GWU to host Stewart/O’Reilly Debate

O'Reilly vs Stewart 2012

Bill O’Reilly and Jon Stewart are going to duke it out over lecterns this October, and GWU’s Lisner Auditorium is playing host to this battle for the ages. Each have their own cable persona, Stewart famously liberal, O’Reilly famously not.

Tickets go on sale today in about 15 minutes, but if you’re shut out of the auditorium, you can still stream the event live as it happens on October 6th, for $4.95. If I weren’t already committed to work at Virgin Free Fest that day, this is how I’d be spending my evening. This looks phenomenal.

Mei Xiang’s a mommy again!

Congratulations to Mei Xiang and all the excited Panda-keepers at the National Zoo, late last night the Zoo celebrated the birth of a new giant panda cub at 10:46pm. The city has been on Panda Watch for a while now, though panda pregnancy is a more of a crapshoot than science.  The news, as it stands, from the Zoo is as follows:

As far as we can tell, the cub was born at about 10:46 p.m. on September 16. According to chief veterinarian Suzan Murray:

“Mei Xiang is behaving exactly the same way she did when Tai Shan was born. She is cradling her cub closely , and she looks so tired, but every time she tries to lay down, the cub squawks and she sits right up and cradles the cub more closely. She is the poster child for a perfect panda mom.”

We believe there is only one cub. If the cub is to have a twin, we should know by sunrise.

For now, the only way animal care staff will monitor the cub is using the web cams. Our goal is for Mei Xiang to raise this cub naturally. With Tai Shan, it wasn’t until he was about two weeks old that Mei walked away from him briefly and our veterinary team was able to give him a brief well-cub exam.

Funny names for the little guy or girl are totally welcome in the comments. I was leaning toward Parkay Tub.

Nats End 8-3 Homestand with 8-0 Loss

Want to know how today’s game went for the Nationals? The Miami Marlins number nine spot batted five times and every one of those was taken by Ricky Nolasco. The Nationals sent three different number nine hitters to the plate. Edwin Jackson in the third, Corey Brown in the sixth, and Eury Perez in the ninth. Through six innings Nolasco had faced the minimum and allowed only two base runners in route to a four hit complete game shutout of the Nationals.

There is little to no good that can be taken from this game for the Nationals. In order to take any good out of this one would have to stretch their imaginations and look back to the Nats August 28 9-0 loss to Ricky Nolasco and the Marlins. What followed was a victory over the Marlins, three against the Cardinals, four against the Cubs, and one against the Marlins. In total over the Nats 11 games following their last beat down by the Marlins they went 9-2.

Before the Storm the Nats Make it Close, After Win 7-6

Before the storm the Nats, for the second night in a row, fought and clawed their way back from an early deficit. Twice they cut the Marlins lead to one. Once in the fourth inning when Zimmerman led off with a single and eventually scored on a Danny Espinosa single. It was short lived though as the Marlins would push their lead back to three runs in the top of the fifth as Detwiler would walk the lead-off hitter, Solano, before Reyes bunted a ball fair and ran into it and Stanton lined out hard to Zimmerman. Carlos Lee would then walk and Ruggiano would ground a ball to LaRoche.

When a ball is headed towards LaRoche Nats fans have started to feel a bit of comfort. It has become an assumption that he will make the play, but this time he didn’t. The ball went between his legs and Solano was able to score. The next batter, John Buck, would then single in an additional run to push the Marlins lead back to three.

A night after hitting six homers for the first time in Washington, D.C. the Nationals did it again. This time getting homers from Bernadina, Harper, LaRoche, Desmond, Espinosa, and Harper again. With this two homer game Bryce Harper has passed Ken Griffey Jr. on the list for must homers by a 19 year old. Harper now stands alone in third behind Mel Ott and Tony Conigliaro. As impressive as Harper was this game belonged to Gio.

Through the first two innings Gio was perfect until a grounder was hit to Desmond and he made a low throw that LaRoche was unable to pick. After that Gio continued the no-hitter until the sixth inning when Darwin Barney led it off with a single. In total Gio Gonzalez would through seven innings of shutout ball allowing three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. It was an impressive performance and earned Gio his 18th win on the season.

