Real World Move In Pt. 2

Considering the false alarm from earlier this week, you can take this report for what it’s worth: @Realworlddcnewz says that RW cast members are moving in right.  Supposedly, a pair of good looking, 20 somethings was seen bringing bags into the house at 2000 S St.  I’ll be heading down that way in a few hours to confirm, but for now you’ll have to rely on twitter or go down and see for yourself.

July Concert Preview

Here comes July! As you consider going to concerts in the dead of summer, I just want to impart a few words of wisdom: you can’t always count on the A/C at some of DC’s music venues. I’m thinking specifically of Rock and Roll Hotel, where it is nearly impossible to go to a show without being overwhelmed by how freaking hot and sweaty it gets. So dress accordingly, and maybe consider an outdoor nighttime concert with some breathing room to avoid getting a faceful of sweaty pit from that guy shouting “Woooo!” next to you. Continue reading

Care for a Little Green Rock n’ Roll?

What do Zipcar and Rock n’ Roll Hotel have in common? This evening I got an e-mail from Zipcar with the subject line: You’re invited to the First Ever Zipcar Talent Show. Intrigued,  I opened it to find out that Tuesday June 30th, Zipcar will be putting on its own talent show at the “World Famous” Rock n’ Roll Hotel in the increasingly popular H St NE neighborhood of DC.

A quick visit to RnR Hotel’s online calendar reveals that Zipcar has held 3 auditions in June at its DC offices for “performers, singers, dancers, comedians, magicians, ventriloquists, contortionists, etc.” The most impressive acts as decided by zipjudges will perform tomorrow night. Doors open at 6pm and entry is free for Zipcar members, $5 for non-members. Supposedly going to have free food and drink for all. Might be worth checkin’ out! Only question I have is why Zipcar only gave 24 hrs of notice…..that doesn’t make much sense.

Real World Update 2

‘House’

A week after the original projection for the RW cast move in date, there’s still no sign of them.  The house looks like it’s more or less ready to go.  I stopped by on Saturday and there was some minor construction happening inside, but the exterior of the house looked to be in ship-shape; there was even a grill and patio set out on the porch.  There hasn’t been any official word on when the cast will arrive, but I suspect that it’ll be some time this week.  I’m betting that MTV wants to have them in before the 4th so that they can get some nice, iconic shots of fireworks over the monuments.  We’ll have to wait and see, though.

It’s Our Party, We’ll <3 DC If We Wanna

Hey! The coolest people in DC all have plans on Wednesday night, July 1st. They’ll all be hanging out at the Science Club, celebrating the first birthday of this here blog. And you’ll be there, right? Of course you will, cause you’re a mighty cool kid!

In addition to some cheap libations, you’ll get to pose in our hawt photo booth, donate to Bread in the City, and scarf the unofficial food of We Love DC, the veggie burger. You’ll also get to meet our super cool authors (most of whom will be rocking a color variation of this tee shirt so you can find us in the crowd) and chat with us about anything you want. More than anything, though, you’ll get to celebrate your love of our fine District.

So sharpie that onto your calendar. 7 p.m., one week from today. Make it happen!

Real World Update

The Real World watch has officially begun.  Word on the street was that filming was supposed to begin this weekend, but it looks like that the actual date may be a bit later.  I swung by the RW house on Saturday to try to catch a glimpse of the incoming cast, but found that the building was still in the final stages of renovation.  From all appearances, furniture was being brought in and the final touches were being put on the aesthetics.  We’ll have to wait and see when the soon to be drunken co-eds officially arrive, unless they managed to sneak in yesterday.

In the mean time, WaPo’s “Going Out Gurus” have compiled a handy list of Real World friendly bars for all of us to avoid.  Cobalt, Russia House, the Shadow Room and Town make the list, along with a few others.  Take note and beware.

Obama at Dairy Godmother!

Obama hit the Del Ray creamery (well, custard-er-ry, or whatever you call it) Dairy Godmother this afternoon. Good thing I snuck in last weekend for the Bordeaux Cherry,  ’cause after seeing what happened to Ray’s Hell Burgers, lord knows Dairy Godmother will be a packed house for the rest of the summer.

