Carl: Since Mother Weaver is coming to town on Friday, I plan to entertain her by taking her to see the lazy-ass welfare pandas, perhaps a concert at Millennium Stage, and definitely a visit to Ted Kennedy’s grave, not that it is entertaining, but it would be a meaningful visit. In the evening on Saturday Mom will enjoy a trip to Science Club for some $4 PBRs. On Sunday we will get up early and do some kayaking at Great Falls before I take her back to the airport. She may have other plans, but as long as she is staying under my roof, she will do what I say. How’s it feel now that the tables are turned, Mom?

Donna: With the weather this great, I’ll be outside as much as possible–on the deck, on the trails, and at the Virginia Scottish Games and Festival in the Plains. This shindig includes Celtic crafts, bridies (see, I used Wikipedia as a source) and caber tossing, which my friend Cat describes as big hairy men tossing telephone poles end over end. I’ll be lobbying to stay for the Saturday night concert with the Glengarry Bhoys. Having just returned from a couple days in the Rockies and still hankering for good beer, I’m also hoping to head for the patio of Fireflies in Del Ray,  which carries a few Colorado microbrews like the rich and sweet Breckenridge Vanilla Porter. Mmm, mmm good!

Rebecca: I’ve been out of town for the last four weekends, so I’m ALL about chilling out in DC.  Friday I’ll check out the movies at Bethesda Row. With all the summer blockbusters, it’s time to catch an off-beat, foreign flick.  If you haven’t caught the fever, it’s College Football season, so my Saturday’s will now be dedicated to cheering on Mizzou and Notre Dame.  If you’re interested in local college teams: UMD plays Cal at 10pm and Georgetown takes on Holy Cross.  Sunday I’ll mosey on down to the U.S. Capitol’s West Lawn for the NSO’s FREE Labor Day concert.  Must remember to bring a picnic, blanket and some candles. All I can say is “Thank God Monday is a National Holiday!” Sleeping in late. That’s my plan. Continue reading

It’s the last weekend of August- are you trying to fit in just that last little bit of summer before Labor Day? Here’s how we’re making the most of our time this weekend.

Kirk:  This is my birthday weekend, so I’ll be out an about and not on my own dime.  My parents are taking me to Cava Mezze in Capitol Hill on Friday for some delicious Mediterranean food. My Saturday will feature some as of yet undetermined party spots, and then Sunday will be all about Freefest.  I’ve still not nailed down my lineup, but I’m definitely going to fit in Blink 182, just to say that I saw them.

Katie: I’m moving apartments this weekend, so the entire thing will be taken up with trips to Ikea, the Crate & Barrel outlet in Alexandria and Target. Doesn’t that sound fun? No? Yeah, no. If I were going to be frolicking freely around the city instead of unpacking coffee mugs and arranging my closet, I’d do all kinds of things out in the sun, as I’m feeling crunch time as the summer season dwindles. (AH! Say it ain’t so!) I might take a nice water taxi ride from Alexandria over to the National Harbor and check out Ashton Kutcher’s celebrity eatery Ketchup just for kicks and giggles. I also hear fun things about Bobby McKey’s Dueling Piano Bar over in those parts, who doesn’t love Jay-Z on the piano? Sunday I’d probably find a key lounging spot with some iced coffee – maybe say a stop by Tryst on my way to Meridian Hill Park. That sounds perfect. Too bad I’ll be wrangling boxes, packing peanuts and clothing hangers instead.

Shannon: This weekend I’m going to take advantage of the final days of Restaurant Week (though if you can’t make it this weekend, many restaurants are extending the promotion).  And I’m also going to take advantage of the final days of summer (sigh) by spending an entire day at the pool with some sweet tea vodka, my summer drink of choice.  I’d also like to stop by my favorite nearby winery, Three Fox Vineyards, for a day of wine tours and lounging around in a hammock.  Because what says summer better than laziness and drinking? Ah, one of the last summer weekends is upon us. The city is emptying out, you can have bar space to yourself, everyone’s baking in the heat and living slow. Enjoy.

Katie: It seems like DC’s disgustingly hot weather is going to keep up this weekend, so my plans will revolve around keeping cool. I’d happily take a day trip down to the beach at Lake Anna State Park outside of Fredericksburg, where you can soak up the sun on a sand beach, and float around in the huge lake. There’s even a snack shack with ice cream when you need a cool treat. To continue my plans to stay cool, I’ll probably be spending Saturday night on the roof deck at Eventide in Clarendon where they’ve built an entire food, wine and cocktail list revolving around cold. Sunday I’ll head over to my new Farmer’s Market crush, the small but loveable Columbia Pike market (props to WLDC author Donna for suggesting it to me!) and grab some watermelon for the fridge. The rest of Sunday will be spent indoors reveling in air conditioning catching up on summer flicks like (500) Days of Summer or Julie and Julia.

