Surprise Wizards Victory Over Lakers Leaves Kobe Speechless

Tonight was a weird night for the Washington Wizards. With a little over 7 minutes left to play in the third quarter the Lakers held a 21-point lead over the Wiz. That was the only normal (or at least expected) thing about tonight.

Then things got interesting. By the end of the third quarter the Washington closed to within two points. At the start of the fourth quarter the a three-pointer from Roger Mason Jr. put Washington ahead and after a thrilling end the Wizards shocked the Lakers with a 106-101 victory.

But it wasn’t just the result that was strange and unexpected.

Capital City Diner, closed this past winter, is now up for sale on Ebay, including all of the fixtures, kitchen equipment and various accoutrements. The diner is a Silk Road Diner, built by the Paterson Vehicle Company in 1947, and features five booths, sixteen stools, and could be reconfigured to seat more. The 40′ x 14′ diner also comes with contacts at a reputable diner-moving company (a problem you don’t want to have, believe me), and the bid is currently $20,000.

Capitals Crumble Against Flyers, 1-0

Thanks to NBC Sport’s prerogative in scheduling some games for television, Sunday’s Capitals game against the Flyers was pushed back to 7pm. Unfortunately, it seems as though the Caps didn’t get their afternoon naps, and while they started well, they could not sustain the necessary fortitude to grin out a victory against one of the East’s tougher teams, and fell to the Flyers, 1-0.

Hope?

I know, it’s March, and there’s baseball and soccer just around the corner, and there’s still the Caps and Wizards going on, but if there’s any one thing this town venerates, it’s the Redskins. I had to share this beautiful piece of art from Tumblr, of Robert Griffin III, the Baylor QB that participated in last week’s NFL Combine. Well, participated may understate what he did there. He wrecked the joint.

The question will be: do the Redskins want him?

Well, they should. His 4.41 40 yard dash and 39″ vertical leap were very promising, and his Heisman win last year make him a commodity. The Skins will need to give up a lot to move up high enough in the Draft to pick him up. It’s hard, at this point, to say they’d be wrong to do it.

On This Day in 1934 …

As you might know by now, we’re big fans of the DC Craft Bartenders Guild’s annual Repeal Day Ball, which celebrates the national repeal of Prohibition. What you might not know is that DC’s local prohibition law remained on the books for a few more months after the national repeal.

Today is the anniversary of the repeal of prohibition in DC. According to Garrett Peck’s book Prohibition in Washington, DC, DC’s repeal went into effect just after midnight on March 1, with some 200 licenses hand-delivered by police and other DC officials. The first recipients? The National Press Club, who still have license ABRA-000001 [PDF].

Know of any official or unofficial celebrations? Post ’em in the comments.

And the Blossom Bloomtime Is….

DSC_0191

This year marks the centennial anniversary of Japan’s gift of cherry trees to Washington, DC and the enduring friendship between Japan and the United States. The National Cherry Blossom Festival is celebrating in style this year with a five-week calendar of events. Considered the nation’s greatest springtime celebration, this year will feature diverse and creative programming promoting traditional and contemporary arts and culture, natural beauty, and community spirit.

Among some of the events are the Pink Tie Party on March 20 with Chefs Jose Andres and Roy Yamaguchi and the Cherry Blossom Parade on April 14, co-hosted by Katie Couric with special correspondents Alex Trebek, Leon Harris, and Alison Starling.

The biggest news, however, is the bloom prediction by NPS Chief Horticulturalist Rob DeFeo. Due to the light winter and continual warming trend, the peak bloom prediction this year is from March 24th through the 31st. In the coming weeks, watch for updates from WLDC on the exciting Cherry Blossom events and plans to come!

Wizards Can’t Keep Up With Magic In Second-Half Home Opener

After ending the first half of the season with another disappointing loss, Wizards Point Guard John Wall hoped that the team would spend the All-Star break clearing their heads and starting the second half more competitive than their lowly 7-27 first-half record would suggest.

Well it’s still more of the same. After losing a nail-biter in Milwaukee, it wasn’t close as the Wizards let another game slip away tonight in a 95-102 loss to the Orlando Magic.

The W Hotel has a history of using their walls to show off cool and interesting art – and using their lounges to throw fabulous parties. Those come together tonight to celebrate the opening of an exclusive photography exhibit, “ROCKED.” These iconic photos of musicians by British “man who shot the seventies” Mick Rock will bring forty years of rarely-displayed images of the performers who defined pop culture to a Washington audience for the first time.

To open the exhibit which is set to run March 2-31, a lavish party will be hosted as part of the “W Happenings” series, including a live performance by Fitz and the Tantrums and a DJ set by Rob Garza and Eric Hilton of local legends Thievery Corporation.

Sound like an amazing party you do not want to miss? You still have until 5pm today to enter to win two VIP passes to attend – along with a signed copy of Mick Rock’s book and an overnight stay at the hotel.
