Last Screen on the Green of the Summer

Well, Screen on the Green is set to retire for another season.  Let’s hope that it comes back again next year.  Tonight’s showing will be the James Dean classic “Rebel Without a Cause.” If you haven’t been out to SCOTG yet, definitely brave the balmy evening and join the cool kids on the mall.  In my opinion, “On the Waterfront” was this year’s best cinematic offering from our friends at HBO and WB, but “Rebel Without a Cause” is a close second. Get there.

Screen on the Green: On the Waterfront

For the third movie in its ressurection run, Screen on the Green will feature On the Waterfront this evening. For those of you not in the loop, On the Waterfront is arguably one of the greatest movies of all time. It won 8 Academy Awards and features Marlon Brando in his prime (ladies). The weather is supposed to be beautiful tonight and I highly recommend that you get to the mall to enjoy this film with a thousand of your closest friends. The feature should start around 8:30.

A Movie Location Tour Of DC

DC’s become a hot spot for filming these days! Real World, Real Housewives of Orange County, Blonde Charity Mafia, as well as Reese Witherspoon, Night at the Museum and so many more. It’s a wonder that we didn’t get a DC movie site bus tour any earlier. But it’s here now, better late than never.

Screen Tours has arrived to take you and other interested parties around DC to all our hot film spots. Shop in the mall where No Way Out and True Lies were filmed; stand on the steps where Father Damian fell to his death in The Exorcist; visit the bar used in St. Elmo’s Fire; go to the park used in The Sentinel and see locations from Wedding Crashers, Thank You For Smoking, Election, X Files, Independence Day, Forrest Gump, and many others. From classic films of the seventies such as The Godfather II, All the Presidents Men, and Being There to the recent Transformers, Mission Impossible III, West Wing, 24, and The Visiting, the tour of Washington DC TV and movie sites takes tour guests on a journey of the timeline of filming in DC.

DC’s Own On Top Chef Masters Tonight!

Just a quick reminder to all you foodies and Bravo Top Chef fans out there – Chef Art Smith of Art and Soul will be on Top Chef Masters tonight! Art and Soul, located in the Liaison Capitol Hill, right near Union Station is hosting a Top Chef Master’s Viewing Party tonight. The party will be held in ArtBar from 8 p.m. – 11 p.m., and will feature complimentary hors d’oeuvres that showcase classic Art Smith dishes.

New Happenings at H Street Country Club

A night out at H Street Country Club can get pretty pricey, if you ask me. Between $7.50 minigolf, and throwing some serious quarters down at skeeball, and sipping on $7 frozen margs all night, I can wind up walking out of there a whole lot poorer than I entered.

But, ever recession-proof, H Street Country Club recently announced all kinds of different happy hour specials, a few for each night of the week. Here are my picks: Wednesdays are FREE Chips & Salsa from 5 to 7 p.m. at the bars, and Thursdays are Preppy & Plaid days with $4 Golf if you’re wearing plaid. End your week on Sunday with Happy Gilmore Hour featuring $5 Classic Margaritas & Sangria from 5 to 7 p.m.

And while we’re talking about H St. CC, the golf course has seen some recent wear and tear (as predicted by myself and Acacia when we went to visit) and Joe Englert recently talked to the City Paper’s Tim Carman about the work they’re doing on the course to improve its durability. It’s worth a read.

Slam Dunk Contest

DC basketball is like a wave rising and falling.  Teams like the  ’07 Hoyas raise our hopes, while the Wizards make a yearly attempt at breaking our spirits. On Saturday, Sprite and the NBA will give locals a chance to show what DC is really about.  The Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown, an amateur dunk competition, will be held on that day at 4pm at an outdoor court between 9th and 10th streets on Pennsylvania Ave NW.  Admission is $10 and attendees will be able to vote on their favorite dunks via text messaging. Hey! The coolest people in DC all have plans on Wednesday night, July 1st. They’ll all be hanging out at the Science Club, celebrating the first birthday of this here blog. And you’ll be there, right? Of course you will, cause you’re a mighty cool kid!

In addition to some cheap libations, you’ll get to pose in our hawt photo booth, donate to Bread in the City, and scarf the unofficial food of We Love DC, the veggie burger. You’ll also get to meet our super cool authors (most of whom will be rocking a color variation of this tee shirt so you can find us in the crowd) and chat with us about anything you want. More than anything, though, you’ll get to celebrate your love of our fine District.

So, as I informed you earlier, Bliss Spa is now in DC! “Welcome to the land of luxe lotions, line-levelers and lip gloss.” But for now, Bliss is having a brownie-off to see which DC bakery will supply the brownies for Bliss’ infamous brownie bar at the DC location.

The competitors? Baked & Wired vs. Bread & Chocolate vs. Heller’s Bakery.

DC Bocce Summer Registration Opens Soon

Some of us just aren’t hardcore enough for kickball. Seriously, I’ve heard some nightmare stories about overly-serious and competitive teams kicking half-inflated balls in the heat of a DC afternoon, and all that sounds miserable to me. I’m just not that kind of girl. So what is a girl like me to do for her summer recreation?

I’m thinking I want a sport without all that running, and possibly a sport that I can play beer-in-hand. Well, lazy sport lovers unite, DC Bocce League is my new best friend. Registration for the summer league opens June 22nd, and they’ve just introduced a new night and new playing locations.

With team names like Don’t Stop Boccelievin, Big Bocce Bitchslap, Organized De-Bocce-ry and Step Off Biocce, there are plenty of puns to go around. Get yours.