Jasmine: This weekend, I am venturing to a couple of places I’ve never been before. I pass the Postal Museum on my new commute, so I figure I better check that place out. Right now, they have an exhibition featuring alphabet stamps, which sounds like it will feed the word nerd in me. I also want to take a day trip to check out Great Country Farm’s outdoor laser tag setup in Bluemont, VA, which I read about a while ago. They have a lot of other activities, too (including a vineyard across the street) in case laser tag is a bust, but I am envisioning it something like the paintball scene in 10 Things I Hate About You.

Paulo: We’ll be at the Philips Collection to see Paint Made Flesh, an exhibit of modern post-World War II paintings of the human figure. Time permitting, we may also check out the Corcoran Gallery’s exhibition of William Eggleston’s Democratic Camera. Oh, and Alexandria residents may want to check out the current show of landscapes at The Art League Gallery, Torpedo Factory — especially since it includes a painting by (ahem) my wife.

Kirk: The highlight of my weekend (and possibly my month) will be the Air Guitar Championships at the 930 Club on Friday. I attended the regional competition in May and have been looking forward to this weekend ever since. The plan is to pregame with some friends at the Saloon on U St., grab a healthy dinner at Ben’s and then head over to 930.

Paulo: The National Gallery is chock full of awesome for the summer. I’m especially glad to see they have an exhibit on Judith Leyster, a stand-out female artist of the Dutch Baroque who trained under Frans Hals; and the Royal Armor and Portraits from Imperial Spain is an excellent survey of Spanish marshal art and artifacts. Also visiting from the earthquake-stricken Abruzzo Museum in Italy: the Beffi
Triptych

Katie: To kick off the weekend I’m going to try and swing by Urbana to partake in their $3 birthday celebration to snag myself some $3 pizza and $3 prosecco. On Saturday I’m headed out to see Jason Mraz with G. Love and Special Sauce at Merriweather Post Pavillion – perfect summer lawn concert! Sunday I’m meeting fellow food writer Jordan Wright (have to give her a shout out, she’s fabulous!) for a dim sum brunch she promises is “off the hook”. Afterwards I’m taking a friend shopping for an overdue birthday present and stopping by Georgetown Cupcake for what will be, if you can believe it, my first time there. And what Katie weekend would be complete without pool time? At this point you should just assume it’s happening.

Acacia: I will be dedicating this weekend’s plans and this weekend planner entry to my good friend and roommate Sam Rosen-Amy, whose birthday it is TODAY and whose birthday celebrations are commandeering my weekend. Happy Birthday, Sam, you are 23 on July 23rd. I hope this means I don’t have to get you anything now… Okay, that being said, tonight we’re heading over to start the celebratory weekend with an outdoors screening of Top Gun down in SW by the waterfront. Friday or Saturday I may finally check a visit to the Newseum off my to-do list. Sunday, after recovering from Sam’s birthday party part 2, I think I’ll check out a reading by author Elizabeth Hawes on her book “Camus, a Romance,” at Politics & Prose. From the sound of it, that book is like if I went and chatted it up with all of Hemingway’s relatives and then wrote a loveletter to him. (PS Happy 110th birthday Big Papa)

The weather this weekend looks to be pretty good, with some chance of a popup thunderstorm both days. What are our authors up to? Here’s the account…

Ben R: We’ll be celebrating my newfound return to the land of employment with a nice dinner over in Penn Quarter, probably either Zaytinya, Jaleo, Matchbox or Poste. If the weather holds well, we’ll probably be taking our cameras out down to Mount Vernon; they’ve got their National Treasure tour still going on, but more awesomely, the wheat harvest has begun and they’ll be doing demonstrations throughout the summer. If the weather tanks, then it’ll most likely be a “Washington DC movie night,” where we’ll pick a few movies out that were filmed / set in DC and proceed to either identify locations or snark them for poor representation.

Jenn: Who cares if the forecast is calling for evening rain this weekend? The W Hotel Washington is open, you should hit the POV rooftop bar (there is an enclosed section that’s superswank) and relax while the thunder rolls. Or check out H Street’s newest bar, Little Miss Whiskey’s, which finally opens after last week’s liquor license snafu. Hit a few crazy plays at the Capital Fringe Festival. Me? I finally bought a bike! I’m hitting the trails! So if you see a girl with a bike that’s way cooler than she is, constantly falling off and cursing, that would be me. Get out of the way before I get hurt.
