Linestanding

The Daily Beast has a piece up today on the noble profession of line-standing, and how the character of the profession is changing as the people who want a guaranteed spot to watch a hearing in the Capitol go from being bike couriers or interns to being the Homeless. The video’s pretty insightful, and asks the question: Should linestanding be permitted as part of the democratic process, where those who can pay someone to stand in line on their behalf get all the access?

This seems to be another case of paying the homeless to do something (y’know, like union protesting) that you should be paying staff to do, but that just might be me being ornery.

Office Schedule Change – Ugly Sweater Day Revisited

I just wish I had a nice cat sweater and a beer and I could stay at home, away from the impending craziness, snow-induced accidents and obvious breakdown of order in the world. It’s too cold to be June. After all, this isn’t a God-foresaken area of the world where you expect misery and suffering. Well, maybe you do in a place like Bethesda, but certainly not here in good old Georgetown.

It’s too cold today. I’m going back to bed. Wake me when the revolution comes or the mothership lands. Whichever comes first.

This weekend was a deadly one for Metro riders as two people were struck by trains in separate incidents.  The first took place on Saturday at the Potomac Ave station when a man was run over on the orange line.  He was alive when rescue workers arrived but later succumbed to his injuries.  The second incident occurred on Sunday at Bathesda where a women intentionally jumped in front of a train.  Both deaths delayed service for several hours as police investigated.

Recycling woes: People amaze me

People still don’t get it.
Originally uploaded by carlweaver

I work in an office in DC, where recycling is enforced and violations come with fines. Granted, we are new transplants here, as our office recently moved from Virginia, where lawlessness pervades and you can do anything you want without consequence. Almost. We are simple, country folk, still getting used to the big city.

However, you’d think that a whole office of college-educated people could figure out what goes in which contaier. They are different colors, different color bags and one container even has the recycle symbol stenciled on it.

Our office administrator put up these signs just today, and included a list of what can go into the recycling bin, and already it has been violated. What do you do at this point? Hire someone to monitor them? Does your office comply with recycling rules? How do you enforce them?

If you saw the Potomac or the Anacostia this morning and though, “Man, does that look full,” you’d be absolutely right. In the eleven day span ending yesterday, DC has notched 4″ of rainfall, which is almost an inch over what we normally get for all of June. And, since it’s supposed to rain again pretty much every day til the middle of next week, it’s safe to say this might be one of the wettest Junes ever. And no, that time when you ended up at that Intern party doesn’t count.

A spate of gunfire erupted at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum this afternoon, with two men injured and transported to area hospitals. The shooter is reported to be James W. Von Brunn, a white supremacist. Both Von Brunn and a member of the USHMM Security Force were taken to George Washington University Hospital in critical condition.

14th Street has been shuttered in the area (between Constitution and D St SW), leading to major traffic snarls around the artery (link to Traffic Camera at 14th & E) as police response and investigations continue. A third man has been taken to the hospital, according to WTOP, after being injured from flying glass.

Update 23 [5:10p] We’re going to wrap our live coverage at this time. We’ll pick up additional updates in a new entry later this evening.

Update 22 [4:42p] The US Holocaust Memorial Museum is confirming the death of Officer Johns, a six-year veteran of the Security Force at the USHMM. The museum will be closed tomorrow in honor of Officer Johns. In addition, flags will be flown at half-staff at the Museum.

Update 21 [4:40p] The Washington Post has republished the 1983 article about Von Brunn’s sentencing, with some details about the attempted kidnapping of the Federal Reserve Board.

Update 20 [4:32p] WUSA9 identifies the security guard as Stephan Tyrone Johns. He was fatally wounded at the Holocaust Memorial Museum this afternoon just a bit before 1pm.

Update 19 [4:22p] Many thanks to Karen, who pointed us at Von Brunn’s Wikipedia User Page biography, which largely mirrors the site from earlier today.

Update 18 [4:18p] Former Secretary Cohen and his wife Janet Langhart are on CNN now. They’re talking with him about his viewing. He was right out front of the Museum when it happened. He was 30-40 feet away when the incident occurred.

Update 17 [4:05p] WUSA 9 is reporting that the Security Guard at the Holocaust Museum has died, due to his injuries sustained at the scene. CNN has confirmed this as well.

Update 16 [3:25p] Clinton Administration Defense Secretary William Cohen was in the entry to the museum when the incident occured. His wife Janet Langhart was to have performed her one-act play, an imagined conversation between Anne Frank and Emmett Till, this evening at the Museum. Continue reading

Talkin’ Transit: Doors to Nowhere

Remember a year ago when Metro said they were going to ‘crack down’ on the rash of “doors opening” off platform? That new safety and training programs would be implemented to keep such accidents from happening?

