Rachel: I’m going back in time on Friday to the era in which I should have been living my early 20’s aka The Big Band Era. It’s easy. No flux capacitor needed, only fine clothing and dancing shoes. I’m headed to the Carlyle Club in Alexandria to see Doc Scantlin and the Imperial Palms Orchestra. Saturday, I’m taking a much needed shopping day in the Friendship Heights/Chevy Chase area with a final stop at the Borders (or Mazza Gallerie for a movie, I make these decisions on a whim at the last minute, it’s more exciting that way) on Wisconsin Avenue for an iced vanilla latte and a good read. What will I be reading? Either Treasure Island or Through The Looking Glass, I haven’t decided yet.) Sunday, I’ll be doing a giant internet search for Nats Fans in the area. Why? For a new feature series I’m working on for the summer! Consider yourself a die-hard resident of NatsTown? Know someone who considers themselves to be one of the most devoted Nats fans in the District? Drop me a line at rachel@welovedc.com — I’d love to hear your story! Then, finally, a day off on Monday! What will I be doing? Working on my musical chops to try and ready myself for my upcoming summer gigging. Any suggestions for covers are encouraged, add ’em to the comments if you like!

Paulo: For the long weekend I’m going to New York to browse art galleries in Chelsea but part of me will be wishing instead to see the Sackler’s visiting exhibition of Cambodian bronzes from Angkor. Also the LOST finale made me want to go to a Target, maybe the one in Columbia Heights.   Continue reading

Rachel: If you haven’t caught on by now, my weekends usually consist of one of two things (or both) — baseball and music. This weekend is no different. Friday and Saturday will be spent at good old Nationals Park to watch the Nats take on the worst team in the MLB this season aka the Baltimore Orioles. Then, before softball with the Near Misses in Glover Park on Sunday, there will be some good old music making in my apartment. I can only hope my neighbors like the Blues. Keep those fingers crossed for me.

Tiff: Saturday, it’s all about the Fiesta Asia Street Fair, especially the flash mob, but I may squeeze in a trip to the farm for more strawberries first. Sunday I’m probably going to be roaming around looking for jewelry to go with my costume for my dance studio’s upcoming recital. I’m thinking India Art & Craft and Eastern Market will be my first stops, but I’d love to hear your suggestions.   Continue reading

Jenn: I’ve been inspired by Shannon’s latest mythbusting to finally take my bike to the streets, so I’ll be touring the bike lanes Saturday morning (don’t laugh at me, my family nickname is Crash, so there’s a reason I’ve been sticking to the trails so far!). Later it’s over to Dana Ellyn’s open studio to see a preview of her “Banned Books” series – can’t wait to see her take on soma… Sunday is an extra-long bellydance rehearsal to get ready for our next performance on June 5 (yikes). At some point I’ll take advantage of the lovely weather promised to pick up some fish to grill and just soak up the zen.

Max: My weekend starts today for the most part, kicking it off with my very own hour of One Hour Photo from 1 to 2pm at the Katzen Arts Center.  Tonight I’ll be enjoying edible art at the Cuisine des Artistes, an annual event where local artists pair up with chefs to make beautiful, delicious food.  Friday night I’ll be checking out the opening of Marc Roman: Veritas Obscura at Flashpoint as well as the opening of Kathryn Cornelius: The Feeling of What Happens at the Curator’s Office.  Saturday afternoon starts with the peformance of Mary Coble at Conner Contemporary and then switches gears to sports later as I’ll be shooting the D.C. United match (where I might actually witness a win for once).  Sunday will thankfully be pretty low key, starting out with brunch of some sort, followed by a photo shoot with one of my favorite photographers, and then capped off with drinks at Buffalo Billiards in Dupont.

Jenn: Drinks + Theater = Fun! That’s my motto anyway. Saturday afternoon I’m hosting a small readers event at Bistrot Lepic (have no fear if you didn’t get one of the few spots available, as I’ll have a Drinks Special up on Thursday so you can all learn what we learned). You should take Mom to BRABO that afternoon for a complimentary rosé wine tasting with sommelier Leah Dedmon (2-4pm at the Butcher’s Block). That evening I’m attending the opening ofConstellation Theater’s Ramayana – from French wine to Indian mythology, should be a fascinating day. Sunday evening I’ll be at Theater J finding out what goes on at the Mikveh. Both reviews up next week. Cheers and bravo!

