Hurricane Irene: She came; she rained; she left. While not the harbinger of the End of Days, as every weatherman led us to believe, I do think it hit us with the strength of a “Category Nuisance” storm. So enough to mess up plans and make a bummer of a weekend. But we got through it and that’s what counts. From everyone in the We Love DC family, we hope you have power at your home and no tree in/on your car. And though you probably don’t want to, here’s a look at what some people saw this weekend. My blood is too thick for this humidity: my mind boils, I rant and rave, and I’m unable to properly explain myself. And I channel Hunter S. Thompson. I moved to DC before I knew what the summers were like; heatwave or not, I boil like a potato in this climate. But everyone who loves hanging idly around a swamp going to fairs and farmers markets, let’s reminisce. Welcome to yesterday, DC. And the day before. And Friday, when the Redskins started back up and squashed the Steelers in their first preseason game. Busy weekend around town – let’s do this thing!

Here comes August! I’ve got to say, where did July go…and June for that matter? But let’s forget about the unforgiving grinding of time, and focus on what really matters this week: Shark Week. I’m not really a devotee of this particular form of clever summer programming, but I do like to say this quote: “Live every week like it’s Shark Week” (Tracy Morgan, 30 Rock). On that particular piece of questionable advice, let’s see the sights of the Flickr pool from the weekend. Enjoy! Continue reading

I’ve watched the movie 1776, and I think we need to celebrate July 5th like the Founding Fathers did. That is, drink amazing amounts of fermented molasses, pat ourselves on the back for plagiarizing the ideas of John Locke the day before, and get very little done at work. While you think over the notion of celebrating this day traditionally, take a minute (or thirty) and check out the “All American,” extra large, Flashback from the three day weekend.

Something to note: You’ll notice an amazing lack of firework pictures. That’s because our group was flooded with so many awesome shots of the fireworks, we decided to do a dedicated Fireworks Flashback. It’ll run later today, so get your fireworks photos into the We Love DC Flickr group if you want them considered! Continue reading

Why didn’t anyone tell me there would be a Civil War ballon on the Mall this weekend? I hear some other things happened around the city in the past few days, but this is the only thing that caught my attention. And I missed it. It’s not everyday that a Civil War ballon gets inflated on the Mall, and I was not around to see it. Please excuse me while I go sulk in my corner; here are some photos of the weekend to keep office work away for a bit longer.

Here we are, again. I don’t know about the rest of you, but there was a small part of me hoping, against all logic, to be kicking it in heaven instead of being at work this week. I’m taking this as a sign that I’ve been chosen to teach you all how to be good people. So, do unto others as you would have them do unto you; share and share alike; be sure to tip your waiters and waitresses; and, for God’s sake, please use your turn signals! Now, go fourth and preach the word…but first, check out the sights of the weekend. Continue reading

Considering the dire predictions of massive, weekend-destroying rain, the days ended up being quite nice. Agree or disagree, we have some great flashback photos to show that at least some people found great things to do. Click on the link below and see for yourself….though stay away from the Vegemite sandwiches in the last photo. I’ve had the stuff; not the best thing to come from the Land Down Under.
