We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
Cause your friends don’t dance
And if they don’t dance
Well they’re no friends of mine!

I have trouble telling you my favorite song on any given day, but I can absolutely list in perfect order my top 10 dance anthems of the 1980s. Clocking in at #3 is the eternally awesome “Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats, who broke out from Montreal in 1982 with their first album, Rhythm of Youth.

Before Men Without Hats broke up less than 10 years later, they hit the international charts a big way a second time with “Pop Goes the World.”

The classic lineup of the band consisted of three brothers and a drummer but singer and keyboardist Ivan Doroschuk reformed the band in 2010 with three new musicians, a la Terri Nunn and Berlin and similar reenergized bands. The new band has a new album, Love in the Age of War, which itself could have broke out in 1982. The Montreal new wavers come to the State Threatre in Falls Church, Va., tomorrow on Nov. 29, marking the first time to catch Doroschuk and company locally in quite a while!

They band has been touring with The Human League and the B-52s — and they once were set to join Martin Fry and ABC on one of those Regeneration Tours — but they haven’t made it to the DC area until now. Buy a ticket but bring your friends along! (Because they *will* dance…)

Los Angeles quartet Right the Stars serve as openers.

Feeling a little stuffed from Thanksgiving and all those leftovers? You can walk it off this Saturday with chef Ris Lacoste.

Back in January, Lacoste started walking an hour each day and encouraged others to do the same with her and contribute $1 per mile to donate to the GW Women’s Heart Center. In an effort to reach the final goal of donating $25,000 and raising awareness for heart disease among women, she’s hosting a walk this Saturday at noon. Head to RIS with your $4 donation and you can join the chef and others on a four-mile walk from the restaurant down to the National mall and around the World War II, Vietnam and Korean Wars memorials, and then loop back to RIS for light refreshments.

If you’re planning on joining the walk, you can RSVP by calling 202-730-2500 or emailing natalie (at) risDC.com. RIS is located at 2275 L Street NW, Washington, DC 20037.

Hot Ticket: Paul van Dyk @ Echostage, 11/24/12

Before WHFS went off the air at 99.1 FM, it ran a late-night show on the weekend called Trancemissions. As the title suggests, the program played a great deal of trance music.

I would listen and learn. So much of the music seemed peaceful and elegant, and I quickly found some favorites not the least of which were compositions by Paul van Dyk.

Radio stations come and go but electronic dance music endures and so PvD returns to Washington, DC, this Saturday at the relatively new Echostage in support of a new studio album, Evolution, which features collaborations with Adam Young of Owl City and several vocalists like folk vocalist Sue McLaren and Christian musician Plumb, whose voices mange to add a great deal of warm to PvD’s shimmering beats. The new album bears all of the hallmarks of PvD’s classic sound while incorporating more global contributions from new collaborators and longtime partners. Listen for yourself!

PvD is wrapping up an intense mini-tour that included a benefit for victims of Hurricane Sand in New York City Thanksgiving night. Come to think of it, dancing Saturday night away is the best way to wrap up a long weekend and work off some Thanksgiving calories before getting back to the grind Monday. Glow resident DJ Roberto Gonzalez (at 9pm) and House DJ Robbie Rivera (11pm) warm things up before PvD (1am). Buy tickets here.

That Time I Walked Around DC In A Gangnam Style Costume

Gangnam Style has certainly taken America by storm this summer, and if this week’s appearance at the American Music Awards says anything- Psy might be around just a bit longer to be more than a one-hit wonder. On YouTube the video is currently the second most viewed of all-time and is poised to beat out the Biebz as #1.

Recently I took to the streets of DC to bring some local flavor to everybody’s favorite galloping dance. Watch the video below to see what happens when you walk around The Mall, White House, and U.S. Capitol dressed up as your favorite Korean rapper.

Pacers Hand The Wizards Ninth Straight Loss

It’s hard to imagine it’s only the Wizards fourth home game but this three-week old season is already starting to feel like an eternity. It’s not a new story to lament a Wizards team that is slow out of the gate. Last year’s team lost eight games in a row before their first win and the team in 2010 started the season 2-6.

Well Washington can add another game to the loss column as the Wizards lose their ninth straight game to the Indiana Pacers 96-89.

The team has struggled to find consistency in all facets of their play. Coach Randy Wittman has been left with the task of filling in the holes left by starters John Wall and Nene, who are still recovering from pre-season injuries. Wittman looked resigned at the end of the night as it was clear he still hasn’t figured out the answer to that question.