Dairy Godmother tweets “President Obama and his daughters just left. Pres. had a hot fudge sundae and daughters had vanilla cone and brownie sundae with sprinkles.” and “Malia had a brownie sundae with a housemade brownie, van.custard, hot fudge, whipped cream and cherry. Then she gave her whipped cream to dad.”

Happy Father’s Day, Mr. President.

So, as I informed you earlier, Bliss Spa is now in DC! “Welcome to the land of luxe lotions, line-levelers and lip gloss.” But for now, Bliss is having a brownie-off to see which DC bakery will supply the brownies for Bliss’ infamous brownie bar at the DC location.

The competitors? Baked & Wired vs. Bread & Chocolate vs. Heller’s Bakery.

Celebrity Sweat on the Mall

Reese Witherspoon by UltimateGraphics

This just in!  Some website I’ve never heard of is reporting that Reese Witherspoon, a lucky member of my top 10 20 list, was spotted being all hot and sweaty on the Mall yesterday.  As you may or may not know, she’s in town filming How Do You Know with Owen Wilson who was nowhere to be seen.  It appears they have their product placement covered with her wearing a Nike top and Under Armour shorts (and I can only imagine what else).  Sources on the scene say that Reese was actually sprinting to my house.  How do I know?  She’s running north, that’s how.

If you spot Reese or any other celebs around town, be sure to let us know!  Or, you know, send them to my house.

A few weeks ago, I headed over to National Harbor for the Food and Wine Festival. This weekend, you can replicate my trip, but do it redneck and southern-style, for the Beer, Bourbon and BBQ festival.

$30 will get you in the door and drinking unlimited samples. Exhibitors range from Flying Dog, Ben and Jerry’s, Jim Beam Brands to Harley Davidson. There will be a mechanical bull, a World BBQ Bean Eating Championship, and a Ms. Bar-B-Q-Babe Contest. Do you need to know more?

Take Your Dog To Work Day

Bo Obama is often seen galavanting around the White House grounds and making his way in the Oval Office. Bo is certainly setting a good example for pups everywhere, as many area dogs gear up for the offical Take Your Dog To Work Day on June 26.

So lobby your boss for a day of slobber, fur and lovin’. If you don’t have any crazy allergic people in your office, I think this would be such a fun summertime work activity. Also, in celebration of the day, after your pooch has done his proper filing, and sucked-up to all the right people, you two can head on over to Art and Soul’s special patio puppy happy hour.  Your doggie can get all kinds of delicious gourmet chef-made treats and you can throw back some local brews well-earned after a day’s hard work.

Just remember, dogs aren’t allowed on the Metro or on the buses, so if you’re bringing your adorable furry friend to work, you’ll have to do an alternative commute. Maybe a puppy carpool, or something.

A Historic Rage

No matter what Craig Finn may tell you about a unified scene, The Hold Steady comes at you in fragments.

Blame it on the sometimes sloppy, jangly old-school rock and roll riffs — unashamedly lifted straight from your dad’s collection of vinyl — the drunken sing-speak proclamations of Finn, or just the confusion over just what you’re watching; America’s biggest bar band throws the craziest fist-pumping house party in town.

Granted, it’d be a strange place thing to witness from the rafters, a seat, or just a spot on the balcony — boredom and misplaced analysis falls easy— but when you’re packed into the rolling, bouncing first rows of the 9:30 Club on a sloshing Sunday night, there’s no scene that I’d rather fall into.

Squid, Shrimp and Veg, Oh Mai!

Monday night, I headed over to Jaleo in Crystal City for the kick-off of Jaleo’s annual Paella Festival. While Jose Andres and company were spotted at the Dupont Farmer’s Market last weekend cookin’ up a big old pot of the stuff, Monday marked the first day of the official festival. This year, Jose’s cooking buddy, Chef Quim Marques of El Suquet de L’Almirall, Barcelona, Spain, joins him to help Jose whip up tasty rice creations. So this year’s festival features paellas based on Marques’ recipes.