Dave: Weather, do me a favor and stay nice, ok? It’s sports weekend for this guy. Friday, the now ranked BC Alumni softball team (although I will leave out my diatribe on minimal participation in the Capital Alumni Network’s Coaches Poll leading to a lower-than-expected rank) looks to continue the season down on the mall; Saturday, I’m going on a good walk spoiled (i.e., Golf, in the words of Mark Twain) out at the Andrews Air Force Base West Course; and Sunday is a hopefully-cooler-than-last-weekend intramural soccer game. Then Sunday night will come and I’ll have to try to figure out (a) where my weekend went and (b) why I’m sore, but at least it’ll probably be over a brew atRagtime while watching the Red Sox take on the hated Yankees. Max: Since I’ll be taking Friday off this week, I’m going to pretend that Thursday is part of the weekend.  I’ll be going to the Freer and Sackler Galleries for Asia After Dark to eat, drink, and be cultured, before picking up some friends from DCA.  They’re both DC virgins which means I’ll be showing them all of the major monuments, a Smithsonian gallery or two, the National Cathedral, and of course visiting Lauriol Plaza for numerous margaritas and queso dip.  If they’re not burnt out we may check out some of the embassies during the Around the World Embassy Tour.  I can already tell you what I’ll be doing next weekend: absolutely nothing.

Rebecca: My weekend centers around the 85th running of Gold Cup taking place this Saturday at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia. If you’re not familiar with Gold Cup, it’s a day at the track with steeplechase races, Jack Russell Terrier races, corporate sponsored tents, tons of tailgatingcornholing, hat contests and UBER-preppy clothing. So Friday I’ll be resting up and making jello shots for Saturday’s bus ride over to the race. Saturday will be completely dominated by race day and debauchery. Sunday will involve heavy recovery and hydration activities with perhaps a trip to Z-Burger for some much need greasy, hangover-cure food. Continue reading

Rachel: Friday I’m heading to the batting cages at Cameron Run Regional Park in Alexandria with a friend to sharpen my eye for Sunday’s big game with my new-found softball team. We might wash the “workout” down with a stop at Dairy Godmother on the way back into the city, here’s to keepin’ those fingers crossed!  Saturday begins a rigorous rehearsal schedule that I’m going to attempt to throw myself into as the “Great Search for Summer Gigs” rages on with no sign of slowing down. As of right now I’ve got a July 3rd gig booked at the Columbia Heights Community Market, so that’s a start. And then Sunday is a baseball double-header of sorts. I’ll be spending some time at Nationals Park to help Screech celebrate his 5th birthday (yes, mascots have birthdays too!) and then racing back to Cleveland Park after the game to go play my in my own for my second week with the Glover Park Co-Ed Softball League. Go Misses!

Kirk: I’m going to spend Friday evening at a send off party for myself before I head to the Sudan for a month-ish to do some humanitarian work.  We’re planning on sampling some of Shelly’s Back Room’s scotch selection, particularly the Glenlivet 25 Year. On Saturday, I’m going with Shenandoah Brewing Co. to brew with Dad as a belated father’s day gift.  Sunday is going to be for church and relaxation, which probably means drinking beer on my porch all afternoon.

Katie: Now that the weather is nicer, that means the farmers markets are coming into full swing. This weekend marks the beginning of the full-fledged Arlington Farmer’s Market at Court House, and I’ll be there, reusable bags in hand. The first few weeks are generally plants, but I’m looking forward to May andstrawberry season! In the meantime, I’ll be eating farm fresh eggs, freshly made pastas and the beginnings of asparagus. As for the rest of the weekend? I’ll be spending time on U street getting my hair did at Bang, and sweet-talking WLDC author Jenn into hemming a dress I bought last fall to wear this summer.

