already know that he will make me laugh. Then on Saturday I shall consume Cake with my ears at the 9:30 Club. The last time I saw Cake was at a music festival in Austin and I was super far away. I thought that I would never have a chance to see them again, but now I do.

Marissa: Friday night one of my good guy friends is in town, so I’m hoping a bunch of us will “bro” it out at Meridian Pint for the release of DC Brau, the city’s first production beer in more than 50 years. Saturday night I’ll be listening to five local bands at GWU, when my old community service sorority throws their 5th Annual Battle of the Bands. Patrick: I am starting my weekend early with Tacos are a well known We Love DC household. Friday I will be lending a hand with the Arlington Player’s production of 42nd Street. Saturday I will be celebrating a birthday at a new Sports bar on U Street: Touchdown. I will be ending my weekend at Signature Theatre to review their production of Art. That’s how I do my weekends: fast and furious.

Marissa: After a whirlwind week, I’m hoping to achieve my usual lofty weekend aspiration of getting a little culture and some good food. This week marked the start of the 25th annual Filmfest DC and so Friday or Saturday I’m planning on catching an Italian film, Loose Cannons. Filmfest DC runs until April 17th and you get tickets for just $11. Saturday afternoon I’ll be checking out Pleasant Pops Popapalooza in Mt. Pleasant which is running from 11 am until 3 pm. Marissa: I’m stretching my birthday out for as long as possible and celebrating a new job by kicking off Friday night with a party hosted by my best friend, Jennifer. We’ll probably all end up at either Madam’s Organ or Marvin. Saturday, an old friend from my high school fencing team (you read that right. Fencing.) is in town and I’m hoping we can catch up at Pound The Hill. Then it’s off to check out Nana, a neat clothing boutique, which reopens this week.

Patrick P.: I will be heading down to Miami this weekend to expierience the ever expanding Ultra Music Festival with Michael Darpino and my brother. I got some sun block with the special SPF to protect my body from free radicals caused by the sun. I also will be packing anti-crazy touchy raver repellant to ward off those that feel they can touch whoever they want while using illegal narcotics. My goal is to stay hydrated, excited, and dance myself into size 29 skinny jeans.
