Max: Friday night I’ll be checking out the opening at Flashpoint for Adam de Boer’s “Finca”.  Saturday I’ll be flipping through the pages of the second issue of Worn Magazine at a preview party in Georgetown, and possibly throwing my underwear on stage at the Super Diamond show at 9:30.  Sunday I’ll be popping Advil and trying to get “Sweet Caroline” out of my head.

Brittany: My birthday falls on Saturday, so it is a pretty festive week for me. First stop is at Urban Style Lab. Jen did an amazing job overhauling my faded-out California “ombre” color and her sister Liana will be trimming my fringe this weekend so I can actually see what happens, even if I cannot remember. There will be birthday drinks with a couple of friends at The Gibson. Dress code is suits and bow-ties for the boys. Quelle adorbs, right? Sunday is the real party, though, featuring my amazing friends, djs, day drinking, and such, followed by an after-party on my friend’s gorgeous Columbia Heights rooftop. Monday, one of my fave local causes, 826DC is having a fundraiser at my fave bar, The Passenger, and Tuesday is the sure-to-be-rad Worn Magazine Issue 2 Party at U Hall. Continue reading

Dave: While Friday night is dedicated to a brief happy hour out in Columbia Heights with a few others of the media world at Meridian Pint, I’m probably most excited for another weekend gig down at The Rookery with my band, The Greensides. In addition to the normal level of acoustic rocking you can expect, we’re also really please to have an outstanding opener: comedian Christian Hunt. And if you’ve never seen the Capital City Showcase host perform, this is as much a treat as anything. Once all of that winds down, Sunday is about recovery, but at least it’ll be during a field trip for tacos in Virginia to recognize the birthday of one of WLDC’s own, the great Tom Bridge.

John: This Friday, come check out my band Juniper Lane, headline IOTA Club and Cafe in Arlington. We’ll be playing with No Second Troy and it’ll be a fun night of rock and roll. We’ll be playing almost all of the material from our new record. Saturday I’m going out to Bull Run Farm to do a cider pressing as part of my Community Supported Agriculture program. Then I’ll be finishing up some raised beds and doing the fall clean up and winterizing and hanging out with my lady. Ahh fall! Continue reading

Michael: This weekend I plan on recovering from seven nights in a row of concerts by going to more concerts. On Friday night, I hope to make my way back up to B’More to catch the return of Buzzov*en at Ottobar. On Saturday night I am finally (FINALLY!) going to see Teenage Fanclub in concert at 9:30 Club. And on Sunday I’ll be catching the Amtrak to NYC for the rescheduled Chapterhouse reunion show at Bell House.

Brittany: On Friday, I will be stopping by the first Portraits After 5 at the National Portrait Gallery – maybe I can even get a better author photo at the “pop-up photobooth studio.” This is the first Friday of a new month, which also makes it Think of England time at the Black Cat. Think of England is “a modern ladies’ music happy hour,” and what I am if not a modern lady? For dinner – and to continue the drinking with awesome autumnal/pumpkin/Oktoberfest beers – there will be Autumn Fest at one of the Pizzerias Paradiso. Part of Saturday will be spent in Virginia for the All Access Fashion events – but any actual shopping I do is more likely to happen at Crafty Bastards. Continue reading

Michael: This weekend is jam packed with more good music than John Peel’s iPod. Thursday night, I’m catching Caribou at the Black Cat. Friday, it’s up to B’More for the unexpected but welcome return of Atari Teenage Riot. If it wasn’t for ATR’s return, I would be catching the Merzbow/Pinhas live collaboration at the French Embassy. Saturday, Virgin FreeFest takes over the area, where I’ll be catching everyone from Sleigh Bells to LCD Soundsystem. If I survive til Sunday night, I’ll be taking in Shonen Knife’s classic Japanese indie-rock at Rock & Roll Hotel. Look for a slew of reviews covering all of these great shows on We Love DC next week!