The Washington Nationals took advantage of a young, less-than-mediocre Cubs pitching staff on Tuesday night when the team went on to beat Chicago 11-5. Manager Davey Johnson’s offensive lineup hit a franchise record six home runs off the Cubs, which is the most homeruns in a single home game by any Washington-based ballclub in baseball history.

Starting pitcher, right-hander Edwin Jackson also had quite the night on both sides of the game. He earned his ninth win of the year having pitched five and two-thirds innings. Jackson gave up seven hits, four earned runs, one walk, and struck out eight on 93 pitches (62 for strikes). Jackson also got in on the hitting action going 2-for-4 including a hit off Cubs rookie starter Chris Rusin. Continue reading

It was business as usual at Nats Park Monday afternoon when the Nationals faced the fifth place Chicago Cubs. Left-handed starter Ross Detwiler soared to his ninth victory of the season with a 2-1 win and held the Cubs scoreless during his seven innings pitched.

Detwiler gave up four hits while issuing three strike out and three walks over 93 pitches thrown (62 for strikes). His performance denied the Cubs run support but Chicago’s starter righter-hander Jeff Samardzija was playing it just the same. Continue reading

Cardinals Offense Pounds Jordan Zimmermann, Nats Fall 10-9

It was a game the Nationals could have won. A four-run first inning made the team’s offensive efforts look solid. But a short outing from starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann helped this game fall into the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals lineup in a 10-9 loss.

Zimmermann lasted a total of three and one-third inning and gave up eight earned runs – the most of his career. His 93-pitch start also saw two hit batters and two homeruns from the Cardinals offense before he was replaced by reliever Craig Stammen in the fourth. Manager Davey Johnson indicated after the game that he’s not worried about Zimmermann’s shoulder or arm in general. He attributed this loss to being one of those games where it just gets away from the pitcher. According to Johnson, Zimmermann’s just as strong as ever. Continue reading

If you’re looking to round out your Labor Day weekend plans, how does free theater at the Kennedy Center sound?

The 11th annual Page to Stage festival runs this Saturday-Monday and features free readings, workshops, and rehearsals of new works by some of the area’s most talented artists and theater companies.

This year, Synetic Theater offers a training demonstration and preview of their upcoming wordless Jekyll and Hyde; groups like The Inkwell and DC-Area Playwrights Group plan to showcase short, new works in progress by local playwrights; Signature Theatre, Folger Theatre, and the Kennedy Center all team up for Ken Ludwig’s latest thriller; and the weekend features a number of family-friendly shows for the younger crowd.

Page to Stage also offers a rare chance to see shows in the Kennedy Center’s rehearsal spaces and smaller venues. With a casual and collaborative atmosphere, it’s a bit like the Fringe – except with more chandeliers.

Page to Stage runs September 1-3, 2012 throughout multiple venues at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The Kennedy Center is located at 2700 F Street, NW Washington, DC 20566. Closest Metro stop: Foggy Bottom/GWU (Orange/Blue line). For more information call  202-467-4600.

Edwin Jackson Dominates The Cardinals, Nats Win 8-1

Starting pitcher Edwin Jackson faced his former club, the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals, for the first time on Monday night since being traded to Washington. It wasn’t a complete game shut it but it was pretty close. Jackson threw eight innings in an 8-1 game that ended in the Nationals’ favor to start out this three-game series.

The Nats 1-2 punch at the top of Manager Davey Johnson’s lineup came out of the gate strong to start. Outfielder Jayson Werth drew a walk off Jaime Garcia followed by a two-run laser of a homerun hit to the right field bullpen by rookie outfielder Bryce Harper in the first inning.

Washington maintained their lead for the game’s entirety and continued tacking on runs as they went, including a Werth solo homerun in the fifth. The Nats took advantage of Garcia’s exit in the sixth and went on to score a total of four runs in the sixth and seventh: Danny Espinosa scored on a Werth ground out off reliever Fernando Salas and Michael Morse scored on a Jesus Flores single off reliever Lance Lynn.
