One of the best times of my Monday is when I get to scan our Flickr pool for shots taken over the weekend. I never, ever know what’s going to turn up or what great things our contributors drop into the mix. Even though many times there are photos from the “well-known” events (like this past weekend’s Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure), it’s always a treat to find photos of other events, scenes, and discoveries our readers find across the weekend.

So enjoy this extra-big Flashback today, as our contributors were out in force and made it really hard for me to decide what to put into today’s roundup. Thanks to all our local photographers! And being a WeLoveDC photo contributor is really quite easy: join Flickr and start dropping local photos into our group! Maybe you’ll see one of your shots here one day…

Soldier, rest! Thy warfare o’er,
Sleep the sleep that knows not breaking,
Dream of battled fields no more.
Days of danger, nights of waking.

-Sir Walter Scott

Many thanks to all of our active servicemen and women, reservists, and veterans who put their lives on the line for this country every day. While we enjoy the Memorial Day holiday (which around here is the official start to “tourist season”), we do so in the knowledge that we live in a free country protected by those who volunteer their lives to pay that price. So with a heartfelt thanks, we salute you for your dedication and service.

Linger just a while longer before heading into the shortened work day with some great photographic captures from the weekend. Continue reading

Good Monday to you all! After being gone all week lost in the Smoky Mountains, I was wondering what I might have missed up here in “civilization” and I happily indulged myself checking out what our local photogs posted to our Flickr pool. Here’s a sampling of what caught my eye from the past few days; use it to enjoy some moments of sanity as your work week commences!

The high temps, thickening humidity and threat of rain didn’t stifle our area photographers as they roamed the streets, looking for “just the right shot” to share with all of you. And we’re happy to redirect your daydreaming back to the weekend while your body catches up to the fact that yes, it is indeed Monday.

Weekend Flashback: Cherry Blossoms! 4/2 – 4/4/10

While the peak time may have already passed for the blooms this year, it didn’t deter the crowds along the Tidal Basin. More crowded than the last few years, the blossoms were the key attraction once again as spring fully exploded all over the DC area.

Many area photographers were out and about – as evidenced by the huge number of blossom-related photos in our Flickr pool – with many participating in an early morning photowalk on Saturday. So if you missed all the touristy fun this past weekend, we here at WeLoveDC have you covered. Enjoy some blossom-themed photos from our special Cherry Blossom flashback.

Already tired of the gray, icky drizzle to start out the work week? Well, did you know that the National Cherry Blossom Festival kicked off this weekend with the Smithsonianl Kite Festival? Lots of sunshine and kites dominated the early part of the weekend before yesterday’s gray settled in, so let’s ignore the wetness outside and revel in some great photos from area photographers.

Oh, and take heart – this weekend’s looking to be fabulous!

Hard to believe only six weeks ago we were buried under a ton of the white stuff… These past several days have atoned for it, that’s for sure. What a great way to kick off the official arrival of spring!

If you’re looking for some distractions from all the hoopla on the Hill today, we’ve got you covered. Check out some snapshots from the weekend, just after the jump.

Dried out yet? Hmmm, probably not, considering today’s forecast.

Still, despite the wet weather (at least it wasn’t snow!), opportunities abounded for photos and happily, our local photogs obliged. So while you’re settling in for another wet Monday, indulge in a look back at the weekend through some other perspectives.

What was that gigantic, heat producing orb up in the sky this weekend? The sun is back! Oh how we’ve all missed it so. The weather report tells us that come mid-week, we may be seeing some sundress weather. That means comfort for the ladies and eye candy for the fellas. It also means patio dining is back! So get ready to pull those leather jackets out of storage, throw on those shades, and head outside for a more comfortable climate to wander around in. Forget winter. Soon, it will be nothing more than a distant memory. Continue reading

A weekend without any snowfall? I still don’t believe it myself. The city is starting to thaw. The mounds of snow resembling Mount Everest are melting into small, manageable to climb hills (even Mount St. Fenty seems to be decreasing in size). And — best of all — the sun’s chosen to peek its pretty head once more. So, enjoy the rising temperatures and lack of freak snow storms. Here are a few snapshots of DC’s thawing out process to tide you over while you wait for all that powdery white stuff to disappear from our streets and sidewalks. Continue reading
