Metro releases new map, rush hour strategy

Metro Map excerpt
Map excerpt courtesy of Metro

Rush hour on Metro tends to be synonymous with things like “Orange Crush” and “Trains Offloaded” and “Why, oh why, did I try to take public transit today?!” While Metro can’t, it seems, fix things like intra-office corruption and driver mistakes, they are trying to do things to make it easier for the general commuter to suffer less. Starting in June, the Orange line will get 6 extra trains per hour (3 in each direction) which will run from Vienna to Largo Town Center, for an 18% capacity boost. The move forks the Orange line into traditional Blue line territory. In addition, the Yellow line will get forked at King Street to include some trains heading to Springfield to increase southbound capacity from the core.

Metro has also said that additional “transfer free” options will be coming, but failed to detail them in their press coverage. This would include something similar to the Farragut West/Farragut North walking transfer, but it’s hard to say until Metro makes it clearer.

With the Silver Line coming in 2014 (we hope), map changes that include the line out to Dulles Rail have begun in earnest, and a dashed-line extension now splits off from the Orange line to the northwest between West Falls Church and East Falls Church and bears several empty circles where stations will one day go. In addition, the market research that WMATA did has sprouted shoots, with new glyphs for buses to the airport, VRE, MARC and Amtrak, and parking options more deftly labeled. In addition, the secondary names of stations are given reduced emphasis in favor of the primary names. In addition, Forest Glen on the Red line gets a hospital glyph (but why not Medical Center?) which is new to the system.

The new map is available for public viewing on the WMATA website, and will be coming to a train car near you in the near term. We’ll see if we can get more information about the new transfer options.

9 Reasons to See “The 9” at Iota Tonight – March 2012 Edition

About a month ago, I got a first-hand look at Justin Trawick’s local songwriter series “The 9” when I performed at Iota Club and Café with eight other DC-area artists. It was a unique experience both on stage and off.

Being a part of “The 9” is a collaborative effort. That’s what makes it interesting.

Tonight, “The 9” will be back at Iota. Though it’s common for “The 9” to perform at Iota (it’s a monthly affair at the Arlington rock club and café), there is no such thing as a standard set. Each show is different because the bill changes from venue to venue, month to month.

Here are a few reasons from tonight’s “9” as to why this particular show might be worth your Tuesday night:

Zia HassanIt’s the first day of spring.  There’s no better way to come out of hibernation than to hear 9 different musical perspectives in one performance.  A new beginning for the trees, and a new beginning for your ears.

Ringling Bros. Is Fully Charged In DC

2012 Elephant Parade – Capitol Fun – 03-13-12

If you didn’t realize from the giant Elephant Parade last week, the circus is in town. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s Fully Charged Tour spent the weekend in Chinatown for a slate of shows at the Verizon Center. The circus will continue in Baltimore for the rest of the month and then head to Fairfax for a run of performances.

Ringling Bros.’ return to the DC-area wasn’t welcomed by all. PETA asked Mayor Gray to investigate claims of animal abuse and protesters were out in force outside the Verizon Center urging families not to see The Greatest Show on Earth. PETA has also recently released a new video starring Alec Baldwin pleading for a boycott of animal-featured circuses.

Regardless of the controversy, the show is a spectacle beyond any other where the best moments are found sans elephants, tigers, or other animals. An overwhelming mixture of human feats will surely draw the attention of any young child.

Wizards Trade McGee and Young For Nene In Three-Team Deadline Trade

As the NBA Trade Deadline loomed, it appeared that the Wizards would not be able to make a deal. The Wizards have tried desperately to move team headache and fan boo favorite Andray Blatche but couldn’t find anyone to take him. The team had made it known that they would be open to trading anybody but John Wall if they would take Blatche as well. In essence Blatche became the Shipping and Handling for any deal an NBA team would make with the Wizards. Unable to move Blatche, the team looked to make changes elsewhere. According to NBA sources, the Wizards traded JaVale McGee and Ronny Turiaf to the Denver Nuggets for Nene. Also involved in the deal are the Los Angeles Clippers who will sent Brian Cook and a future second-round pick to Washington for Nick Young.

2012 DC Pachyderm Parade

The circus is back in town! In case you’ve missed the advertising, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus will be performing at the Verizon Center March 15th to the 18th. Every year Ringling Bros. comes into town, they parade their elephants from the railroad south of the Capitol Building to the Verizon Center. Dubbed the Pachyderm Parade, it’s always a cool time to see a bunch of elephants walk through the middle of downtown DC.

This year the parade is Tuesday March 13th. They’re doing something different by parading the pachyderms through downtown at night, starting around 8pm. Well worth taking the time to see; here’s a link to the parade route. And there are a bunch of restaurants and bars in Chinatown and Penn Quarter doing specials; called Clown Around Downtown Happy Hour, it makes another good reason to come out and enjoy the sight.

And if you’re interested, I’m organizing a meetup of photographers through my DC Social group on Flickr. If you want to go running around with a bunch of photogs, you’re welcome to join us; all skill levels are welcome, including non-photo people. And if you do take pics, be sure to tag your shots with “2012 Pachyderm Parade” and I’ll do a recap for Thursday.

Justice kinda I guess?

WaPo reports that a deal has been made in the Bristow case of a mother initially charged with felony murder after leaving her almost three-year-old child in a car. She’ll serve probation for two years and perform community service in exchange for her plea to two counts of child neglect.

I mentioned this when the charges were filed last year and I’ll mention it again: if you have a firm opinion on this and haven’t read Gene Weingarten’s piece about the phenomenon, Fatal Distraction, you’re almost certainly insufficiently informed to have that opinion.

This plea deal feels a lot closer to what seems right than murder, though it’s hard for me to know in my heart whether anything is the right thing to do. Does society need this woman herself to suffer more than she already is? Does the punishment provide any deterrent to others? Can we fight distraction and sleep deprivation mistakes with fear of justice system reprisal?

Capitals Bag Up Maple Leafs, 2-0

Desperation may be a stinky cologne, but, for one day at least, the Caps ended up smelling like roses. The Capitals faced the Toronto Maple Leafs in a Sunday matinee contest – their last home game for a while as they take to the road on their most important extended trip of the year. Although the Caps did not make up any ground on Florida, which holds a slim two point lead on the Southeast Division, they managed to tighten their grasp on the eighth (and final) playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, extending their lead over Winnipeg to four points.

Redskins Reportedly Trade for #2 Pick

As it turns out, the Redskins did want Robert Griffin III. They want him so bad they’ve traded their first and second draft picks this year, and their first pick in each 2013 and 2014, just to get into the slot that he might be in for the draft this year. Twitter erupted last night, and we saw some of the best of the sports tweets for the area, and compiled them into this Storify segment, right below the cut.

Welcome to Washington (we hope), Mr. Griffin. This is a town where you can walk on water, if you just get the wins.

Ovechkin Takes To The Ice

For the second time in five games, Alex Ovechkin scored in overtime to cap a comeback victory as the Capitals defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 last night at Verizon Center. The win kept the Capitals’ fragile playoff hopes alive.

After a fiery speech by head coach Dale Hunter following a lackluster second period, the Capitals played the third period with urgency, grit and determination. Marcus Johansson tied the game at 2-2 with four minutes remaining in the game to force overtime. Continue reading