I’m a lucky girl to have a Dad like mine. He’s generally hilarious, he is very easy to talk to, and likes to do fun things. Can a girl ask for anything more? And lucky for me, he’ll be in town on Father’s Day, this year! So I started researching all kinds of good things to do in the city with my Dad and figured I’d share, just in case you all were looking for fun things to do with your Dad for Father’s Day (or whenever he in town next).

We’ve got sporting events, places for the history buff, outdoor activities, manly museums and more. So in no particular order, here are some fun suggestions of things around DC to do with the man who loved you first.

Tastes Like Chicken

Two parts delicious, one part hilarious, and one part disturbing, the Delmarva Chicken Festival is coming to Queen Anne’s County, MD for the 60th year in a row. Highlights include a “trademark giant fry pan,” “chicken capers” (games for kids), and of course, lots of chicken cooked any way you like it. Unfortunately, the pageant (for the titles of Little Miss and Miss Poultry Princess, natch) is no longer, but they do promise some live entertainment– chicken circus, perhaps?

The festival is next weekend, June 19 and 20, at Queen Anne’s County 4-H Park near Centreville.

A Chef Spit-Roasted Garden Dinner

Penn Quarter’s trendy happy hour spot Poste is introducing a new farm-to-table concept by chef Rob Weland. ‘Poste Roasts’, an affordable family table dining concept served out in the garden, features a spit-roasted locally-sourced animal (guest’s choice) on the garden’s new grill. Weland serves it with a complementary side that features ingredients from local farms and the restaurant’s organic garden.

The dinner, served for 6 to 12 people,  is available every night except Thursdays. The meal is eaten outdoors, at the chef’s table in the restaurant garden. Unlike other larger dinners like this in the area (Planet Wine or The Majestic) – Poste Roasts will only set you back $27 per person (excluding dessert and wine). If you’re up for it, you can spring for more specific pairings with VA wines for each roast as well.

We Love Food: Food & Wine Festival at National Harbor

Food and Wine Festival

Summertime is festival time, and I’m not complaining. After attending Savor a week ago, I had no idea what to expect going into The Food and Wine Festival at National Harbor. Would it be fancy? Would it be lame? Would they have enough food and wine to keep me happy? Actually, does anyone ever have enough food and wine to keep me happy? Is there enough food and wine in the world to keep me happy for life? Ah! So many existential questions, but I digress. Basically, Jasmine and I headed over to National Harbor with zero expectations, and wound up extremely happy, totally entertained, bellies satisfied, heads full of wine.

We took the water taxi over from Alexandria, quite nice. Pretty views of Alexandria and National Harbor, and I generally just love boats. Period. If you’re a regular reader, you already know that if there is an event or location near, on, or around water, I’ll like it. It’s a guarantee. So National Harbor already had that going for it, as the festival exhibitors lined the boat docks, so we were on water the entire time. Aaaaand They’re Back

It seems that the great-fireworks controversy at Nationals Park has drawn to an end a mere 24 hours after it started.  You may recall that DC Fire Chief Dennis Rubin suspended the displays after debris fell on him during a game on Sunday.  After what must have been some intense negotiations, Nats officials caved and agreed to change the firing angle slightly to better protect the crowd. Hooray.

No More Fireworks (for now)

WAPO reports that the fireworks displays at Nats Park were suspended by DC Fire Chief Dennis Rubin after ash fell on him while he attended a game.  While he was not injured, and there have been no fire concerns up to this point, the Chief wishes to conduct a safety review before the displays are reinstated. If this seems a little asinine, let’s be honest: at this point, the Nationals don’t really deserve fireworks, anyways.

Leather, pleather, and drag queens, oh my! I think it must be time for Capital Pride. The weekend’s festivities kick off tonight at Cobalt (oh, Cobalt…I feel the exact same way about you Meg S. does…) with the Mr. and Ms. Capital Pride Leather contest. That sounds almost as good as the High Heel Race, really…

Tomorrow, Town, Nellie’s and Phase 1 will be hopping with happy hours and events, and there are plenty of educational opportunities. Sunday rounds out the weekend with a 5k and a night with the Mystics.  The rest of the week is smattered with some auctions, an interfaith service, and a pride shabbat. Check the full schedule for all the details. Oh, and did I forget to mention Ru Paul will be around? How could I?

Washingtonian Cheap Eats ON A MAP! Whee!

A few weeks ago, I enthusiastically waxed poetic about the merits of the DC Beer Map. So when reader and tweeter emvii sent me the Washingtonian Cheap Eats 2009 on a Google map, it was right up my alley.

So here is the deal about this glorious map: It is a  map of the 100 Best Cheap Eats in DC, identified by Washingtonian Magazine, tasted and rated by the mysterious unidentified map builders the wonderful peeps over at the DC baking blog Pete Bakes, and then sorted and color coded into green (good), yellow (fine) and red (don’t).

YAY! I LOVE IT! Whoever did this, Pete Bakes,  let me tell you, you made my day yesterday. I talked about this to at least 10 people. I love it when food and technology combine in map form. Brilliant. Good on you!

Getaways: Rehoboth Beach

From boardwalks, to seafood, to sandy stretches to outlet shopping, Rehoboth Beach in Delaware has everything you could ask for in a beach. Three of my friends and I recently struck out for a relaxing escape-our-stressful-jobs girls weekend.

We’re twentysomethings on budgets, so we stayed at the Atlantis Inn. Clean, no frills, on the main strip, only a block and a half from the beach, the Atlantis is equipped with comfy rooftop poolside chairs, but take warning: double beds. So if you’re just a group of friends, you’ll be forced to do some mandatory cuddling. Whatever, at least we like each other.

The main drag of Rehoboth is adorable, lined with all kinds of great shops, good food and plenty of ice cream options. We were totally entertained. Continue reading →