Guess what!

It hasn’t worked.

WaPo caught the story on Monday: over the last two months, there have been 17 incidents of train doors opening at stations with cars still in the tunnel. Of those 17, 14 of them were eight-car trains that weren’t properly berthed. During rush hour. Most on the Red Line. The other three were six-car trains…two of which not properly berthed.

Norton “Disappointed” in Obama

With the Voting Rights Bill on hold, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton has expressed some displeasure with President Obama over his unwillingness to help with the situation. According to WTOP’s Mark Segraves, she reached out to President Obama’s offices several times for assistance and got just the cold shoulder instead. Would Obama’s help have come in handy against the Ensign amendment? It’s possible, but I think that with major political capital projects like Health Care Reform, the Nationalization of General Motors, and TARP funds, he’s had other things to do.

Eleanor Holmes Norton: Voting Rights Can Wait

Mike DeBonis (Loose Lips of the City Paper) has the news that Eleanor Holmes Norton is killing this year’s Voting Rights Bill, mostly thanks to the inability of Steny Hoyer to get his party in line over the removal of the Ensign amendment. The Voting Rights Bill may come back in another Congress, but for now it remains a continuing elusive dream for the District of Columbia.

The Ensign amendment, designed to remove all of the District’s current firearms registration laws and revert to the Federal standards, was transformed into a national referendum by the NRA, who promised to grade legislators on their vote. With political pressure weighing on centrist Democrats who support 2nd amendment rights, the Ensign amendment passed handily and put a boat anchor on the bill. Unable to remove it in Conference, Congresswoman Norton has requested that the Bill be tabled until some time in the future.

If you’d like to register your displeasure, you can contact the office of Senator John Ensign, below. Perhaps we can arrange for a mail-in campaign where we send him something to symbolize the disenfranchisement of the District on a Federal Level?

WAPO reports that the fireworks displays at Nats Park were suspended by DC Fire Chief Dennis Rubin after ash fell on him while he attended a game.  While he was not injured, and there have been no fire concerns up to this point, the Chief wishes to conduct a safety review before the displays are reinstated. If this seems a little asinine, let’s be honest: at this point, the Nationals don’t really deserve fireworks, anyways.

Sound Off: Best food INSIDE Union Station

‘it’s full. yet it’s empty.’

I have mixed feelings about Union Station. It’s gorgeous,  yet it’s grubby. It’s full of good stores, yet it has nothing really that interesting.  It’s got good hustle and bustle, yet I hate the lost souls. Seriously, it’s love/hate. I love it but I really hate it. But mostly I think about Union Station and how much space is wasted with bad food. I recently had a discussion on Twitter with my tweeple (I’m getting addicted. We knew this would happen, didn’t we?) about Union Station and the lack of decent food inside.

We settled on Corner Bakery actually being the best option. And that’s fine, I like Corner Bakery (not as much as I love Potbellys!) but isn’t it sad that our epicenter of transportation doesn’t have good uniquely-DC food inside? There’s a decent Gyro to be had downstairs, and I don’t hate Cafe Renee, but ya’ll, it’s basically a food-void, in my opinion. This is distressing to me. So I ask you… Am I missing something? Is there a hidden gem in there that I just don’t know about? Or is Union Station just the way I see it – a black hole of mediocrity?

To Air is Human

The crowd screamed and the LED bars fluttered and held at the upper border of the E-Q shirt. “I think you all broke the t-shirt! Again, 1-2-3!” More screaming, more lights, the same result. This was how the regional US Air Guitar championships were being decided: the read out from a sound tech’s geeky, light-up shirt. I hardly batted an eyelash. It just fit into the natural course of things. After several hours of flamboyance and machismo, the honor of DC’s air guitar reputation resting on the fluctuations of a light-up t-shirt seemed like nothing to me. And that’s what the US Air Guitar Regionals, held last Friday at the 9:30 Club, was all about. Blowing your mind.

I approached competitive air guitar with a measure of incredulity. I assumed that I’d be treated to fleshy denizens of “mom’s basement”, out to strut their stuff and generally make fools of themselves, and that after two or three performances I’d grow bored and b-line for bar. I was so self-assured that I grabbed a few drinks before the competition, just to give the evening a fighting chance. Journalistic integrity (if bloggers are actually beholden to that) kept me to two beers, after which I girded my loins and headed for the 9:30.