Rebecca J: I’m headed to Thunder Burger Bar for a Friday happy hour full of delicious burgers and tasty micro brews. Personally, I’m looking forward to tasting Coney Island “Sword Swallower” from Saratoga Springs, NY. The Saturday tradition of soccer in the morning and College Football continues. Luckily this week’s Mizzou and Notre Dame matches are at 2pm and 3pm, so I’ll actually have a post-game night life this week. Sunday, I have a dreadfully early soccer match, but at least that will have me up and out of the house, so I can hit up the Dupont Farmers Market. After that I believe a nap will be in order, before heading to Breadsoda for their Sunday happy hour specials, a tasty Reuben and some NFL action. Continue reading

Dave L.: Since I have no crazy, 22-hour trips to Boston planned and my alma mater is on its bye week, I’m going to take advantage of plenty of things around the city before ducking out of dodge for vacation. Friday evening seems like a great time to go find a patio bar since the weather is looking exceptional. Maybe somewhere on the Hill? Saturday stands to be a little more planned, at least as much as chaos can be organized, with an End of Skeeson party on tap for another successful season of United Skeeball down at Rosslyn’s Continental. Team name for everyone who loves puns: Snakes on A Lane 3 – the Skeelogy.

Michael: Big music weekend in DC! Thursday night, I’ll be mixing it up from the DJ booth in the Industrial/Electronica room at REVOLUTION at FUR. Friday night, I’ll finally be seeing No Age in concert along with their impressive openers Holy Fuck. This is an awesome double bill! Then the DC Sonic Circuits Festival kicks off on Saturday night with an ultra-rare performance by Magma. On Sunday the experimental music fest continues down in Fairfax, where I’ll be trying to survive 12-straight hours of improv noise-jams. Wish me luck! Continue reading

Rebecca J.: I can’t believe it’s the weekend already! I’m not complaining. It’s A-mazing. Friday I’m off to the freshly opened Carmine’s with the WeLoveDC gang to mow on some veal picata, stuffed artichokes and rigatoni country style. Having been to the Carmine’s in NYC, I’ll be ready to roll myself out of there, as their family style servings are of epic proportions. Fortunately, on Saturday I’ll be working off the previous night’s carbo-fest with a WAWSL soccer game and then a stop for some fresh produce at the Georgetown Farmers Market. As College Football kicked off last weekend, with stellar wins by both Missouri and Notre Dame, I’ll be tuned to the second week of match ups. Sunday, a solid sleep in will be in order, after which an egg, cheese and bacon croissan’wich from Breadsoda suits my fancy. No worries heart, I’ll be working that off during my evening footie match.

Kirkles: On Friday, I’ll be hitting up Carmine’s for dinner with some of the WLDC crew followed by a nerdy laser tag night with friends at Ultrazone Laser Tag (I haven’t played laser tag since I was 11.  I hope it’s still awesome). Saturday, I’m going to Mi Tierra Market for some Latin American brunch and then I will spend the entire afternoon watching football.  On Sunday, I’ll go to church and then spend that entire afternoon watching football, as well.  I’m happy football is back. Samantha: I love spending holiday weekends at home.  You don’t have to stress over travel plans and delays, and instead get to enjoy your precious free time to the max.  Friday night I have dinner plans to go to POV and I can’t wait to catch the fantastic view (and good food, of course).  Saturday I will be heading over to once again see the Chuck Close exhibit for FREEand then will most likely get some frozen yogurt from FrozenYo.  Sunday I will be scooping up some antique finds in Leesburg at The Old Lucketts Store.  And on Monday I will probably take a nice long walk around the monuments, I mean what could be better?

Tom: Wooo, long weekend time!  It’s an extra special treat after spending last week along the Oregon Coast and with my family in California.  After all that, I need to be refreshed on why it is that I love DC so much.  Look for me on Barracks Row this weekend, and at Eastern Market, and maybe even over at Star and Shamrock on Monday.  I’ll also be working to turn my Brookland back yard into a proper garden this fall, so a trip to Garden District, and probably the Home Depot, are in order to get things underway for my planter boxes.  Of course, it’s also potato season at the farm, so I’ll likely be out for Pancakes & Potatoes at Great Country Farms on Saturday, and I’m hearing tell that there’s a distillery open in Loudoun County making their own rye whiskey…   Continue reading

Michael: This weekend begins my great cross-country rock concert odyssey. On Friday, I’ll be catching the incomparable Iggy & The Stooges in Atlantic City. On Saturday, it’s a quick flight to Minneapolis for the Amphetamine Reptile Records 25th Anniversary Bash. With this trip booked months ago and the Glenn Beck nonsense coming up, you really couldn’t pay me to stay in DC this weekend. But if for some catastrophic reason my travel/concert plans fail and I survive the resultant suicide attempts, I would most likely be seen at DC9’s end-of-summer Fez & Mustache Party because I am continually baffled by this Balkan/Klezmer trend and I like to observe it in full-force whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Rebecca: Friday, I have the day off from work, so I’m heading to the Textile Museum to finally catch the exhibit Art by the Yard: Women Design Mid-century Britain. Afterwards, I’ll hit up Maddy’s for a beer and some lunch. Saturday, I’ll peruse my neighborhood for yard sales where I hope to pick up some new accents for both my wardrobe and apartment. Saturday evening, some quite mixed drinks at Bourbon sounds like a quality idea. Sunday, I’ll be taking it easy during the day because I have a late afternoon footie match, so I’ll likely hit up Chef Geoff’s for brunch and then take a nap on the lawn of the National Cathedral.

