Pimp Your Peeps: 2010 Peeps Contest

Unless you paid special attention to this weekend’s Washington Post magazine, you probably missed the opening of the 2010 Peeps Diorama Contest. This will be the contest’s 4th year, and I can’t wait to see all of this year’s entries.

If you’re interested in entering, the first step is to brainstorm ideas and come up with a historic, current, or future occurrence and/or a pop culture related concept. You know an idea that is comprehensible by more than just you and your tight knit group of friends.

Then construct your diorama, keeping to the shoebox sized regulations, snap two high-resolution JPEG photos and send them to peeps@washpost.com by Monday, March 1, at 11:59 p.m. Continue reading →

Behind Cupid’s Undie Run

Not even the snowpocalypse will stop Brendan Hanrahan from running around the Capitol half-naked this Saturday. The sole director of the first annual Cupid’s Undie Run is devoted to his cause and the message he’s helping to spread here in the DC area.

Hanrahan moved to town a few years back and has been yearning for a way to apply what he left behind at home to his daily life. The end result being Cupid’s Undie Run.

This excuse for DC to take its pants off is more than a Sunday morning stroll to annoy Metro riders or a freak shortage of condoms during the biggest snow fall in DC history — for Hanrahan, it hits home. Cupid’s Undie Run benefits the Children’s Tumor Foundation, which is Hanrahan’s purpose for founding the Undie Run.

His best friend’s brother is his motivation to raise money for the cause. To him, this justifies all the effort put in to creating a new and exciting way to raise money for a cause in the nation’s capital. Continue reading →

Yeah, I feel you. There’s only so many days you can surf the interwebz, watch movies, catch up on your DVR recordings, read, twiddle your thumbs, pace around your apartment, etc.

Baltimore Enlists Special Help For Snopocalyspe

No word yet on if the ground storm troopers have been deployed or if DC will be implementing a similar task force.

I feel like DC is on the cusp of mass pranking greatness. Sure, we’re a few steps behind our NYC brethren, but it doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun with flash mobs and pantsless subway rides. If you’ve yet to get in on any action of the like, you may have a chance on Feb 24th. Steve Kemble, some fitness guru that I’ve never heard of, will be leading a dancing flash-mob in an as of yet undisclosed location in DC. The dance moves will be posted on Youtube so that you can practice up ahead of time. Register here.

The spring season of National Geographic Live – a series of dynamic lectures, concerts, films and more – kicks off next week.

This year, the National Geographic Society has graciously offered some event tickets to our readers. If you’re interested in winning a pair of tickets to any of the events below, simply remark in comments which two events – in preferred order – you’d like to attend. We’ll do a random drawing on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 2nd) after 1pm and we’ll get the winners set up with their first (or second, if your first choice is full) selection. Keep in mind that tickets are for single events only, not multi-part series or showings, unless otherwise indicated. (The kung-fu film festival is an exception; you can win tickets for all three movies!)

Got the urge to bust a move this weekend? Project Create is throwing the “Rock With You” Dance Party at Darlington House Saturday featuring a night full of legendary tunes by Michael Jackson.

Proceeds go toward at-risk children in the DC area.

So lace up those dancin’ shoes, grab yourselves a sequined glove, maybe some white patent leather shoes, and get ready to rock it like the smooth criminal you know you are.

Party starts at 7 p.m. and features drink deals all night after the $5 cover.

Washington Auto Show Opens At Convention Center

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center opened its doors to the annual Washington Auto Show today.

This year’s show features 700 new vehicles from over 42 domestic and import automakers including the newest sports cars, green cars and high-tech rides. NBC Washington’s got a nice slide show preview up of the spread, just in case you want to check out the goods before dropping a few dollars for the real thing.