“I mean we got to figure out how to play a game- a whole game,” Wittman said in the post-game press conference.

Election 2012

The city voted yesterday for more than just the President, there were three charter amendments related to ethics, six seats on the city council and its chairman’s job up for grabs, and the more than 250 ANC seats up for grabs across all eight wards.  Lines were long yesterday, and stories concerning the difficulty of the electoral process are likely to come out in the days to come, but the increasingly-frequent paperwork revolution through election is mostly complete.

The Big Story: David Grosso (City Council)

Financial difficulties of incumbent council member Michael A. Brown were enough to undo him on Tuesday night, as David Grosso was successful enough in his messaging to unseat the listing Brown, who was unable to get his campaign’s financial house in order after more than a hundred thousand dollars went missing from his campaign.

Grosso won 68,000+ votes across the city to claim his At-Large seat, some 18,000+ more than Brown. Grosso’s campaign – focused on ethics issues – struck a nerve with the scandal-weary voters of the District, who also voted in by large margins ethics reforms that the city council requested be placed on the ballot.  Each of the three ethics provisions passed the vote, and all earned more than 75% support in the process, disallowing felons to serve on the council or as mayor, and allowing the council to expel a member on a 5/6ths majority.

Grosso will join Vincent Orange, who was re-elected in the #1 position with more than 122,000 votes, and David Catania as the current At-Large members of the council.  Phil Mendelson, currently the acting chair of the council, will move permanently to that position after his successful run in the special election that was held in conjunction with the general election. His seat, soon to be certified vacant, will be replaced in another special election this Spring.

This past weekend the 2012 Digital Capital Week kicked off here in Washington. For those that aren’t familiar with DCWeek, it is the city’s annual festival organized by the folks at iStrategyLabs and Tech Cocktail that focuses on many different sections of the tech scene. Anchored by keynote speeches on Wednesday and a conference Thursday at the Artisphere, the week also includes a multitude of hackathons, presentations, meet-ups, networking events, and parties. Lots of parties.

If you are a badge holder or just someone looking for some cool events to hit up, here are a few items that caught my eye as I combed through the DCWeek schedule:

Wizards Drop Home Opener To Celtics

Two years ago the Dougie filled the Verizon Center as John Wall danced his way into DC basketball.

Tonight a more somber tone was in the air as the Washington Wizards made their 2012 debut in the Verizon Center. Instead of dancing, the starting five of Trevor Ariza, Trevor Booker, Emeka Okafor, A.J. Price, and Bradley Beal simply got off the bench and jogged towards the huddle. No nonsense, no pizzazz.

Looking for their first win after an opening season loss in Cleveland, the Wizards had their work cut out for them as they went up against another win-less team in the Boston Celtics.

After falling behind 26-12 in the first quarter, the Wizards managed to catch up and kept it close to the final minutes of the game but ultimately couldn’t catch the Celtics who defeated the Wiz 89-86.

Mayor Gray: Speed Fines are Dropping

Photo courtesy of Chris Rief aka Spodie Odie

courtesy of Chris Rief aka Spodie Odie

Effective Monday, some speed camera fees are going down. Mayor Vincent Gray told a press conference this morning that the new rates will start at $50 for 10mph & under infractions, and go to $100 for 11-15mph infractions. Both of those fines are dropping $25.  For those who really like putting the hammer down (25mph over the speed limit or more) the fine is going up from $250 to $300.  The fines for 16-20 and 21-25mph over are remaining at their current level.

According to the Mayor and Chief Cathy Lanier, these changes will allow the city to employ 100 new police officers.

As someone who lives on a busy thoroughfare, I have found myself dulling the objection to the speed cameras when they slow traffic on my street enough that exiting my car is not an invitation to being flattened by a Maryland-bound commuter.

Not everyone agrees, and there’s certainly something to be said for the lack of police enforcement of speeding, which can reduce the recurrence of the event better than a ticket that shows up by mail 30-60 days later. But, this is where we’re at. What are your thoughts on speed cameras in DC?

Shiny Toy Guns, the hard-charging new wave quartet from Los Angeles, return in fine form to DC with a performance at the Rock and Roll Hotel on Sunday, Nov. 4. The show is rescheduled from Oct. 29, when the cusp of Hurricane Sandy smacked the city and shut down everything.

