Yay! The DC Taxi Commission dropped the $1 fuel surcharge last night, beginning at 12:01 a.m. Thursday. Seems the DCTC finally woke up and realized a ‘fuel surcharge’ when gas is below $2 would be a good PR move…
…Except they’re discussing raising the base rate to $2. Boo! Nice way to find a different way to stick it to your riders, DCTC. Heck, I doubt the fuel charge would’ve been yanked if WTOP and the blogverse hadn’t started griping. Maybe for Christmas we could ask if Santa Fenty could make the commission more accountable and transparent…
I just don’t take cabs any more. Either the majority of DC-based cab drivers are bent or I’ve just been exceptionally unlucky.
They do their best to go the longest way possible, are never in a hurry to get where you need to be, and often “accidentally” do a $1.50 (or more) surcharge.
I never thought I’d say this but I miss the meter system.
And DC isn’t that big. Walk.

Umm, DC’s had the meter system since June of this year. Though many of them still have questionable charging practices…