The show runs every day through Sunday and is open during the following hours:

Wed. January 27, 2010 – 10:00 am – 9:00 pm

Thur. January 28, 2010 – 10:00 am – 9:00 pm

Fri. January 29, 2010 – 10:00 am – 10:00 pm

Cupid’s Undie Run – Another Excuse for DC To Go Pantless

Hey DC, want another excuse to take your pants off? Did the No Pants Party on the Metro leave you wanting more? Your prayers have been answered in form of a pantless run around the Capitol scheduled for Feb. 13.

Registration for Cupid’s Undie Run (yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like) is now open and costs $30 to enter. The registration fee includes a commemorative event t-shirt, all day drink specials, post-race food, and the chance to run around DC in nothing but your skivvies.

The party starts at noon at Pourhouse (located at 319 Pennsylvania Ave, SE) and ends with a 1.75 mile jog around the Capitol. Who knows — you just might meet your future ball ‘n chain. It’d sure as hell make a good story for the grandkids!

Caps 4, Coyotes 2: the Streak Continues

Perhaps this is a silly prejudice, but I feel like hockey teams from warm places have something to prove. I know, I know, hockey teams don’t recruit from their localities and, like every other professional athlete, hockey players go to where the money is, but it doesn’t change the fact that I expect less from a hockey team from Arizona. If the Phoenix Coyotes did have anything to prove, they’re certainly doing it this year. With an impressive record, they came to DC, last night, as a very real threat to the Capitals five game winning streak.

The Capitals, with their aforementioned win streak and Ovechkin’s impressive scoring record, were definitely the team to beat and the Coyotes were determined to cut them down to size. The game opened with Phoenix playing aggressively and keeping the puck near the Capitals goal for most of the 1st period. The Caps looked a bit tentative, early on, but managed to take advantage of their first power play, with Brooks Laich to scoring in the opening minutes. The Coyotes answered in the 13th minute of the period, tying game. Continue reading →

Damn, Crowded Metro Station! You Scary!

Was anyone else at the Chinatown Metro station yesterday evening at around 6:15? I was, and I was pressed into the mass of humanity unsuccessfully attempting to move around the station. It all started because a red line train, which I was on, had to offload at Judiciary Square, thereby causing a delay that resulted in platforms down the line filling up. I got to Chinatown, got off the train and proceeded to work my way through a human traffic jam for 20 minutes. New trains would come in, but the platform was so crowded that passengers could barely get off and the doors would close before anyone waiting could board. This exacerbated the crowding problem and the platform just got more and more full. I’m pretty sure that no one died or anything, but I was witness to a few fights. The best part: this was just a Monday evening. Nothing special was happening. I really do love mass transit.

Where to Watch the Game

Unless you live in a cave, or genuinely care about nothing sports related, you’re probably aware that the BCS Championship Game is this evening. And, if you have even an inkling of football fanaticism, you’re probably planning on watching it. Year to year, the BCS Title is a clash of the titans, and one of the highlights of the football season. This year pits the Texas Long Horns against the Alabama Crimson Tide. I’ll leave analysis and predictions to others and focus on the most practical of matters: where to watch the game. I’m going to assume that you’re already aware of the “my house” and the “my friend’s house” options, so here are a few suggestions in case you want to leave the living room. If you’re not a real sports bar type, big game nights are excellent for branching out. In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with the places below:

Zorn Gets the Axe

The inevitable has finally happened and the Zorn era is no more. After a 4-12 season and an overall 12-20 record, the Redskins leadership decided that it was time to fire head coach Jim Zorn. This move, of course, has been speculated for months, particularly after Redskin owner Dan Snyder stripped Zorn of his play calling responsibilities earlier in the season. It really comes as no surprise to most football fans. Still, I ask myself: was the Redskins abysmal 2009 performance a symptom of bad coaching, or of something deeper? Many Washingtonians feel that Dan Snyder’s meddling in the day to day affairs of his team is far more to blame than Jim Zorn’s apparent lack of ability. So, Skins fans, what’s your analysis? Was this a good move, bad move, or will it even matter? Supposedly Snyder is courting Mike Shanahan as Zorn’s replacement. Any thoughts on that?