Michael: This weekend I will be rocking out in the California desert at the Coachella Music Festival. But if I was here, I would definitely be going to the Positve Force-sponsored Titus Andronicus concert on Friday at St. Stephen’s Church. One, because Titus Andronicus’ new indie-rock concept album about the American Civil War is bloody inspired! Two, because seeing a show in a church is a really old school DC kind of this to do. Three, because Positive Force does great things for DC!   Continue reading

Jenn: This being the first weekend in several past that I’m actually not sick, I intend to have a blast. Friday night sees me at the opening of Synetic’s Metamorphosis, eager to find out how they tackle Kafka’s work about a man who wakes up one day as, well, a bug. Saturday is Sakura Matsuri Street Festival, to collect as many cute Japanese tees and teas as possible before hitting Yuri’s Night at the Capitol Skyline. Burlesque, art and mayhem! Sunday there’s no time to recover, following my usual bellydance class by meeting my fellow cyclistas for a ride on the Arlington Triangle. Yay spring!

Michael: This weekend has excellent concert bookends. On Friday, I’ll be catching British indie-rock legends, The Wedding Present, perform their seminal break-up opus ‘Bizarro’ in its entirety at the Black Cat ($15). On Sunday, I’ll be watching Red Sparowes when they migrate to Rock & Roll Hotel ($10).   Continue reading

Max: With the weather shaping up to be perfect for the weekend, there will likely be very little hibernating going on.  Friday night I’m super excited about Cherry Blast, Pink Line Project’s follow up to last year’s National Cherry Blossom Festival event.  This “creative extravaganza” will feature performance art, dance, film, fashion and more (and I’m happy that it’s only a few blocks from my house). I’ll be playing with my new camera at the United/Revolution home opener on Saturday.  And sadly, after brunch at Lauriol Plaza, I’ll be indoors on Sunday editing photos from the weekend.

Tom: Big weekend!  The best man from our wedding is in town, and it looks like we’re going to spend some time being tourists.  Friday after the cherry blossoms, we will be having one last cookout at our Arlington place before the big move into the city in two weeks.  Then Saturday it’s brunch and a birthday party for my cousin-niece Lillith in Falls Church.  Saturday is also a sports extravaganza double-header day, with the Nats finishing their pre-season against the Red Sox at Nats Park at 4pm, and then D.C. United will be opening their home season (tickets still available) against the Revolution.  That’s right: It’s DC vs Boston on Saturday!  Sunday is Easter, and that will mean the city’s restaurants will be a zoo.  Catch me at home, brunching it up with my sweetie after Church.   Continue reading

Katie: This weekend I’ll be wishing it was weather from last weekend. But no matter – I’ve got tons of things on my plate. I’m heading out to the Kite Festival to shoot some creative pictures with a photographer friend, and then stopping by the Court House Farmer’s Market for some farm fresh ingredients for a dinner I’m hosting on Sunday. Saturday night I’ll be kicking it with Washington Improv Theater at the FIST festival, and then heading out on 14th for drinks. Sunday, the day of rest and relaxation, I’ll be doing the opposite. Cathy and I are going to meet a new chef for a Capital Chefs feature, and then I’m taking advantage of a CityShopGirl promotion and getting some free eco-friendly makeup. Along the way, I might even get to partake in my current coveted and beloved brunch, Masa 14’s Latin/Asian fusion.

Tiff: I’ve got no real estate-related tasks this weekend, so for me it’s all about the cherry blossoms. The festival starts on Saturday, peak bloom starts on Sunday, and I am all over it. Will it be crawling with tourists? YES. Do I care? NOT AT ALL. Continue reading

Tiff: This weekend marks the first one in months where I will NOT be househunting! We’ve just gone under contract on a gorgeous house in Brookland (which means we’ll be the Brookland Bridges), so I will spend a chunk of my Sunday in my future neighborhood, not only for the home inspection but also to scope out 12th St. NE, the commercial heart of Brookland. Later that day, my dance studio is having their grand re-opening in a new, bigger space, so I’ll be checking out dance performances and demonstrations with them.

