Tom mentioned the kerfuffle and a comment about Jane Fernandez’s characterization that that the issue revolves around her not being “deaf enough,” a description that the FSSA strongly denounces.
The reality is that we can’t be sure what the prime mover is for all the protesters just because they disavow this explanation. In all probability there’s almost as many motivations as their are actors in this play. If you’re interested in peering into the battle as it’s being waged around the net and drawing your own conclusions, however, there’s a number of places you can check out.
The Gallaudet Faculty Staff Student Alumni website is sparse, but not a bad place to start.
Local deaf resource DeafDC has a blog that has had many posts on the issue. Their contributors range from supporters of the protest to ambivalent to completely disinterested. One of their writers, Adam Stone, fairly elequently explains why he thinks that this protest is doomed to failure and his belief that this protest may be about Fernandes but is the result of much more.
Ridor, otherwise known as Ricky Taylor, is a fairly prolific blogger on the issue and not a subtle voice. He’s been very much in the protester camp and his posts are filled with links to other people’s writings and news.
Lastly I include this link to Protest Comics because I should not be the only person to suffer. All I can say is that if it’s not funny or clever maybe its a protest illustration. Seriously.

Well I used to say something in my profile about not quite being a “tinker, tailor, soldier, or spy” but Tom stole that for our about us page, so I guess I’ll have to find another way to express that I am a man of many interests.
Hmm, guess I just did.
My tastes run the gamut from sophomoric to Shakespeare and in my “professional” life I’ve sold things, served beer, written software, and carried heavy objects… sometimes at the same place. It’s that range of loves and activities that makes it so easy for me to love DC – we’ve got it all.