Kirkles:  This is my birth-weekend, so I’m starting things off at Jazz in the Garden, followed immediately by the Michigan Rare Craft Brewing Blowout at the Big Hunt.  Saturday, I’ll be celebrating with friends in Loudoun County at my fifth annual birthday kegger, taking a break to draft one of my fantasy football teams late that evening. Sunday, after church, I’ll probably pop over the the Georgetown Flea Market to continue a month long, half-hearted search for a new dining room table. Continue reading

Rebecca J: Friday I’m headed over to the SpyMuseum with fellow WeLoveDCers to participate in TBD’s SpyInTheCity challenge where the kings and queens of the DC blog world/scene will be crowned. After I run around Chinatown like a chicken with my head cut off, I’ll be stopping in at the Iron Horse and Gordon Biersch to continue, what will hopefully, be our victory celebration. Saturday I’ll be having my first Bistro Du Coin experience and I can’t wait. From what I’ve heard there’s terrific beer/wine, food and ambiance..aaahhhh….gotta love the weekends. Sunday I’ll hit up the Dupont Farmer’s Market for some super in season peaches, corn and sunflowers. It’s one of the last empty city weekends, so the rest of the day will be spent enjoying the relative peace and quiet.

Michael: This weekend is jam packed with good music at 9:30 Club. On Friday, the 9:30 Club is the place to be for innovative electronic music with Crystal Castles and company. On Saturday, it’s a punk-ska skank-fest with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. And on Sunday, The English Beat and Bad Manners invade with a night full of 2-Tone ska madness! Continue reading

Darpino: Big music weekend in DC coming up! On Saturday, I’ll be at the 9:30 Club watching Public Enemy perform their masterpiece “Fear of a Black Planet.” On Sunday, it’s over to the Rock & Roll Hotel to catch Canadian electro-pop heroes, Dragonette. In other news, the wrecking crew and I will be headed out to catch an afternoon showing of
Stallone’s mucho macho latest, “The Expendables.”

John: It’s a countrified weekend. Friday Night i’m stuck playing a cover show but if I weren’t I’d be enjoying some nice local beer at Vintage 50 out in the wilds of Leesburg. Saturday will be spent playing around in the WeLoveDC DirtLab near Oatlands and followed by a picnic dinner evening and Twilight Polo at Great Meadows south of Middleburg. Sunday we’ll grab brunch/lunch and wrap up the countrification at Market Salamander in Middleburg. Continue reading

Jenn: This weekend is all about the Dog Days of August in my ‘hood, sponsored by the MidCity Business Association and taking place all along the 14th and U Street corridors. From the Studio Theatre Prop & Costume Sale, to boutique fashion sidewalk sales including Redeem, Nana, Lettie Gooch and Treasury, this is always a fun event to wander up and down featuring sales of 70-80%. Many of the local restaurants will have specials too – like Marvin’s rooftop posicles, Cork Market’s donut and lemonade stand, and ACKC’s tropical beach party. Show the love to one of DC’s most vibrant communities, and get some sweet sale action for yourself too!

John: I’m taking a much-needed break this weekend and going somewhere (really, I don’t know) with my girlfriend on a trip planned by Magical Mystery Tours. All we know is that there will be a beach and that we show up at DCA at oh dark thirty on Friday morning. If I wasn’t mystery vagabonding, I’d be heading to DJ Lil’e’s 80s Prom Night at the Black Cat Mainstage on Friday night, with a bite to eat at Bar Pilar. Sunday Brunch would probably involve Bacon at Eola or a Cowboy Breakfast with a live bluegrass band at Fireflies in Del Ray. Something awesome about bluegrass and breakfast.   Continue reading

Michael: This weekend I am hitting the road. Friday, I will be in the second row at Radio City Music Hall in NYC to see one of my all time-favorite bands, Spiritualized, performing one of my all time favorite albums, “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space”, in its entirety. It’s the only stateside show where they are doing this, so I am mighty stoked. The rest of the weekend will be a blur of Jersey shore traffic as I fight my way to Cape May for a wedding. If I were in town, I would probably find a way to sneak into the sold out Deadmau5 show at the 9:30 Club on Friday. I am afraid seeing him Wednesday and Thursday just won’t be enough.