Rachel: This weekend is the celebration of my life (aka my birthday). My mom’s coming into town so I’m taking her on a whirlwind tour of all things awesome in DC. Friday kicks it off with lunch at Madhatter followed by dinner and a movie in Chinatown (dinner location suggestions are encouraged!). Saturday will be spent shopping in Georgetown, grabbing lunch at Martin’s Tavern, and grabbing a few cocktails at The Gibson before heading to Atomic Billiards for a rousing night of debauchery and dart throwing. Then, we’ll wrap up this celebration of life with my REAL birthday on Sunday by brunching at Chef Geoff’s and paroozing the National Mall in true tourist fashion.   Continue reading

Max: I’m headed up to NY this weekend to eat amazing food and check out some arty things like the Whitney Biennial.  However if I were staying in DC, I’d take advantage of the rainy forecast by watching some Oscar-winning movies and checking out Amy Lin’s work at Addison/Ripley in Georgetown.

Paulo: This Saturday is designated “DO TAXES ALREADY DAY” but after the taxes are done we will reward ourselves with a Japanese all-you-can-eat buffet at Matsutake in Ballston, followed by a trip to the National Gallery to see The Sacred Made Real and The Chester Dale Collection.

Samantha:  This weekend I will be attending a wedding in Philly on Friday and then heading to Scranton for their St. Paddy’s Parade on Saturday.  But — if I were to be in DC this weekend, I would most definitely be heading to E Street Cinema to catch a showing of An Education (I hear it is amazing).  I also would love to catch the photography exhibit of William Christenberry at the Hemphill Fine Arts Gallery on 14th Street.

Max: On Friday I’ll be helping two awesome friends celebrate their birthdays by drinking alcoholic beverages and checking out the Rogue Wave show at the 9:30 Club, and on Saturday…ah yes, Saturday.Well it’s going to be awesome.First I’ll be attending the WPA’s Art Auction Gala and if I’m lucky I’ll walk away with an awesome piece of art like I did last year. Later I’ll be sprinting over to Long View Gallery to hang with my photographer peeps at the fourth annual DCist Exposed Photography Show, the best show in town to buy awesome, affordable photography! Oh and Sunday…ugh. I’ll be preparing my taxes. Way to end on a low note.

Rachel: I’ll have to second Max on the birthday celebration front. I don’t know what it is, but a whole bunch of my friends have March birthdays. Friday night I’ll be partying it up at The Tombs in Georgetown only to follow that performance up with a night of friends and shuffle board at Atomic Billiards on Saturday. Sunday has the potential to be a laid back, movie kind of day. I haven’t been to the Uptown in awhile, so it’s likely I’ll make a visit to see the always dreamy Leo in Shutter Island.   Continue reading

The Snow Melter has been spotted. It exists! About time, right? Of course the orange wonder makes its grand appearance just as the temperature starts to rise and the snow starts to melt on its own. Go figure. On the positive side, Saturday was a picture perfect day. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky. That mixed with non-freezing temperatures and a serious lack of Thunder Snow is exactly what DC needed to wake up and get out after too many weekends spent hibernating. Continue reading

Rebecca: Friday I’m celebrating a friends birthday party with some sake bombs and hibachi at Matsutake Hibachi Steak & Sushi. Then we’ll head on back to the district for some drinkypoos at Martin’s. Saturday I’m on an early morning plane ride to California, so that’s where my DC weekend plans end. :(

John: Friday, I’ll be grabbing dinner at 3 Bar and Grill and then playing with my band Juniper Lane at IOTA in Arlington. Saturday will be spent mapping out the planting schedule and cleaning out an area in the garage where I can start seedlings and then enjoying a dinner date downtown. Sunday I’ll be taking a class with NRA Instructor Tina Wilson Cohen in Herndon on hand to hand and non-operational gun fighting.   Continue reading

Kirk: I’m leaving for the Olympics on Saturday, but I’m going to try to cram some weekend goodness in early, before I get out of town.  Tonight, I’m going to SOVA for some bluegrass, a bi-weekly, Thursday tradition that a friend introduced me to, recently.  Tomorrow, I’ll likely treat myself to a beer at the Saloon after work before finally going to Wisdom for the first time ever (I’m behind the times). Then it’s early to bed so I can be up for my 4am drive to BWI.

John: Friday night I’ll be sitting in early with No Second Troy at the 9:30 club for the Hotspur show. Then I promptly get in my car and trek down to Charlottesville for the “Hunting for Locavores” class all weekend. I’ll come back with new skills, a belly full of venison, and some great photos and experiences to share with you all.   Continue reading

What are we doing this weekend? SHOVELING, that’s what.