So how was it? There were some I loved, and some I wouldn’t care to try again. I’ll tell you what’s what. Continue reading

Aaaaand They’re Back

It seems that the great-fireworks controversy at Nationals Park has drawn to an end a mere 24 hours after it started.  You may recall that DC Fire Chief Dennis Rubin suspended the displays after debris fell on him during a game on Sunday.  After what must have been some intense negotiations, Nats officials caved and agreed to change the firing angle slightly to better protect the crowd. Hooray.

Leather, pleather, and drag queens, oh my! I think it must be time for Capital Pride. The weekend’s festivities kick off tonight at Cobalt (oh, Cobalt…I feel the exact same way about you Meg S. does…) with the Mr. and Ms. Capital Pride Leather contest. That sounds almost as good as the High Heel Race, really…

Tomorrow, Town, Nellie’s and Phase 1 will be hopping with happy hours and events, and there are plenty of educational opportunities. Sunday rounds out the weekend with a 5k and a night with the Mystics.  The rest of the week is smattered with some auctions, an interfaith service, and a pride shabbat. Check the full schedule for all the details. Oh, and did I forget to mention Ru Paul will be around? How could I?

Washingtonian Cheap Eats ON A MAP! Whee!

A few weeks ago, I enthusiastically waxed poetic about the merits of the DC Beer Map. So when reader and tweeter emvii sent me the Washingtonian Cheap Eats 2009 on a Google map, it was right up my alley.

So here is the deal about this glorious map: It is a  map of the 100 Best Cheap Eats in DC, identified by Washingtonian Magazine, tasted and rated by the mysterious unidentified map builders the wonderful peeps over at the DC baking blog Pete Bakes, and then sorted and color coded into green (good), yellow (fine) and red (don’t).

YAY! I LOVE IT! Whoever did this, Pete Bakes,  let me tell you, you made my day yesterday. I talked about this to at least 10 people. I love it when food and technology combine in map form. Brilliant. Good on you!

Romantic Comedies Love DC

The stars will be falling on DC over the next 14 weeks as a romantic comedy (bleh) is filmed in Adams Morgan, Penn Quarter and DuPont.  The Examiner reports that Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd, and Reese Witherspoon will be staring in the as of yet unnamed movie. The directors state that they were drawn to their filming locations by the unique architecture of the city.  Sets will focus more on the internal neighborhoods and less on DC’s monuments and iconic buildings. Filming is set to begin on June 14 at Nationals Park. Supposedly, they’re looking for extras and local production assistants.

Getaways: Rehoboth Beach

From boardwalks, to seafood, to sandy stretches to outlet shopping, Rehoboth Beach in Delaware has everything you could ask for in a beach. Three of my friends and I recently struck out for a relaxing escape-our-stressful-jobs girls weekend.

We’re twentysomethings on budgets, so we stayed at the Atlantis Inn. Clean, no frills, on the main strip, only a block and a half from the beach, the Atlantis is equipped with comfy rooftop poolside chairs, but take warning: double beds. So if you’re just a group of friends, you’ll be forced to do some mandatory cuddling. Whatever, at least we like each other.

The main drag of Rehoboth is adorable, lined with all kinds of great shops, good food and plenty of ice cream options. We were totally entertained. Continue reading

Boozy Bus = No.

‘Hell yes. Hell yes.’

In college, I lived at this fancy apartment complex that ran a shuttle to campus during the day, and then on Thurs-Sat they also a ran night shuttle to the main bar drag on campus. We dubbed it the drunk bus. It was brilliant, and some residents even made a song on GarageBand about the bus. It was well loved.

So when I read this Examiner article about the boozy bus, a shuttle direct from the hill to Gin & Tonic, free for anyone with an intern badge, I had instant flashbacks of my drunk bus years. They were good years, but seriously? You guys? The hill? IS NOT COLLEGE, despite what you may think. (And apparently what Gin & Tonic tells you.) Continue reading