Dave L.: I, too, will be out of the District for the weekend, enjoying the nuptials of two of my closest friends from college up in sunny Chatham, New Jersey. If I were to be around, I probably would have worked my way over to Nationals Park for a game or two, or potentially even gone up to Baltimore to catch the friendly between Manchester City and Inter Milan. Rachel: Well, I’m fresh off a stint in Nashville to audition for American Idol. It didn’t go my way but I learned a lot and am ready to rock out harder than ever before after being “cut” from the program before ever seeing any air-time. I’ve got a gig booked for Saturday night at the Tonic Lounge (located at 2036 G Street NW, near the Foggy Bottom Metro). I’m not the only entertainment on tap, several artists from the DC area will take the stage too. So grab a drink at the bar, stay for the tunes, and if you’re a Glee fan I guarantee a solid new cover added to my repertoire from the second half of last season’s show. Not gonna tell you what it is, you’ll have to stop by to hear it. Show starts at 8 p.m. with a $5 cover. I’ll also have albums on sale with proceeds going to the National Kidney Foundation in honor of my late father who received a heart transplant in 1999. Hope to see you there! It should be a rockin’ good time.

Patrick: Weeks of no social life ends this weekend. Noises Off! opens this Saturday at Keegan Theatre in Dupont Circle. As the stage manager I’ll be in the booth playing the role of incompetent sound technician #1. No seriously, come see the show and watch the actors freak out at me during Act III. The show will run through August so I hope to see everybody there eventually. While I’m running the show I’ll also be trying to figure out where to eat and drink before and after performances- anybody have any suggestions for places I should check out around 17th Street?

John: I’ll be playing two shows this weekend. Friday at Ri-Ra in Arlington with my cover band and Saturday at Tarara Winery north of Leesburg with Juniper Lane. Tarara has a “Saturday night summer series” with different bands playing from 6-9pm almost every weekend. Saturday afternoon I’ll be digging in the garden and fighting off groundhogs in a true Caddyshack approach to pest control. If I wasn’t so engaged with nature, I’d spend my afternoon down at Biergarten Haus on H Street enjoying a slice of Bavaria in my own proverbial backyard.

Rachel: I’m headed to Nashville for the weekend to audition for the 10th season of American Idol. Is the show a joke now that Simon and Paula’s gone plus the fact it’s the show’s tenth season? Maybe. Sure. But I’m doing it anyway. If I wasn’t, you better believe I’d spend the whole weekends watching Nats away games on TV or online. Wish me luck? Here’s to hoping I can put DC on the map via a Fox reality television show going into its first decade? Why not? Someone has to, right?

Kirk: I’m off to Mann’s Choice, PA this weekend, where the air is cooler, but if I were in town, I’d probably go to the Strasburg game tomorrow night,  Red Derby for their brunch (good sammiches and $2 drinks!) on Saturday morning and then find some pool to spend the rest of the weekend in.  Screw heat.

Rachel: Stephen Strasburg takes the mound Friday night at Nationals Park, so I’ll be watching that either at the park or elsewhere. Haven’t made a final decision just yet. Then it’s on to a two-day two-games softball “double header” with the Glover Park League at Guy Mason Field Saturday and Sunday. Will be doing my best to get some quality relaxation time in while I’m at it too. It’s been a busy week.   Continue reading

John: Friday night I’ll be playing a show at Whitlow’s with my cover band, “Hang the DJ” and then heading down to Yorktown, Virginia for a Norman-Rockwell-painting-esque Fourth of July weekend with my girlfriend and family. If I were staying in town, I’d head down to the Capitol and watch A Capitol Fourth, which is also broadcast on PBS. With the NSO, The Old Guard Howitzer Salute Battery (what makes fireworks better? ARTILLERY!) and a string of great performers, it’s always a fun, patriotic show. I worked the show for about 6 years and you can see my photos from 2007 and 2006.

