Coming into Friday night’s game against the Montreal Canadiens, the Capitals had been struggling against most of the other teams, posting an abysmal record and generally playing in a funk. Luckily for the Caps, however, the one team they have been dominating as of late was at the other end of the ice this evening.

Getting together with friends for a cocktail party is pretty great – but even better if your guests include, say, authors and experts who want to talk about their work, a chef who whips up some very sophisticated morsels, and a terrific mixologist to make the drinks. That is the concept behind Fireside Cocktails by The Coterie. Meeting once a month at Fathom Creative (and, really, I can only dream of having a living room as chic as their second-floor gallery/event space), these events combine some of my very favorite things – intriguing conversation and tasty drinks.

Capitol Hill’s Boxcar Tavern should really have more followers. Since the neighborhood establishment opened at the end of December, it’s tweeted 90 times and garnered 83 followers. Maybe if the restaurant tweeted a little more, it could raise that number a bit (note: this is not an invitation to over-tweet!)
@BoxcarDC only follows 7 other users, so immediately I wanted to know who they were. Unsurprisingly, the tweeters were restaurateur Xavier Cervera’s other four restaurants: Molly Malones, Lola’s Barracks Bar & Grill, Chesapeake Room and Senart’s Oyster & Chop House, plus @HootSuite, @Twitter and @BarracksRow.
While promotional, Boxcar Tavern’s tweets are funny and informative to denizens who want to know what’s on special everyday. My favorite was a tweet from Tuesday that had that mix down perfectly (and also highlighted my philosophy!) See this week’s winning tweet after the jump.

Today the food team has a pair of tickets to giveaway to one lucky reader to attend the Sixth & I event with Sticky Fingers Bakery owner Doron Petersan. Petersan, who is a two-time Food Network Cupcake Wars winner, just released her first cookbook, “Sticky Fingers’ Sweets! 100 Super-Secret Vegan Recipes.”
She’ll be speaking at the Historic Synagogue on Thursday, March 1st at 7 PM, and doing a book signing afterwards. Petersan is known for her vegan recipes and determination to show that baked goods don’t need butter or eggs to taste good.
Here’s how the giveaway works:
For the chance to win the tickets, leave a comments on this post using a valid e-mail address between 9 AM and 5 PM today. One entry per e-mail address. We’ll close the comments section at 5 PM and a winner will be randomly selected and notified by e-mail. If you’re chosen as the winner, you must respond to the e-mail within 24 hours or you will forfeit the tickets and we’ll select another winner. The winner will be able to pick up the tickets under their name at will call at the Sixth & I synagogue.
Good luck and happy (vegan) eating!
It was all going kinda well.
After the Wizards’ loss to Miami back on the 10th, the team went on a long road trip and managed to win a couple of games against Detroit and Portland. Then they lost three straight to the LA Clippers, Utah Jazz, and Phoenix Suns.
Back in the Verizon Center for one last game before the All-Star break the Wizards took on the Sacramento Kings in what would of been a bounce back game and a way to end the first half of the season on a positive note.
Instead the team couldn’t hold on after leading 68-60 in the first half and let another game slip away as the Kings roared back in the third quarter and ended the night with a 115-107 win. In the loss the Wizards set new standards in futility thanks to another boneheaded play from JaVale McGee.
With 10:12 left in the 3rd quarter, Kings’ guard Francisco Garcia put up a teardrop floater towards the basket that gracefully made its way to the hoop- until McGee used his scientifically measured body to swat the ball into the eighth row of the Verizon Center, a clear goaltending violation.

Via Jalopnik and the Washington Examiner, Virginia residents don’t need to sweat the dreaded “speeding ticket via plane” in Virginia, mostly because the state doesn’t think it’s worth the $150/hr cost of keeping spotter planes in the air. Instead, they’re just going to keep nabbing you via squad car, and in some parts of the state, speed camera.
I always thought it would be hilarious/awesome to see the Air National Guard field a couple of A-10 Warthogs as speeding spotter aircraft. A few barrages from the Avenger 30mm cannon would pretty much stop all speed limit violation in the entire state.

The Dead Milkmen, enduring critics of the status quo, bring their jangly punk rock to U Street Music Hall Saturday for an early show. Best known for their 1988 single “Punk Rock Girl,” which epitomizes their irreverence for societal norms, the group likely will present their classics and new material from last year’s self-published The King in Yellow.
Shows like this don’t come around too often, especially if you’re someone who grew up listening to various punk and new wave acts in the mid-1980s. The Dead Milkmen are not in the midst of a full-scale tour, so it’s a great one-time opportunity to relive the contributions the mid-Atlantic region, including DC and the Milkmen’s hometown of Philadelphia, made to the vibrant punk scene.
Tickets to this all-ages early show are still available online for $18. Philadelphia-based psych-poppers Bleeding Rainbow open.

End of the week calls for a little celebration! Head out to where the food trucks are!
Interested in hearing some cool music while supporting the work of DC Vote? Head over to DC9 on February 23rd for the next in the on-going Monument Music and Arts series of benefit shows which have previously supported other great local non-profits like 826DC, We Are Family, and Common Good City Farm.
The line up on the 23rd features Raleigh, NC’s Heads on Sticks and the DC-native-fronted Farewell Republic. Both bands specialize in takes on buzzy, psych-inflected rock that should appeal to a wide audience. Before and after the band sets, local artist and DC voting rights activist Adrian Parsons will DJ – under the moniker Jeanne Pierre le Douche.
Tickets are only $10 and are available now.
This is your stomach. It’s telling you to close the laptop and get some fresh air. The food trucks are calling.