Not only do the Shiny Toy Guns return but they return with Carah Faye Charnow on the heels of a new album, which came out more than a week ago. The new album III is a triumphant return to a good mix of inviting vocals and dramatic synths that marked their first album, We Are Pilots. (This critic found the band’s second album, Season of Poison, a bit of a miss after the hit of the first.)

Shiny Toy Guns are back on the dance floor and they have ambitious plans for the future, as they told We Love DC. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see them at their best.

2 years of P.J. Clarke’s

PJ Clarke’s. Mmmmmm.courtesy of raphaelstrada

When P.J. Clarke’s opened in D.C. two years ago, I was one happy camper. I have fond memories of the original New York establishment, a place my dad and I would frequent on any trip up to the city. It’s an institution of sorts, not just because of all it’s been through (The Depression, Prohibition, two World Wars… and Sandy) but because of all the people who stop by top bite into a little history, and indulge in one of the city’s best burgers. Now, P.J’S has graced D.C. with that same red checkered tablecloth, fantastic Bloody Mary’s, large trays of oysters, and of course, the Cadillac burger.

To celebrate their 2 year anniversary today, P.J.’S will be offering it’s burger goodness for $2.00, all.day.all.night.  That’s many meals resolved.

Get Out The Vote (and appetite) – Election Day Specials

Vote by cookie! courtesy of Pianoman75

Nothing screams democracy quite like election-day food specials. In true Capital fashion, DC restaurants are getting in the swing of things and offering a host of President-worthy deals, giving you further incentive to get up and get heard. Shake Shack in Dupont Circle has partnered with Rock the Vote to offer “Shack the Vote”. On November 2nd, the burger mecca will be setting up a Pledge to Vote table, where you can pledge to rock it while also receiving a coupon for a free Presidential Caramel Custard, redeemable on Election Day. #brainfreezefordemocracy anyone?

One of my favorite wine bar’s, Vinoteca, if offering an all-day Happy Hour Party, featuring $5 wine and food specials, if you have the “I Voted” sticker. Vinoteca’s 7-day-a-week happy hour usually runs from 5-7pm, but will be extended on November 6th to celebrate all those who voted.

The Park Hyatt Lounge (also home to Blue Duck Tavern) is offering Presidential cheese, literally. Two blue cheeses representing the Democratic candidate and two red cheeses, representing the Republican candidate will be available nightly, nothing gets better than being political over cheese.

Capitol City Brewing Company will host a thirteen-hour All Day Election Day Happy Hour from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight on Tuesday, November 6, at both their downtown and Arlington locations.

701 is offering a special three-course fixed price Bipartisan lunch until Monday, January 21, Inaugural 2013, with a special lunch menu consists of an appetizer, entree and dessert priced at $25 per person, tax and gratuity not included.

Over in Old Town, Jackson 20 Chef Brian McPherson has created an Andrew Jackson-inspired prix fixe menu, available for $20 on Election Day for those wearing an “I Voted” sticker. The three-course, colonial-inspired menu pays homage to the restaurant’s namesake, President Andrew Jackson, and the foods he enjoyed.

There is nothing more patriotic than coming together to exercise your right to vote, demand your voice be heard, and party (and eat) together with your closest law-abiding citizens… Enjoy!

The turkey’s not cooked through, you’re scrambling to mash extra potatoes for the in-laws who RSVP’d last minute for dinner, and you could have sworn you had ground nutmeg in your cart when you checked out at the grocery store, but now it’s nowhere to be found. Does this Thanksgiving nightmare sound like a familiar scenario to you? Let Food & Friends cover dessert for you this year.

The DC nonprofit has a goal of delivering more than 3,500 turkeys this year to residents in DC and parts of Maryland and Virginia who are living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other critical illnesses. To raise funds, Food & Friends is hosting their annual Thanksgiving Pie Day sale and is aiming to sell 7,600 pies total.

Pies start at $25 each and this year’s selection includes homemade apple pies, spiced pumpkin pies, pecan pies and US Airways Almond Maretto brownies. For those of you that opt for the brownies, you receive a chance to win a $1,200 US Airways gift card. Each pie purchase provides one full day of meals to a Food & Friends client.

Pie sales end on November 15th and pre-purchased pies can be picked up on Tuesday, November 20th at Food & Friends or at one of 28 CVS locations throughout the area.

For more information on buying or selling pies or to purchase one online, go to www.foodandfriends.org/pie.
