We Love Weekends: August 19-21

Tom: This weekend is all about the glories of summer. I’ve been putting off and putting off a visit to the Bloomingdale Farmers Market, where I’m sure they’re drowning in sweet corn, peaches, and fresh tomatoes, and that sounds an awful lot like salsa to me. While we’re in the hood, a trip to Rustik sounds mighty good, while we dream of a Rustik of our own, maybe at the 901 Monroe development. With the Phillies in town, I’ll likely not be heading for Nationals Park, but it is Ian Desmond Bobblehead day.

Brittany: I am getting back from a week in Maine just in time for the weekend in DC. As much as I love relaxing around trees, sweaters, and sail boats, I am ready to be back to enjoy the last weeks of summer excitement at home. Friday, one of my very best friends will be playing at Subterranean A, which is a great space and I think the turn-out will be really good. Monday brings more friend-band fun when my lovely friend Ian’s label Cricket Cemetery puts on a showcase at Galaxy Hut. His own band Lions&Tigers&Whales is playing and is super good – and he informed me other day that I am going to love his label-mates The Tender Thrill. In between Friday and Monday: Housewarming parties, birthday parties, trying to pack up my apartment to move, and lots of good coffee because they still do not have that in Maine.

Fedward: This weekend the pick-of-the-fringe-best-musical-award-winning show Cabaret XXX (full disclosure: it features the Social Chair) gets a remount at the Warehouse Theater. Earlier Saturday evening some friends of mine have reservations at the Columbia Room, and while it’s all booked up I might try to see if they’ll squeeze me in on a cancellation. Or I might just sit at the Passenger bar. Other than that, on Friday after work I’ll swing by the Petworth Market for some fresh produce and eggs and then see POP! at Studio Theatre. Sunday looks wide open as of right now, and I like that. Maybe I’ll just go to the pool. And if I don’t end up at the Passenger bar on Saturday night, there’s always my old friend hangover brunch!

Marissa: Friday night I’m headed to Jazz in the Sculpture Garden before the season is over. Then maybe, just maybe, giving restaurant week a whirl or heading to Alexandria for the beginning of their restaurant week. Saturday I’ll check out the end of DC Beer Week and Sunday it’s another round of canning tomatoes with Cathy Barrow.

Rebecca: After last weekend’s bar tab, I’m implementing austerity measures, which means finding things to do in DC that cost next to nothing. Friday I’m headed to Rockville to look at kitchen and bathroom tiles and cabinetry. Exciting! I’ve been getting a lot inspiration from the DC section of Apartment Therapy and their DC House Tours features. Saturday morning, I’ll be volunteering with Potomac Appalachian Trail Club with trail reconstruction along the Whitehaven Trail in Glover Park. If you’d like to help, contact wdctrails@yahoo. com. After that, I’m checking out the first of three National Portrait Gallery exhibitions marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. This first exhibit recounts the death of Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth, a friend of President Abraham Lincoln and the first Union officer to be killed in the four-year-long struggle. Sunday, my plans to nap/read on the National Cathedral lawn were rained out, so I’ll revive that plan and hopefully the weather will abide.

Jenn: For many Washingtonians, summer weekends means a trip to the beach. I’ll be joining the shore swarm by heading out to Rehoboth for the first time, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! If I were staying in the city, I’d definitely hit Fiola to catch some of Jeff Faile’s ridiculously good cocktails and chef Fabio Trabocchi’s divinely decadent steak tartare. Fiola is taking a summer break starting this Sunday, reopening the Tuesday after Labor Day, so if you’ve been meaning to get over there, now is the time! DC Beer Week wraps up Sunday as well, so I would follow Brittany’s footsteps, enjoying a pint in the late summer golden glow…

Don: My weekend is shaping up to be an extravaganza of home improvement… and it’s not even my home! Oh well, I said I wanted to learn how to do tongue-in-groove flooring. Yeah, that’s how I roll. But if my back isn’t screaming too much in pain I may go out to the under-attended wasteland that is Nationals Stadium and see a game or two out of this penultimate homestead. Otherwise I’m viewing my weekend brouhaha as actually being mid-next week when I’ll get to see Reggie Watts at Woolly Mammoth at one of his 4 shows.

[245p] and a late addition from Gene!

Moses:  With the Reds from Cincinnati in town today, and feeling in a red mood, I’m hitting “The Smoke Fairies” at Red Palace tonight. Saturday I’m celebrating my wife’s favorite clothes color at the Textile Museum’s ode to all things green “Green: the color and the cause” exhibit.  Sunday, I’ll be all white (“uh-huh!”) and feeling too good myself at the Nats game as they put a clubbing to those Phillies and their ph-ing phans phrom up north.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.

Hmm, guess I just did.

My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
