This week’s ticket giveaway is for a pair of tickets to see Scala & The Kolancy Brothers perform at the 9:30 Club on Monday, April 25th.
If you don’t know what the heck Scala & The Kolancy Brothers is yet, don’t feel bad, you are not alone. Odds are you might know their work without even knowing who they are. Their weird and heart-breaking cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” was used heavily in the ad campaign for the film “The Social Network” last year. That’s where I was first exposed to this massive all girl choir from Belgium and the pair of brothers who work with them. Digging into Scala a little deeper reveals a group that specializes in soul searching choral arrangements of famous pop tunes; a niche market that they have been dominating for years. Thanks in no small part to the exposure that “The Social Network” provided, Scala & The Kolancy Brothers are able to bring their live show to America. I have a feeling this is going to be an unusual and special night at the 9:30 Club.

Now here is a ticket giveaway for a band that I personally endorse 100%. Mogwai are one of the very best live bands on the planet. They are elite. They are the special forces of the post-rock genre; of the many inspiring bands that post-rock has produced none are as consistently amazing live as them. Their concerts rattle souls. I once saw them play so furiously an amplifier burst into flames (seriously). Another time I saw them perform, they played so hard that their drummer had to be hospitalized immediately after the show. Enter to win two tickets to see Mogwai unleash their quiet beauty and thunderous power at the 9:30 Club on Tuesday, April 19th.

The next time you get off the Metro at Navy Yard heading toward Nats Park, you’ll be greeted by the exterior of a new outdoor beer garden called Das Bullpen (h/t to Nationals Buzz blogger Kristen Hudak).
Das Bullpen opened Tuesday and is described as the “laid-back alternative” to its partner beer garden, The Bullpen, which further down (by a few yards or so) on Half Street.
Bratwurst, Polish sausage, knockwurst, hot dogs and an extensive European draught beer selection will be available to patrons.
Das Bullpen will open two hours before the day’s first pitch and stay open until midnight.

Nestled in Northeast, you’ll find a time capsule from the past, where the remnants of Washington’s natural history of wetlands and rivers flourish. Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens is the hidden gem of the DC area National Park System and a excellent spot for DCers to escape to for a serene and educational respite.
In the late 1800s, Walter Spondhaw bought a piece of land along the marshland flats of the Anacostia River. Shaw, a Maine native, planted a few wild water lilies in a pond of this strip of land. The lilies took on like gangbusters and Shaw planted other lilies and varieties of flowers. When Shaw died in 1921, his daughter, Helen Shaw Fowler, expanded the gardens and made the location where U.S. presidents, their families, and neighbors would take day trips to. Continue reading

This week we are giving away a pair of tickets to see Kylie Minogue live at the Patriot Center at George Mason University on Saturday, April 30th. Whether you are a fan of Ms. Minogue’s music or not, there is no denying that she is one of the premier spectacle performers on the planet right now. I have heard absolutely insane things about the stage set, costumes, and sheer theatrical hugeness of her current tour, “Aphrodite Live 2011”. We’re talking walls of water (you can purchase “splash zone” seats), Kylie emerging from a giant clam (ala Botticelli), and later riding a freakin’ Pegasus (yes, a freakin’ Pegasus)!

Check this out DC. The second annual Sweetlife Festival is happening at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Sunday, May 1st. It boasts a line-up that is “sweet life” personified in the form of the following bands:
The Strokes • Girl Talk • Lupe Fiasco • Crystal Castles • Cold War Kids • Ra Ra Riot • Walk the Moon • U.S. Royalty • Modern Man
This festival and its mega-watt line-up is a far-cry from seeing Hot Chip in a tent in Dupont Circle like we did at last year’s. A festival of this size with a line-up this impressive is a major booking coup for Sweetgreen and to celebrate their victory they have given We Love DC a pair of lawn tickets to give away for this week’s ticket raffle!
Tickets for Sweetlife Fest are $55 and go on sale on Friday, March 18th at Noon through Ticketfly. But you have a chance here to win a pair of tix from us before they go on sale! Winning these will make you just about the coolest music fan in the greater DC area for at least a whole day!

‘Cats Eating Pasta’

Spaghetti Dinner? Yum! Bingo? Well, Bingo! Raising money for in need kittens and puppies? Snorgle-rific! Combining them all? Epic interspecies snorgling and noming, which is exactly what the Washington Animal Rescue League has planned for its annual Pasta for Pets event to be held Saturday, March 19 from 6:00 – 8:30pm at Eastern Market’s North Hall.
The night features delicious pasta from local restaurants, an assortment of homemade desserts and, most importantly, fundraising for WARL’s Project Rescue, which provides support for local families and individuals who are finding it difficult to provide for their pets in this challenging economic climate. ‘Dave and his alter ego 3’
courtesy of ‘tbridge’
For about 15 minutes this President’s Day Weekend, I managed to fulfill one of my Kindergarten aspirations – I was one of the Presidents of the United States.
You know, kind of.
Background: it’s become a bit of a President’s Day tradition that the Nationals host their annual mascot auditions at Nationals Park. As Rachel’s awesome recap last year was quick to note, sticking to the holiday weekend that recognizes the same men these mascots represent is so important that the try outs are held shine or snow.
I joined in with a few other members of the media – Lenny Bernstein of the Washington Post and Danny Rouhier from WJFK 106.7 The Fan – and we got a chance to go through the whole process. I will tell you: my respect for the people who don the Presidential Gear for about 35 games every season has shot through the roof after spending a lap inside the costume.
Since so many people tried to win tickets yesterday and since we could only pick one winner, we decided that we should give all of those who didn’t win yesterday, a chance to win tickets to a different free show happening this holiday weekend!
Today, we are giving away a pair of tickets to see Fences perform at the Red Palace on Sunday, February 20th.
Fences has been getting love in the press with his self-titled debut that SPIN magazine recently named one of their 10 Best Albums You Might Have Missed in 2010, calling the album “sorrowful, self-deprecating, and charming pop-folk songs with catchy keyboard melodies and lyrics about squandered love.” NPR digs Fences too; they featured his song “My Girl The Horse” as one of their songs of the day last Fall. I am just discovering Fences myself, but I am getting a real “best kept secret” vibe from the guy. Judging from the tunes on his Myspace page, he probably won’t a be a secret much longer.
For your chance to win simply leave a comment on this post using a valid email address between 9am and 4pm today. One entry per email address, please. If today doesn’t turn out to be your lucky day, but you still want to check out Fences this weekend, tickets are just $10 and can be bought here.

Since the winner’s choice proved so popular last week, we’ve decided to do another one; this time we’re raising the stakes by giving away tickets to a sold out show!
Up for grabs this week, we have one pair of tickets to see Drive-By Truckers perform this weekend at one of their sold out show at 9:30 Club ! Just tell us which night you’d like to go when you leave your comment below. If DBT’s show at the club last summer is any indication, the winner is in for a really good time!

What’s an engineer? He’s that guy who wears overalls, that cute stripped hat and shovels coals into the trains engine, right? As Auntie Shrew would say “Wrrrrrrrong!” Engineers are much, much, much more than that. And to find out how engineers and engineering impacts our everyday lives, visit the National Building Museum this Saturday from 10am-4:30pm and celebrate National Engineers Week.
Watch PBS’ Design Squad Nation catapult beach balls across the Great Hall, discover the principles of aerodynamics, operate Lego Robots on the FIRST Lego League playing field. The event features other hands-on activities like building a “flinker,” an object that neither floats or sinks, design your own parachute drop, test/build handmade watercrafts, and expore a tsunami wave tank.