Max: Assuming the airline gods don’t cancel my flight tomorrow morning, I’ll be flying back to Cluster-Flake 2010,throwing snowballs at myself, building a snowman, making snow angels, and reveling in all of the snow activities that I’ve missed.  If you want me to throw your kid into a snowbank, I’ll do that too.  Once I’ve gotten that out of my system, I’ll be heading down to the Capitol Skyline Hotel Friday night for the Hearts & Skulls Valentine’s Party to watch horror movies, eat pizza, and listen to tunes pumped out by seven Fatback DJs.  On Saturday night I can’t wait to go to the opening of Empty Time, a painting and photography show at The Fridge curated by Trevor Young. All of the snow should be melted by Sunday, right?

Carl: Mostly I am going to sit down and cry because I thought I was through with this kind of weather when I moved away from Massachusetts four years ago. In between sobs, I hope to maybe get a good eggplant Parmesan sub from McLean Pizza and see if some elderly friends out in that area can use a bit of shoveling. Until then, I will be waiting for the plow, which might come or might not. At least I don’t have the burden of knowing whether Arlington County will come out here with a plow. That’s got to be a real hardship. Continue reading

Kirk: On Friday, I’m going to the Dogfish Head Alehouse in Falls Church to celebrate my tax return. My plans for Saturday are tenuous, at this point. Provided it doesn’t snow, I’m going to make another attempt at Mr. P’s Ribs and Fish, as my plans were foiled last weekend.  Sunday is, of course, Super Bowl time.  Hopefully I’ll be sitting at a friend’s house in front of a 60″ HD TV with my mouth agape.  Do I care who wins?  No. I hate the Colts and I think that the Saints are overrated. After the game, I’ll mourn the end of the football season and being preparing for fantasy baseball.

John: Friday night I’m going to grab a quick bite somewhere along U street (maybe Marvin) and then run over to play an early show with No Second Troy at the 9:30 Club (Hotspur is headlining, doors at 6, show over by 10:30). After that some drinking at Duffy’s and possibly a late night dance off at find somewhere to watch the SuperBowl and get my drink on. Kirkles: I’mma be taking some friends that recently moved to the area around to a few of my favorite haunts on U St., which means the Saloon, Gibson, and Ben’s Chili Bowl.  I might try to convince them that we need to go to Wisdom, as I’ve never been and have been meaning to get over there for some time.  On Saturday, provided we’re not snowed in, I’m going to Mr. P’s Ribs and Fish in Brentwood, for some good, southern BBQ out of the back of an old school bus.  Supposedly, the ribs are to die for.  Sunday will be my recovery day, but I plan on going to the Eden Center for some sweet, sweet Vietnamese food.

Rachel: Friday night is going to be AWESOME! Why? Back to the Future is playing at E Street Cinema as part of their Midnight Madness series (which, in case you couldn’t figure out, means that they’re rolling the movie at the stroke of midnight). Saturday I’m making my first trip to Cedar to meet up with some of the folks from Leopold Brothers distillery to sample a whiskey I hadn’t heard of until this week — New York APPLE Whiskey — and then wrapping out the night rehearsing for my upcoming gig at Chief Ike’s Mambo Room. Sunday I’ll be spending some quality time with Madeleine Albright at the Newseum hearing all about her new book “Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat’s Jewel Box.” Then MAYBE I’ll grab a few winks and Z’s … but that’s a giant maybe. Tom: I’m back in class once again, so I have a feeling that this weekend will be all about reading books and writing responses.  I do know, however, that Saturday night I’ve been invited by Chevy to go test drive a Volt over at RFK Stadium, so tune in on Sunday to see my impressions of driving a “greener” hybrid around DC.  Sunday afternoon we’re off on a tour of Petworth, courtesy of The Prince himself, as we continue our hunt for a new place to live.

John: After a week out of town in the Studio, I’ll be back to hit up some shows and some grub. Friday night there’s a benefit concert for Haiti at the IOTA Club and Cafe in Arlington. Saturday night I’ll be hitting up dinner at Ulah Bistro and then follow that by checking out Thievery Corporation at the 9:30 Club on their five (?) night stand there. Continue reading
