As if there aren’t enough reasons to make fun of Virginia, here’s a big one: one in four Virginians believe that President Obama isn’t a native-born American citizen. Another one in four “isn’t sure” he’s a native-born American citizen. I’m going to phrase this slightly differently: Half of Virginia isn’t sure Barack Obama can be President. That’s of a state that 53% of voters voted for Obama, and while voting-turnout doesn’t always mirror poll turnout… crikey, there must be some confused people out there, that voted for him, but don’t think he’s eligible. Words defy.
Pictured above is St. E’s, where most of these people belong, were it still in operation.
I won’t disagree with you that there’s a reason in this article to make fun of Virginians, but I don’t think it’s because part of them voted for him, but don’t think he’s eligible. It’s because they’re stupid enough to believe, or even consider the possibility that Obama isn’t a native-born American citizen. I mean, really people.
So by that logic, 3 in 4 Virginians DO believe that Obama IS an “American”, or 3 in 4 Virginians (like me) don’t give a shit where the president was born?
Slooooow news month, August, ain’t it? We need more shark attacks in Florida, or something. :)
It means half of Virginians at least have doubts that Obama is a natural-born citizen. Think about that. It’s astounding.
There are over 7.7 million residents in Virginia.
The poll sample was from 579 people.
I hardly call that a fair and accurate sampling of Virginia residents.
Check out this Survey Sample Size Calculator.
A 95% confidence survey with a confidence interval of 4% with a population of 7.7M would be a sample size of 600.
So, it’s statistically likely…
Not to mention that the results seem consistent with other polls showing similar results across the South. Scary stuff.
One reason to “make fun of Virginia” is that the state in being punked by the new 60 to 70 percent Democrat majority in Northern Virginia (particularly Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria), which put Obama over the top in 2008.
I can’t think of any other rational reasons to “make fun” of Virginia, but then again I don’t live in DC anymore.
By the way, here’s an interesting study about “The Four Virginias” and the unfortunate new dominance of Northern Virginia over the other 5/7ths of the state.

Virginians are smart. They know when sometime is fishy.
Obama’s hidden records and natural born citizenship are legitimate issues.
It’s no surprise that Hillary Clinton just went to Kenya to reinforce the cover-up.
I still want answers. Obummer, put up or get out!!!! All he has to do is make the following official public statement,
“I Barack Obama authorize the State of Hawaii to release and make public all of my records on file.”
That’s it. Issue over. But he won’t because he’s a fraud!! Obama knows that millions of citizens want to see it yet he continues to hide it. What/why is he hiding? and most disturbingly, why don’t BHO’s supporters want to know the whole truth, especially since there’s a reward of $100,000 for proof that Obama is a “natural born” citizen of the United States.
OBAMA, STOP HIDING. SHOW US THE LONG FORM BIRTH CERTIFICATE AND YOUR OTHER RECORDS!!!!!
While I agree that the stat is disturbing, the tone regarding VA is equally bothersome. Northern VA is a significant part of Metro area’s economy, so a little mutual respect for one’s neighbors would be appreciated.
The blog is about loving DC, I always assumed that included the whole Metro Area, of which VA and MD are vital parts. For reference, I grew up in VA and have lived in the District for a decade – not that it matters.
@ #1 Virginian’s are pretty smart:

#8 is clearly an exception to the rule.
Obama has lived for 48 years without leaving any footprints — none!
There is no Obama documentation — no records — no paper trail —
none — this is no accident. It is being done on purpose with Media
help – but to serve whom & why??

…I can honestly say, with no humor or sensationalism intended, that this is without a doubt the dumbest thing I have ever heard in my life. No comparison. If you honestly think that this is the truth, that he’s not from Hawaii, you need medication. Or less of it. Something, anyway.
Actually, you know what? Let me ask this.
Why does he need to release those records?
Think about it. If I asked one of you to release all that info to the general public, would you? I’d bet not (though I’m sure you’ll proudly proclaim otherwise here, at the end of the day you’d try to squirm out of it).
But, hey, you’re not a public official. Fair point. Have we demanded private records be made public for past presidents? Bush I or II? Clinton? Reagan? Any of them? Of course not.
He’s in office as the result of a national election. Your boy lost. Get over it.
Wow. This post was written by a true Yankee: hypocritical and asinine at the same time!
I would like to know what other (legitimate) reasons there are to make fun us Virginians? I mean, for god’s sake, we have some of the best public schools and universities in this country, 33.6% of us have Bachelor’s degrees (tied for 7th in the nation) as compared to Tom Bridge’s home state (which is where by the way? I’m guessing PA from a twitter post about Pittsburgh… yea, PA is ranked 26th in the nation. HAH! That’s funny.) So we Virginians don’t, by any means, fall into the “stupid” category and it shouldn’t be necessary for WeLoveDC to put a picture of a Mental institution in connection to this “poll” of Virginians.
How sanctimonious of you Tom!
@Old Glory:
Actually, I’m a California native (tied for 14th!), and have been a Virginia resident for 9 years. Every state has something about which some humor can be made. Californians, as I’m sure you know, are just fruits and nuts after all, right?
So, perhaps you can explain, somehow, why this poll (whose sample size suggests accuracy to 95%) says that half the state has some confusion about where the President was born? I mean, this isn’t rocket surgery here…
As for your Yankee comment, as a Westerner, I am neither yankee nor rebel, and find a distinction with roots in slavery 150 years ago to be pretty laughable.
Aww.. can’t we all just get along?
Like someone mentioned earlier, the sample size was less than 600 people. I typically find polls to be… well.. laughable and take them like a grain of salt. There are just too many factors that can’t be calculated when polling individuals. I *might* be able to give a better assessment of this poll if I knew how they phrased the questions and more about their methodology. But I don’t, so I can’t.
As for you last comment, I’ve driven across the country before and down your home state of California. Somewhere in Northern California someone was flying the Confederate flag. Any thoughts on that? It gave me a laugh to see one of those on the complete opposite side of the country. “Fruits and nuts” maybe?
I would bet my last dollar that 100% of those Virginians who were polled were white Americans who still can’t except an African American as the President. If they excepted George Bush being from mars than they certainly can live with having a foreigner in the White House. Virginians need to remember that they voted for one of the dumbest president’s in the history of the U.S. How smart was that??