Rachel: What’s more American than spending 4th of July weekend centered around a ball park? I can think of no better way to celebrate our Nation’s birthday than that! Friday I’ll be at Nationals Park watching game two of the Mets series. Then Saturday is the big day! I’m debuting my new EP with a live set starting at 1 p.m. at the Columbia Heights Market Place. Proceeds from the new EP’s sales will be donated in honor of my late father to the National Kidney Foundation and Donate Life campaign. Of course, Sunday’s the big kahuna — Nationals baseball in the Nation’s capital on the Nation’s birthday (you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to write that sentiment down for others to see. It brings joy to my eyes!) This will be my third 4th of July Nationals game, they always make for a good time. The game will be followed by the Uncle Sam Jam on the South West waterfront. Party on, America! Continue reading

Carl: Friday night may see me going to hear some jazz at the sculpture garden, where I will no doubt enjoy a cooler of malt liquor with fellow writer Katie. Saturday I will be sleeping late (likely waking up around 7:30), possibly finishing some yard work for an elderly friend, and then going to my friend Don‘s birthday party. He’s not the elderly guy I do yard work for but I suppose I should offer. On Sunday I might meet a friend for brunch and later head off to a cookout in the Westover neighborhood. If I get there early, there’s always the Lost Dog Cafe, where I can cool off and sip some suds while I await the appointed hour.

Max: I’m headed up to Philly this weekend for a much needed escape from Dodge, but if I were sticking around the District I would hit up the not to be missed show at Flashpoint, Jeffry Cudlin: BY REQUEST – it’s going to be the off the hook.  I’d also check out the show opening at Conner Contemporary Saturday night, 32 Under 32, featuring 32 up and coming local artists that are under the age of 32.  Lastly, I’d stay indoors as much as possible because this lovely weather is supposed to continue throughout the weekend.  Fall can’t get here soon enough for me.   Continue reading

Dave L.: Unsurprisingly, I’m still obsessed with the World Cup. With the second game for the Yanks at 10 a.m. on Friday, I’m all in for a morning break and loud cheering as the U.S. plays its second match against Slovenia. Saturday will be a brunch with some visiting family – recommendations always appreciated, in the city or in the Commonwealth – before my competitive skeeball team, Snakes on a Lane, laces up for the playoffs of United Skeeball’s third skeeson at Continental down in Rosslyn.

Paulo: I’ll be underwater over the weekend (literally), but back in town I’d love to go see GermanMaster Drawings from the Wolfgang Ratjen Collection, a relatively fresh acquisition by the National Gallery of Art, covering a millieu of artistic eras from the baroque to the romantic/impressionist. I especially look forward to seeing the waterproof coat of General Moltke. Continue reading

Max: Friday night I’ll be nerding it up with the best of them at the DC Digital Capital Week kickoff party.  From 9PM to 3AM, Blagden Alley will be the place to be in DC for networking, art viewing, music listening, and beer drinking ($20).  On Saturday I will shed my usual attire and pretend that I have class by donning a costume for the Seersucker Social (fingers crossed for cooperative weather).  Assuming I’m not run over by a fellow seersuckerer or bonked on the noggin by a croquet mallet, I might snap a few pictures of the pride parade and then help a friend celebrate the big 3-0.  Sunday will (as usual) be filled with photo editing and napping.

Dave: You know, a week of Strasburg-mania has me completely in the mood to get out there and find my own Field of Dreams. So, for a great sports weekends I’ll kick it off Friday morning, watching the opening matches of the World Cup at Public Bar ($3 Peronis ain’t a bad way to start the day, and it is, after all, noon somewhere). Friday evening, I’ll be out at Upton Hill Regional Park, shaking off the cobwebs of a few rainouts and back in the cages before a Saturday tripleheader of softball against a few of our rivals out at Cabin John. (Also, please note, regardless of the St. George’s Cross hanging by my desk, please note, I will also be cheering for the Yanks when they face the Three Lions).

Kirkles: I’m going to live out my shame by attending Friday evening’s Nats game against the Reds and sitting in $30 seats that I bought a few weeks ago. Later that evening I’ll be taking a beer loving Friend from out of town to visit Churchkey, which I think will blow his mind.  On Saturday, I’m going to host a grill brunch with some homies where, you guessed it, I’ll grill breakfast foods.  Should be interesting.  Sunday will feature church, followed by more drinking with said out of town friend. I’m not sure where yet.

Shannon: This weekend I’ll be running the Race for the Cure out on the Mall on Saturday morning (just a heads up that Metro opens at 5 AM for the event, and traffic downtown is likely to be crazy).  After the run, I’ll head to Dupont for brunch and unlimited mimosas at Madhatter, then stroll around the neighborhood for the Dupont-Kalorama Museum Walk.  Sunday I’m heading down to Hains Point for a bike ride and some swimming, because the DC Triathlon is just 2 short weeks away!