ESPN Could Live Without Nationals

‘jumping in vain’

Gene Wojchiechowski of ESPN thinks we could all do without the Nats, putting them atop the list of 50 Things We Can Do Without in Sports. Now, the Nationals are bad, and I’ll admit that they’re on their way to eclipsing the 1962 Mets for the worst single season record of all time, but really? We have a beautiful stadium here now, and we’re supposed to ditch the team? For what?

Well, that got me thinking:

  • Give it to D.C. United. Seriously. Best Soccer park in the US, hands down, and United will probably make the playoffs this season, and have a decent shot to win it all.
  • World’s Best Outdoor Concert Venue. It seats more than Nissan, and it’s on the Metro. Need I say more? Strip out some of the upper deck seats and make a cool lawn-type seating area…
  • Bring back the pillories. C’mon, tell me you wouldn’t pay admission to throw rotten produce at Hariette Walters?

What do you think we should do?

Walters’ Attorney Claims She’s Anything But Responsible

The brazen embezzlement of tens of millions of DC City Tax Dollars, distributed through refund checks by Hariette Walters, appear to be the fault of Walters’ upbringing, depression, childhood traumas, obesity and other causes, all of which mean that Walters should only serve 15 years in federal custody for her role in the theft.

Really? I was thinking maybe the fact that the city schools, and infrastructure, that are taking the hit for the theft might rather suggest she spend a good 20-25 in prison instead.

Monumental: The Zero Milestone

‘Washington, DC’
courtesy of ‘iguerra’

You might’ve spotted this small obelisk on the Ellipse, as it sits there just opposite the White House on the north end. It was supposed to be something much like the American Meridian: designed to be a measuring point for all of the highways in the United States. Instead? It’s just the measuring point for the highways in the District of Columbia (yeah, I know, what highways?). But why a milestone at all? The system of highways was dependent upon common reference measures in order to handle guidebooks and maps, as well as establishing distances between locations. Thus, if they were measured from a common location, which could be surveyed and plotted appropriately, better travel guides and directions could be created.

The milestone dates back to the post World War I era, when expansion of the highway system was just beginning. In 1919, an advocate for the early highway system, Dr. S. M. Johnson, proposed a single national marker, based on the Roman system, from which all roads would be measured. He wrote to the Army Motor Transportation Corps, “The system of highways radiating from Washington to all the boundaries of the national domain and all parts of the Western hemisphere will do vastly more for national unity and for human unity than even the roads of the Roman Empire.” His letter was successful, and after an act of Congress, a temporary marker was erected before a large convoy of vehicles would take the Lincoln Highway from DC west to San Francisco on July 7th, 1919.

President Harding would dedicate the permanent marker that now rests on the Ellipse in June of 1923. It would be the first of many to follow, including milestones in San Diego (for the Lee Highway), Nashville, and other major cities on the national highway system that existed prior to the Eisenhower Interstate System that we know today. US 1’s milestone is in Key West, Florida. Our milemarker is a short obelisk with a bronze 16 point compass rose, atop it, inscribed with some of the journeys that began from it in 1919 and 1920.

So, our milestone stands proud, just south of the White House, on the site of the Jefferson Pier, on one of the great meridians of Washington. Though its purpose is past, it reminds us that context, and where you measure your roads from, is ever-shifting beneath us. You can read more about the first national truck convoys, or about those involved with the milestone, courtesy of the Department of Transportation.

“DC” Group Wants Marriage Referendum

A group calling itself “Stand 4 Marriage D.C.” (the substitution of the number in exchange for a three letter word is really what makes them jerks. That is, unless they want polygamy? I’m so confused.) has requested the paperwork necessary to start a referendum in the District on the subject of marriage. They’ll need 21,000 signatures of registered DC Voters in order to get the question on the ballot, which could come as soon as this Fall.

Who’s behind this? Marylanders. Bishop Harry Jackson of Beltsville is powering this new group, and is acting as its spokesman. What’s not clear, though, is how he thinks he’ll be able to get around the DC provision that referendums can’t violate the Human Rights Act, which this would likely fall under. The 180 day clock for those signatures started yesterday, after which the referendum petition must be reviewed by the Board of Elections before it could go on a ballot.

13 Aquatic Specimens Die at Zoo

11 of the National Zoo’s stingrays and a few arowanas died this morning, according to the Zoo staff. The water in the Amazonia exhibit had reached a dangerous low oxygen level, and asphyxia is the likely, if not the confirmed, cause of death. The Zoo is adding oxygen meter readings to their schedule as well as water-quality tests.

The 55,000 gallon aquarium dates to the early 1990s, where it’s been home to a healthy and reproducing stingray population, which was sadly decimated by the decrease in oxygenation. Here’s hoping they’ll rebound well.
